Can the 12th Membership in the AAC Be Purchased?
It's no secret that the AAC can't find a suitable 12th member. They desire a program that will add strength to their conference, both financially and in perception. The CFP could be expanding without the AAC's inclusion as a power member. Under these circumstances, I wonder if the AAC might just settle for the cash....

With no options that live up to their criteria, could the AAC basically sell their 12th spot to whichever university was willing to pay the most money? And if so, what realistic price could the conference expect?

In theory ... yes.

Not if you phrase it that way LOL....buying a slot sounds so dirty and would mean college athletics and presidents are all about the $$....can't have that

But if you call it a partnership investment or something like that, then maybe you could pull it off.

The AAC is looking for a 12th investment partner that is striving to help better the league the student athletes it serves.

Another possibility is what the Big Ten did, the new school didn't get full shares until X # of years in the conference.

If the above happened you definitely loose your prime candidate BYU. Army isn't coming and you really only need to fill a FB spot. So you might as well invite UConn back for FB only and a few Men's and Women's BB games a season or offer AF a FB only position. Colorado ST would also be an option for all sports kicking Memphis to the east division too. Still don't think any SB, CUSA, MAC or floating independents offer any more than those schools which would want all sports inclusion for an "Extremely High Buy In" to play in the AAC. 03-idea 04-cheers

The problem with that approach is that you then get Liberty.

I think the Big 12 did that with TCU, also.

I was going to say. Rumors were that Liberty tried to buy their way into the Sun Belt and CUSA.

Liberty all sports it is then for all the freak'n money you can get out of them. Nice Virginia fit right into the eastern Temple, Cinn, and ECU triangle. 04-jawdrop 04-jawdrop 04-jawdrop 03-lmfao 03-lmfao 03-lmfao 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot 04-cheers

Yeah, that's not a rumor. It happened, and it rubbed multiple administrators the wrong way at both leagues.

it's *sort of* what Memphis tried to do with the Big 12.

No UConn. They made their choice and are a good fit with the New Big East. If they can succeed as a football independent, then good on them. If they can't, who cares? UConn football would bring nothing to the AAC. I'd vote for Buffalo.

So it can be done, but it's kind of underhanded and frowned upon.

Didn't TCU fork over a ton of money for their Big12 invitation?

This. Liberty would outbid any public university if you tried to make it an open auction.

The answer is "NO" or rather "HELL NO" ... but actually "YES" in a way.

The way to bribe the American is to take your school's, say $12m Football budget and up it to $19m a year (if spent wisely) with all that new money you printed up to try and bride the AAC. Assuming you are not throwing it down the rat hole but actually investing in things to improve your football team, it's coaching and it's recruiting strength, then I guarantee you will catch the attention of the AAC. That is how you "buy" your way in.

Now go raise that extra $6-7m to donate to football every year. Your school will thank you.

What if the fee was 10 million and the conference then used that as start-up money to create a high playing bowl that would have a payout large enough to attract a quality P5 opponent? THATS a long term investment in the conference that could potentially pay dividends to its membership for decades.

The Big12 already had all the major bowls it wanted.

RE: Can the 12th Membership in the AAC Be Purchased?
Just a little context is in order in regard to Liberty and the belt & CUSA. At the time, an invitation was considered a cost of entry for FBS. There were no other options until we were granted the exemption.

Would we be open to a potential auction? Absolutely. And athletically the AAC could do much worse than the Flames for that final slot. Culturally is another story as we sort out the mess that Junior left us to manage.
