It’s not happening. Hurts donations and they won’t make any additional revenue off of it. It makes no sense as the deal with Aramark is currently constructed.

I don't have any real understanding of how the financials work, but is there no way that increased attendance from an improved experience would offset the donations received directly to allow access to beer? Is there not a way to maintain that donation money by creating a section in the stadium where there is in seat service. The Point of Sale system that is being used in Ballard is actually the leader in facilitating that type of service, and their brand was actually built on it. In fact, their system is frankly pretty terrible in every other aspect, so the fact that ODU/Aramark decided to go with it makes me wonder if in seat service has always been planned since the opening of Ballard Stadium.

If they sold beer through the Aramark stands, ODAF would be capped at a specific dollar amount in revenue. The current calculation says they would hit that cap after the first two home games. And games 3 through 7 would not add any additional revenue to ODAFs coffers.

As for ticket sales offsetting the lost donations, I don’t see it. They’d have to raise the price of the average ticket and until they start winning more often than not, that seems like a non-starter.

The only sections I could see getting alcohol delivered to their seat is the priority seats and the endzone club level seats, since those aren’t serviced by Aramark.

Now, having said all that, I’ve been told that they are considering requesting a contract re-negotiation with the new president coming aboard. Whether that happens or not is to be determined. But even if they get Aramark to the table, what concessions in the deal would ODU have to give in order for Aramark to lose that leverage over alcohol sales?

Thought the same. Though with only a few years left, perhaps ODU can renegotiate the terms if they are willing to extend the contract. Does Aramark have any legit competition in the area that might want to gain ODUs business? Perhaps ODU could separate out concessions at the stadium and the Ted from the rest of campus too.

Sodexo is probably their lead competitor but I’m not sure how prevalent they are in the area or state.

I’d like to see your last idea be the road taken in 2025.

If Ovations (the concession arm of Spectra) does not get the concession contract for The Ted and The Steve when the Aramark contract is up I will be shocked.

Sodexo is at William & Mary so they could be interested in our contract as well.

I believe the Aramark contract is through 2025 and ODU would not see any additional revenue from beer sales after approximately the second home game each year because of how it’s laid out. So they would need to renegotiate the contract before this becomes a possibility, since it will have a negative impact on donations people make to get beer garden access.

As for OConnors, given they are currently a PR nightmare, I doubt ODU partners with them any time soon. Smartmouth would be the wiser option. Elation or Reaver Beach would make sense as well, given their proximity to campus.

What is the issue with O'Connors?

Allegations of sexism, racism and retaliation. OConnors recently announced they’re launching an internal investigation into the issue and will start running workplace training for their employees. But the simplest solution appears to be to get Bill O’Connor out of the building. Here’s an article on the allegations.

Anonymous "employees"? No names, nothing specific, and how do we even know that they were actual employees? I guess it doesn't take much for Pilot to run a smear campaign.

Well, it’s clear you didn’t read the article. The employees went public and are named in the article I linked.

I don't think you are understanding me on the seat service. Yeah, Aramark would get the beer money, but ODU could potentially get the same level of donation from the same number of fans by putting them in a section that allows service instead of herding them into a beer garden where like 12 of the million people in there can actually see the game.

That’s a decent idea. You should send that to ODAF. I can mention it to my guy and see what he says as well. I would imagine that would require an even bigger donation than the beer garden one since it would require beer runners.

I think I paid somewhere around $16-$20 for a large cup of beer (perhaps 20 ounces) at the scope - and was glad to pay it to be able to enjoy it while watching the game. There is big money to be had by in-game sales to the broader audience. ODAF needs to figure it out. It’s not complicated.

I work in finance. How do the metrics work (at a high-level)? An illustrative example would be helpful.

Please read the thread. It is very complicated given the Aramark contract, our current seating capacity and the revenue generation of ODAF.

I work in finance. How do the metrics work (at a high-level)? An illustrative example would be helpful.

Read the thread. The mile high view of the situation has been explained ad nauseam.

= ODU signed a bad deal. Shame on them.

And if ODU or ODAF need an experienced finance professional to help renegotiate the contract w/aramark, I will provide my services pro bono. Whoever negotiated the current contract should be ashamed.

RE: Beer Sales
There also seems to be a developing theme here, the ODAF is definitely lacking in creativity. I've heard "let ODAF know" in terms of the ideas. It took an organic movement of ODU fans (many are on this board) to get the #DollarsForDingers thing going.

When I made a contribution to a wrestling program at another school within the state a few years ago, that simple $50 contribution got me luggage tags, stickers, things that if it weren't a hated rival, I would have displayed. After years of contributing, the only thing I'd ever gotten from ODAF was one of those wallet bottle openers. 17 years. The heavy metal ones that really no one keeps in their wallet anyway.

I sent the folks at ODAF some info about how important the school in Fairfax that shall not be named made the donor feel with a very simple, but marketable gift. It seems like all the great ideas aren't coming from ODAF, rather outsiders who have more of a pulse on the alumni than the actual alumni association. I reached out a few years ago to try to see what was in the works with an alumni association among ODU grads here in Minnesota. Crickets.

The foundation needs a kick in the pants. The best ideas seem to come from this board and only get put into action when there's a groundswell of organic movement already in place. Same with marketing (Ted Heads, for example).

BTW, Sodexo is awful, too. Having spent many, many nights in hospitals over the past eight years and having to dine on Sodexo-based dining halls, etc., the Aramark contract might suck, but Sodexo ain't much better in terms of what it provides with the experience, IMO. That's another discussion from my point though. ODAF needs to get its **** together.

I know the city boundaries are often blurry around here but Farmhouse is in Virginia Beach.

True, less than a mile from Chesapeake.

Not that it helps the conversation (or does it?), but I'm drinking a beer right now.

Now all you need is a football game to go with it.
