Vandy needs Kumar Rocker to come up big. Otherwise, and realistically, MSU will have its first national title in baseball.
Mississippi State has never won a national championship in ANY Sport.
Any team sport AND any individual sport? That would be a surprise.
No team championships.
Individuals championships:
Men's outdoor track (7)
Men's indoor track (5)
Women's outdoor track (4)
Women's indoor track (2)
Men's tennis (1)
Women's tennis (1)
Boxing (1) - no longer sponsored by NCAA
Given how many individual NCAA championships there are, 21 is hardly a blip on the radar. I'm very surprised.

Thanks for the clarification, BePcr07. I was curious.

No team sports championships. They have won individual championships in several sports, mostly track and field events.
Team sport titles can be hard to win. I was surprised to read the other day that NC State has not won a team sports national title since their 1983 basketball championship.
There are currently 37 official NCAA DI team championships - which doesn't include FBS Football.
Plus, as mentioned, sports like Track and Field, Wrestling, Swimming can have individual champions.

True. But one might reasonably figure Mississippi State would have lucked into at least one team title.

Why are you surprised? When you don't offer Field Hockey, Men's and Women's Lacrosse, Fencing, and Rowing you are behind the 8 ball regarding team sports winning potential. When the sports programs were gutted in the early 90's - all of them were gutted.
Mens basketball has never recovered to it's top 15 program level that it enjoyed from the end of WWII to 91. At the same time that all the programs were gutted we lost our Baseball Coach, Ray Tanner, who went to SC and won 2 national championships there. The women's basketball program has only recently recovered. And winning a national title in Football or Soccer means getting past a nationally top 1,2,or 3 program in the ACC, let alone the nation.
Our last national championship caliber basketball team was tossed out of the NCAA against Georgetown on a bad call that the official admitted he missed - but that's 30 years. The defense never fully matched up with the last three years Phillip Rivers was in Raleigh - that was 2001-2003 - twenty years. We had the talent to win the NCAA women's basketball title this year but petered out at the end. We had the team to win the baseball title this year and pissed that away by not preparing for NCAA bull ****. Almost always these have been self-inflected wounds even when egged on by our friends in Chapel Hill and Durham.
When UNC's entire arm was caught in the cookie jar did they "fess up" and say please punish me? Hell no, they fought and obfuscated and defended their people. When anyone sniffs around Duke and their basketball program, do they hang people out to dry? No they circle the wagons and call the private investigators to look into who is giving them trouble. NC State people like to act like it's still 1940 and we are all in an episode of the Andy Griffith Show where honesty and good intent mean something. It's very easy for a competitor to take advantage of that.

Thanks, Wedge.
That list shows that no school from the state of Mississippi has ever won a team NCAA division 1 championship.

That streak was broken by the Ole Miss women's Golf team this year

Up big in the 7th I'm going out on a limb and congratulating Mississippi State early. A very deserving program and I'm happy they finally got over that hump.
Goodnight!!!

Props to Mississippi State. They've been so good for so long, and no school is more committed to baseball.

From the first inning on, MSU did all the little things you need to do to win, and Vandy couldn't seem to do any of them. They left no doubt they were the best. You have to be happy, not only for those kids, but for an incredible fan base as well.

As the (seemingly) lone Vanderbilt fan posting on csnbbs.com (at least with any frequency), I give 100 percent credit and congratulations to Mississippi State. They were the better team — by far. Outstanding team, coaching staff and fan base.
Vanderbilt had its chance this season with the one-two pitching punch of KR and JL but fell to a much superior foe. Next year, we will be rebuilding and I do not foresee a trip to Omaha.
The loss stings but we move forward.
Again, congrats to MSU.
