RE: Jason and John talked about Larry Brown and Memphis
I don't expect the extreme of Larry being locked in an office on campus. His last violations weren't about recruiting but about on-campus (classroom) activities, right?
He absolutely has connections to recruits. And he is a legend to recruits' fathers. So it makes sense he would have some recruiting responsibilities - like summer circuit.
But I doubt he wants to be a full-fledged traveling recruiter.
I'm okay with whatever Penny, LB, and the Admin work out on this.
As I said before, it's not a make or break with the program or with Penny's career.

I think we have a lot of upside with this position.

Interesting observation. I attributed that to a weak mind and not a weak body. But it's during weight training that you develop the strong mind that gives you the confidence to run through a brick wall.

Hopefully we see the gains from this position.

Your only going to get out what you put in...

And the strength coaches teeth are only as sharp as the head coach allows them to be.

Amazing that Larry Brown would come back and coach at Memphis after he turned us down years ago. I remember when he was a guard for the Virginia Squires and Denver Nuggets in the ABA. He holds the record for most assists in a ABA game with 23.

Once an assistant coach is hired, they are subject to NCAA rules and restrictions. Until that time, in theory, they are not. So the game has always been to have a verbal agreement with the prospective assistant coach and let him go through as many of the camps and such not yet employed so he is not limited by the NCAA.

Plus the new budget year is July 1

Larry Brown has never been subject to NCAA rules and restrictions. I can't fathom anyone from the university allowing him to wander unsupervised, "unofficially" around anyone. If we hire him, we do everything short of locking him up on campus and making him wear an ankle bracelet.

There are no words to describe how stupid that would be.

So that’s a yes? There are no words to describe how stupid it would be to oppose this hire. This is as big as hiring Penny was IMO.

It's a great hire. It is stupid to trust him off campus. Maybe not being in charge will make a difference. I hope it does.

Curious as if it happened that way. Askew was a good but odd player. He was probably recruited by Kansas and reached to them first. He actually spent about a month or so up there. Maybe Kansas realized they could get caught and pushed him back?

LB will be here to teach - both players & Penny. And he's a great bench coach. This is where LB's talents really shine. And BTW, I asked a high level guy in the AD yesterday if LB had been hired & he said "apparently".

I think the story was he accepted the job as HC but his wife wouldn’t move so he backed out

Then we hired Dana

I remember that too after the fact but it seems the excuse he used was that the bulk of the salary was coming from boosters and he wasn't comfortable with that.
