Who will get first paycheck at odu???
It is a new era for college athletes. I hope it's a baseball player. Thoughts? Predictions?

RE: Who will get first paycheck at odu???
If ODU went to the CWS (and especially if they won it) I could see some of their players getting some sort of deal. My guess is it'll be football players that get the first bite of the apple. Not sure if there's one athlete who's more prominent (either through traditional or social media) that would obviously get the first deal, so I could see a bunch of football players getting something.
Related question: Which is the first business to make an offer? Car dealer? Wing joint? Ballard?

The first athletes at my other alma mater to get deals were neither name athletes or even starters. They were backups promoting families and friends small businesses. Speaking of which, while there are a lot of unknowns that’s a definite positive as it gives small businesses a chance to promote affordably with the team they support. And that advertising may also reach back and promote the programs as well.

I think it may take a year to trickle down to mid majors. Even a guy like Ezikpe or LaLa doesn’t have enough celebrity to warrant paying thousands for an endorsement. I wonder if a lot of these deals will be done at the recruiting stage. Say ODU really wants a 5 star QB. They talk to Ballard who may be able to pool together some money with other high capacity donors behind the scenes. Then the coaches tell the QB recruit he will get a contract for $1 million to tweet once about how great Ballard Stadium is. Catch is he only gets that contract IF he signs with ODU. Or perhaps a kid really improves in their sophomore year. Now they say, i want a $25k “advertising contract” if you want me to stay. Go find it for me or I’m transferring. It will become a recruiting tool. That’s where I foresee it all going.

When this type of a **** starts happening, college athletics will become nothing but $$$$. Only schools and teams with the big wallets will be able to compete.
Mod edit; don’t bypass the profanity filter. It’s there for a reason.

Just think about how much of a football team Texas can buy.

When it starts happening? Players have been getting paid at that level for a long time. Now it just won’t be as hidden.

I think the smart play is to spread these deals out over 4 years to incentivize kids to stay for 4 years. Don't just come at someone with a lump sum of $100k, give them $10k at enrollment, $15k after the first year is complete, and $25K for each subsequent season.

RE: Who will get first paycheck at odu???
Is there anything in the rules that states coaches are prohibited from paying their own players? If a coach makes $800k+ a year at a top mid major, I could see that coach telling a recruit that in addition to everything else, he will hire him for $50,000 to tweet a few times about his summer camps or something. If it helps land a kid that gets the team to the NCAAs its a good investment with the performance bonuses in most coaches contracts.
This could hurt team chemistry though, as players start comparing how much they are being offered. If player X gets $100k a year, and has a bad season, while player Y blows up, and is only getting all the normal benefits, that could cause issues.

Programs and their employees aren’t allowed to pay players directly for their NIL.
There is a gray area on whether or not programs will assist the players in landing these NIL deals, since it could appear as the program was paying the player which is still against the rules. A lot of that could come down to state laws.
Boosters are allowed to pay players for NIL, unless it is based on-field performance or to help recruiting. Admittedly, either would be tough to prove, assuming the boosters business is legit.

Good to know. I could see some shell companies being made for this very purpose for the Alabamas of the world. This should actually make it easier for them to pay their players than going through all the secretive shady stuff they've had to use in years past. A fake company created for no purpose other than paying players is nothing compared to the other stuff they've had to go through.

I don't think they would need to do this. They can just redirect donors to use X amount of dollars on specified players. It is really all the same pool of money. I guess the donors don't get the tax deduction for paying a players instead of making a donation though, so that is something that would need to be figured out.

This will have massive ramifications. University of Miami is already lining up boosters with hundreds of thousands just handing out to players.
I can understand why players want to get paid over and above all they are given but its probably going to be the death of college athletics.
