Beer Sales
VT approves beer sales to all legal drinkers throughout their stadium.

https://www.pilotonline.com/sports/colle...weaRq0olss

We've discussed the pros and cons with ODU. Apparently ODU uses beer purchase privileges as an incentive for people to donate because Aramark has a contract where they basically keep all the profit from beer sales. At least I think thats what was said if I recall correctly. Is it now time for ODU to follow suit, wait until the Aramark contract can be renegotiated, or just stay as its always been?

And FWIW, I always thought it'd be awesome if OConner or Smartmouth made a specific Big Blue Brew or ODU ale or something.

RE: Beer Sales
I was told they were working on stadium wide beer sales last year in preparation for the limited capacity and lost revenue of playing during the covid year. But we didn’t play and now that the stadium operations should be back to normal, any pressure to get that done is gone.

I believe the Aramark contract is through 2025 and ODU would not see any additional revenue from beer sales after approximately the second home game each year because of how it’s laid out. So they would need to renegotiate the contract before this becomes a possibility, since it will have a negative impact on donations people make to get beer garden access.

As for OConnors, given they are currently a PR nightmare, I doubt ODU partners with them any time soon. Smartmouth would be the wiser option. Elation or Reaver Beach would make sense as well, given their proximity to campus.

Ya, I was going to say. I don't see O'Connor's being on the radar for a while. Which is unfortunate because Kevin is an alumn.

And FWIW, I always thought it'd be awesome if OConner or Smartmouth made a specific Big Blue Brew or ODU ale or something.

I've seen a number of places with school-specific brews, the most recent one I saw was Wichita State
https://www.wichitabrew.com/beers-old/wushock-wheat/

This wasn't just available on campus or at games, it was in the local pubs, hotel bars, everywhere.

THAT would be a forward-thinking thing for a department to do (and you know my feelings on the forward-thinkingness of this administration), but a Big Blue Lager or something that's crushable as a revenue stream via a local brewery. As a craft beer guy, I don't think you can go to market with an IPA with ODU branding - those aren't super approachable for people who aren't already into craft beers. Wheats or golden ales or lagers are your best bet. Maybe even a play off the Natty/Beast parties from the past.

Maybe "Forty-Deuce Lager" or "Bud Metheny Light" or "Friar Tuck's Foamers" -- I dunno.

I don't know if Smartmouth would be the best choice. Location-wise, yes, but one of their brewers is a former ODU wrestler.

I love the idea, don't think we're smart enough to actually make it happen. ODU loves its inflexible contracts and inside-the-box world.

I could see Devils Backbone as well working with ODU. Even though they're definitely not local. One of their folks (a friend that works there) reached out to me about doing a ODU beer and they may have had conversations with them as well. But I'd rather see someone local.

Devils backbone could be interesting just cause they're a part of AB Inbev. If ODU could secure some actual distribution throughout virginia that'd be a big win. Especially if it was a good beer haha

Good point. Forgot about the distribution/reach angle.

My friend owns Back Bay Brewery (VABCH) and Farmhouse Brewery in Chesapeake. I sent him ODAF's info and he is going to reach out... we'll see what happens.

I know the city boundaries are often blurry around here but Farmhouse is in Virginia Beach.

This is long overdue, and just cut off sales after halftime. Win/win all around. I really enjoyed being able to drink a beer (expensive beer at that) when ODU played NSU at the scope a few years ago. And - this is not news - but drinking occurs in the stands anyway during the games. Mostly smuggled spirits.

It’s not happening. Hurts donations and they won’t make any additional revenue off of it. It makes no sense as the deal with Aramark is currently constructed.

I don't have any real understanding of how the financials work, but is there no way that increased attendance from an improved experience would offset the donations received directly to allow access to beer? Is there not a way to maintain that donation money by creating a section in the stadium where there is in seat service. The Point of Sale system that is being used in Ballard is actually the leader in facilitating that type of service, and their brand was actually built on it. In fact, their system is frankly pretty terrible in every other aspect, so the fact that ODU/Aramark decided to go with it makes me wonder if in seat service has always been planned since the opening of Ballard Stadium.

At some point I would suggest revenue be damned. Even if it's a net 0 gain it's a gain in public opinion and improves fan experience.

Look at the revenue with ticket sales compared to donations. As it stands, the beer garden is one of the biggest drivers for donations. If donations tank, we are in big trouble.

I forgot that you have to pay extra to get that access so it wouldn't be a net 0. That is unfortunate to be in that situation because of that Aramark contract. That's a good example of something that made sense at our previous level because it takes the least amount of overhead but provides a service to the fans and the school doesn't have to take on that capex and burden.

As for OConnors, given they are currently a PR nightmare, I doubt ODU partners with them any time soon. Smartmouth would be the wiser option. Elation or Reaver Beach would make sense as well, given their proximity to campus.

What is the issue with O'Connors?

If they sold beer through the Aramark stands, ODAF would be capped at a specific dollar amount in revenue. The current calculation says they would hit that cap after the first two home games. And games 3 through 6 would not add any additional revenue to ODAFs coffers.

As for ticket sales offsetting the lost donations, I don’t see it. They’d have to raise the price of the average ticket and until they start winning more often than not, that seems like a non-starter.

The only sections I could see getting alcohol delivered to their seat is the priority seats and the endzone club level seats, since those aren’t serviced by Aramark.

Now, having said all that, I’ve been told that they are considering requesting a contract re-negotiation with the new president coming aboard. Whether that happens or not is to be determined. But even if they get Aramark to the table, what concessions in the deal would ODU have to give in order for Aramark to lose that leverage over alcohol sales?

Allegations of sexism, racism and retaliation. OConnors recently announced they’re launching an internal investigation into the issue and will start running workplace training for their employees. But the simplest solution appears to be to get Bill O’Connor out of the building. Here’s an article on the allegations.
