RE: 2021 football schedule unveiled
My issue is that we have 'questionable depth' despite what must clearly have been a focus on the issue for some time now and perhaps 3 players who have all seen the field in the last two years. It's not as if we graduated an all-conference player and he'd taken 90% of the snaps... or we'd lost upper classmen to graduation and had unknown underclassmen like some of our conference mates.

I might feel better if we had established ourselves as a 'pound the rock' team and I expected to see a guy or two on the 'great shape' list at RB... or WR...

What? You don’t think the Owls’ 2.8 yds per attempt rushing stats from 2020 will get the Owls on the Great Shape list? Me neither.

Too many. Time to show results or get shown the dooor.

Past time, but he’ll obviously get a chance to show progress. It needs to be significant progress IMO.

RE: 2021 football schedule unveiled
I think the main issue with the QB's is there has been no continuity from year to year. This will be Bloomgren's 4th year and probably the 4th straight year we've had a different starter to begin the season (if Constantine wins the job).

Wiley Green is the only guy who has been part of all 4 of Bloomgren's seasons (but he's never been the full-time starter - he's thrown 10, 142 and 88 passes in the previous three seasons). Jovoni Johnson is entering his third year so he has some experience too.

But I'd say in general, our 2018 starter was Stankavage, in 2019 it was Stewart and in 2020 it was Collins. We've pretty much played 11 different QB's in those three years due to ineffectiveness and injuries.

Bummer that Bloom couldn't convince Collins to stay for a final season.

I thought he was pretty good (or at least not horrible).

I suspect we'll have a new AD soon. Karlgaard is looking for another job. Whomever comes in will have his own prospective coaches in mind for football. He won't be patient at all with Bloomgren. If Bloomgren's team struggles to 6-6 or 7-5 this season, I expect him to be let go. JK made a bad hire. 'Pound the rock' hasn't worked. This has to be a very big season, or all of them are gone.

Pound the Rock hasn't worked, and I've been disappointed in Bloomgren's stubborn refusal to give it up. However, the team is in much better shape in general than it was 4 years ago. And, they've improved (albeit very slowly) year to year. I also understand that the new OC is being given more leeway to install his better version of Bloom's preferred pro-style offense. So, there's good reason to be optimistic --- just worried how an 0-3 start will be viewed.

True statement. We are better, and the reigns have been turned over to a very capable OC. I'm ready.

I just don't see how an 0-3 start can be considered acceptable.

In year four, a Rice program that is trending toward the top of the G5 (where we all want to be) should be able to beat one of the following:

A flagging UH program
An improving but not yet "there" Arkansas program
A UT program with lots of talent but a new coach

To be clear-I'm not expecting to go 3-0-but anything less than 1-2 and it will show that we've made no progress as a program.

I agree. We must find a win in the first three games. An 0-3 start is unacceptable in year four of this coach's tenure. If we start 0-3, we're looking at an average 6-6 or 7-5 season. That's not good enough.

handle #4??

I don't mind that Bloom has been stubborn about his offense. What I mind is that he has been stubborn without regard to the talent he has or can recruit. We've certainly seen him embrace more of a passing offense (with 'more' success than without it) and the new OC seems to do that even more... but Bloom wants him to run and that's fine... IF you can run. Translating into IF you can recruit superior running linemen or backs. Hat did this by recruiting kids whom the passing teams didn't want.... 6'1 270.... not 6'5 310. Bloom has been recruiting 6'5 310, but he's only been able to 'get' the 5th or 10th or 50th best guy with those attributes, and hasn't been able to 'coach them up' (or so it seems based on results) to be highly successful... even just against CUSA.

I am a results guy, so I care more about the W-L than the recruiting ranking or how he uses his players. My thinking is that if the coach is doing something right (or wrong) it will be reflected in his results. So I am less concerned with the bricks or the 2x4s than the edifice as a whole.

Question for the Parliament - does the 20-0 win over favored Marshall on the road count as a SigWin?

Since when is a 7-5 season "average" or "struggling" (as you characterized it in a previous post)? And you have to weigh in who and where we're playing those first 3 games. UT is going to be a preseason Top 15 team, and Arkansas is vastly improved, and we're playing both on the road to sold out home crowds. I do think UH at home is winnable, but even if we do lose, I would not call that an "unacceptable" start, and would not be an indicator of how good this team could be when all is said and done.
