Now for my Debbie Downer. Is Luke really a QB? He is fast, very fast. But will our offense consist of QB draws 40% of the time? I know that he passed for an impressive completion %, but unless his high school tape shows otherwise, I am not seeing someone who can win a lot of games with his arm...yet. His release point led to at least three interceptions off of tips/caroms at the line of scrimmage in some of the B10 games I saw. I would love to be wrong though. Either way, I like this pick up and am excited to see him on the field.
If 40 percent draws works, then it's fine with me
I've seen > 40% QB draws work beautifully...1977 Lincoln HS (San Diego)...but the QB was Marcus Allen.

When referring to JJ's 'arm talent' we're talking about strength.
Put me among those who think Fanuzzi was underrated. That guy was a great passer, but never threw a single ball when he didn't have someone in his face.

I've been rooting for Johnson, Bloomgren has said he has the arm and we know he can run, but when he fell behind Green and others in the QB race it left a huge question mark. A 4-star QB prospect, a McCaffrey, is a promising development to say the least. Whatever we ran in the Spring, we have to open it up even more to take advantage of McCaffrey's skillset and throwing outside the pocket. This would also benefit Johnson and move us away from pro-style passing schemes to ones where even a Tim Tebow level passer could thrive.
Kramer couldn't run, but he was fantastic at moving around in the pocket while looking for second and third options.

We could do a lot of damage with a Wild Owl package that includes both McCaffery and Johnson. This is assuming the Wild Owl qb is allowed (for the first time since Peterson) to actually throw the ball. Johnson option pitches to McCaffery who throws downfield, and vice versa. Spread the field and make the defense actually have to guess what's coming. Our lack of offensive imagination has been stunning the last few years - Tui could be our MVP(erson) this year, assuming he knows what he's doing and is allowed some leeway.

Too new of a Rice fan (15 years?) to be anything but thrilled with this transfer. He is a dual threat QB in a sport that feels mostly like a dual threat world. His passing will be fine and the coaching staff will figure out a way to best use his abundant talents.

Wait, wait, wait....two quarterbacks...at the same time? Inconceivable. What kind of unconventional wisdom are you on sir or ma'am or Owl fan person?

I actually think the guy last year, the TCU transfer, was our best QB of recent years

I can't find a good video, but I believe in 2015-16 Princeton would play with as many as 3 QBs on the field. They lined up in normal-looking formations, but they might have a pitch or handoff to a HB-playing QB for a pass or bring a WR-playing QB into sweep motion for the same kind of threat. It wasn't an even distribution of attempts. They relied on Chad Kanoff as their primary passer. Just looking at the box scores, you would only think they ran an inordinate number of halfback passes (5 or so per game) rather than that the halfback was actually QB2 on the depth chart.

That sounds like an interesting, exciting and possibly game-winning offense that might be similar to the two styles RU talks about blending. If nothing else, it would be fun to watch and hard for other teams to prepare for.

Agree. That talent needs to be used.
+1. Johnson must be on the field, preferably as a WR.
Honestly, of the two players, I think that McCaffery is a far better candidate to move to WR. He is much faster and has the ability to line up in the back field, slot, or out wide, as well as QB in certain plays (saw this on some Nebraska game tape). McCaffery offers much more versatility.
I hear you, but McCaffrey isn't being brought in to compete at WR.

So in a similar situation where Virginia got a 4 star transfer QB they have used him in myriad formations and roles - asked about his role Bronco Mendenhall said “Will he play quarterback?” Yes. Will he play tight end? Yes. Will he play running back? Yes. Will he play slot receiver? Yes. Will he play X receiver? Yes. Will he play Z receiver? Yes. Will he be on the punt team? Certainly. Will he be on punt return? Yes”. Thompson played running back, wide receiver, wildcat quarterback, and rushed for a game-sealing fake punt to clinch a win over North Carolina despite a shoulder injury.

RE: Luke McCaffery to Transfer to Rice from Nebraska
McCaffery will be the guy to beat. You don't get a guy of that stature at Rice and sit him... otherwise the whole 'come start for us rather than ride the bench at p5' doesn't work.
Defenses in CUSA are overwhelmingly predicated on timing... defending zones/areas and angles. A mobile QB, whether because the play is designed to move or because the player moves on his own, change all of those zones and angles... and your WRs are going to be more open as a result. We have not seemed to have a guy who can improvise and still make plays downfield... so if you can cover the angles off the snap and then 'catch' our QB (spy him, or have athletic linemen) you're going to hold us in check. 3rd and 8 therefore may as well be 3rd and 20.
We need a guy who can keep his eyes downfield on 3rd and 8, not get caught from behind and be able to shake, lean or power his way into YAC (contact). 4 ways to win on every play.

Agree 100%. This is McCaffery's job to lose. The McCaffery's didn't agree to come to Rice thinking Luke would be backup, or playing a dual QB role. That's purportedly why he left Louisville after Spring Practice. And we haven't had a guy who could effectively run the read option since Jackson, and that was only for one year since his shoulder injury dramatically limited his running after that. What impressed me with the video of McCaffery is his ability to throw on the run-- going left, going right and even going forward.
