I guess I'm on an island here. Apparently nobody agrees with me. But I think if it was illegal in the '80's, it should be illegal now. Who's going to compensate SMU for the millions of dollars they lost because of the death penalty.

Now it just depends on which program has the boosters with the most money.Car Dealer: "Hey 5-star running back, I will pay you a $25,000 bonus and $5,000/month to be ONE OF my spokesmen for my GM dealership." Athlete: "Well sir, the Ford dealer up at State offered me $8,000/month." College basketball has already been ruined due to the shoe contracts. Look for College football to be right behind them.

How are you ever going to level the playing field? The A5 schools that have the money will benefit. Some of the rest may go bankrupt.

You are not alone. I am for completely eliminating all athletic scholarships. It's all a huge joke now. Let the NFL fund a development league like baseball.

Like stink said, college football has been done for a long time. This is the last nail.

Hey, look at this way. In the Pony Express Days, SMU had the best college football team money could buy. Nice Trans Am Firebird Eric Dickerson enjoyed immensely. The fact that SMU got the death penalty was as big a sham as college football itself. At least SMU is not known as Penn St (Pedophile U). A guy used the slur Sandusky the other day. I was laughing so hard, but others had no idea what he was referring too.

I agree that it is not the same as it once was. About the time the NFL started to dominate, college football started to decline. But I'm not sure that eliminating scholarships would solve the problem. The main places that college football still fills stadiums are the places that have no NFL teams competing with them. e.g. Tuscaloosa, Athens, Gainsville, Baton Rouge, Austin, Norman, Lincoln, Columbia, Eugene, etc.

Yeah. That ain't college football. Its semi pro football with illiterates wearing school colors. They arent really students. Tutors, online classes, separate dining and living facilities. Heck most schools dont really want the athletes interacting with the general student population. It's all a farce. Athletes that can barely read on an 7th grade level graduating in three years. Lulz. The old guys that pumped money into these programs are passing on. Every inch of ground around most big programs has been monetized by tailgate companies for corporations. The NIL is not altruism for student athletes, it's just a new revenue stream.

Many of the younger generation resent college athletes and dont give thinkers damn about college football.

So yeah, go the ivy league route and let semi pro ball flourish. Its alm a farce anyway. Maybe colleges should actually start having a college team in addition to their semi pro team. You've seen this at some schools, they call it rugby.

Semi pro leagues have failed to date. Perhaps it's because colleges are competing with them. Colleges should not be in the semi pro business, but we're going the wrong direction, paying the players in addition to giving them scholarships. And a huge payroll on top of that, from the Athletic Director on down. Let the pros pay for all that. Maybe you're right, rugby and soccer make sense, let the athletes who want money go to the semi pros, and the true students go to college.

Honestly that's not very many. College baseball players uve know would leave immediately if offered a minor league deal. I could be wrong though, things might have changed

Honestly that's not very many.

In terms of the number of major league baseball players that are out there, that is a very small percentage. Rice and Texas had great programs for many years, but not many of their players ever went to the majors.

The sneaking secret those that hype college baseball dont tell you. The best players are already gone to the minors, college baseball is for the leftovers. Football and basketball are semi pro.

Yasmani Grandal (Miami (Fla.)
DJ LeMahieu (LSU)
James McCann (Arkansas)
Whit Merrifield (South Carolina)
Gerrit Cole (UCLA)
Sonny Gray (Vanderbilt)
Brandon Woodruff (Mississippi State)
Alex Bregman (LSU)
Walker Buehler (Vanderbilt)
Pete Alonso (Florida)
Shane Bieber (UC Santa Barbara)

All of the above as well as many others disagree.

Honestly that's not very many.

In terms of the number of major league baseball players that are out there, that is a very small percentage. Rice and Texas had great programs for many years, but not many of their players ever went to the majors.

Yeah, I'm talking from experience not stats. I edited my post above. I'm not sure I've known a college baseball player that hung around if offered a minor league spot. I'm sure it happens. I could be wrong, I've just not known it to be the case.

Looked in up in the interwebs briefly. 209 minor league teams, rosters of about 30. That's 6000 + minor leaguers.

Looked this up too, there are over 34,000 college baseball players.

RE: Slippery Slope
Enough talk about baseball. A good model though. Talking college football and basketball, is it possible to alter the current trajectory? If so, how? How did the Ivy League do it? Can you imagine the Big 10 or SEC doing the same thing? How can colleges, corporate America, and the media agree on a solution?

With the minor league contraction this year, the number of teams has been reduced to 4 per MLB team, or 120 total. MLB is clearly shifting more of the responsibility (and cost) of player development to university teams.

Is college baseball following the same slippery slope that college football and basketball followed? Will the colleges that can't afford it drop baseball? Will they have enough team sports to maintain their status or will the NCAA adjust the requirement? Will colleges have to pay baseball players too? Will MLB pay for any of the additional costs, or will the students tuition or taxes be raised to compensate for them? No wonder college costs are spiraling out of control. No wonder community colleges with no athletics are booming. Who can afford a college education? Will this contribute to "income inequality"? What would Bill Buckley say about all of this?
