After a highly competitive game where they had a chance to beat a very good Nebraska team they lay an egg against NJIT a team barely over .500 and get bounced. Yikes.

I really, really like Brant. He covers UNCW better than anyone, but I wasn't sure where he was coming from most of this weekend. On Saturday, @ing D1Baseball asking why they still had NU as their projected CAA rep, to complaining about people talking about UNC's chances at an at-large bid, and then complaining about a bang-bang play at first. Maybe he was just amped up with the excitement from the tournament, but I haven't seen that homer side of him in the past.

This play was too close to complain about and if that is the worst call that went against us, the umps weren't a factor.

Appreciate it, and I'm hopeful we can write better + deeper stories for 2021-22 as we find more contributors. I think COVID kind of torpedoed this past year and kept people from getting involved. We've got some good momentum going into the next year, and hopefully, that will attract a few students that really want to pursue this.

re: last weekend's homerism, I'm still working out what I want the Perch to become. I have what I hope are some cool ideas for things that we can accomplish with it that go beyond just writing stories. At the core, with whatever it becomes, writing factual, non-homer stories are what we're going to do.

With that said, what role and voice can we have with social media? My goal in all of this is to have fun, and hopefully in some way, help UNCW athletics and UNCW athletes. Sometimes, I think that means advocating for us and having a little fun with what we're posting there, whether that be poking the rivals, trying to remind the national outlets who we are and so on.

That's still a work in progress in figuring out exactly what our style is going to be. Bottom line, though, is that everything will always be done in the name of getting UNCW recognition.

We're never going to get the attention of ACC programs, but it is a bit exhausting to check out D1 or BA that Saturday morning, and see they're more focused on UNC maybe squeaking into the tournament rather than a REALLY GREAT final in the CAA.

Anyway, as always, thanks for reading. I didn't realize just how much fun I'd have with doing this and it's given me great balance now that I have a 9-to-5 that isn't in sportswriting.

RE: CAA Baseball Championship Final: # 2 UNCW vs. # 1 NU (Sunday - 1 PM) WINNER TAKE ALL
Was really hoping NU wouldn’t go down 0-2, as I don’t believe they’ve won a game at a Regional in a long time, if not ever.

I believe we’ve only gone down 0-2 at a Regional once: Coach Scalf’s final season, when we were a surprise CAA champion and drew a 4-seed. Not trying to throw shade on NU, as they had a tough draw, just saying I think we probably would have taken a game with this squad based on our OOC performance during the season, and based on how well prepared we’ve been for Regionals in the past in the Scalf/Hood system.

But you can’t win a Regional game if you can’t get in, so we’re just left with a “what might have been.” Next year let’s get back where we belong.

Absolutely have fun! That's what's missing from UNCW sports as a whole. UNCW NEEDS an indentity that will dramatically increase the size of the fan base beyond just UNCW grads. In the age of social media, FUNNY memes can be shared and enjoyed by everyone. Make that a priority and a goal. And if you can engage other schools while you're at it, even better. Use the beach theme as much as possible so there's a common thread that people can expect.

Think about creating a "meme character", ala baby yoda, as a meme muse.

UNCW marketing as a whole is so pitiful, and so lacking, that any cohesive strategy and follow thru would be a hit. We're the sixth largest university in the state, so there is a fan base of alumni and students that are starving for a unique identity that fits our school. It shouldn't be that difficult since we do have a unique location near the beach.

Gotta disagree somewhat with the draw that NE had,it was about as good as you could hope for coming from the CAA. The CAA is such a weak conference for the most part that they will not get a favorable draw unless UNCW has something like a 40 win season. They played poorly and got bounced out quickly.
It has been a crazy tournament with some unreal scores with Florida getting drilled after being preseason No.1. Notre Dame has also surprised me with the runs they have put up. EZU looking like they will make the next round if they play good.

Brant, I appreciate the response. I said in the initial post, but I’ll reiterate, you provide the best coverage of UNCW. There are others that do a good job covering mid-majors, but UNCW doesn’t have anyone passionate about UNCW; I think the Seahawk Perch is addressing that. As you said, we need more passionate fans and we need a commitment from the university to grow the experience.

I don’t oppose you being a homer occasionally, but I thought your comments were inconsistent with what you typically write. There will always be fight for attention and more often than not, we’re going to be brushed off for the ACC schools. I don’t have the answer for that, but being critical of others recognition rather celebrating who we are and our own merit sends the wrong message and will ultimately be dismissed.

You’re good at this and I appreciate you working to celebrate UNCW.

Nonsense. The shot at Carolina was the one that made the most sense, it's just a non-starter. It hasn't worked for any school and it does more to align us as an "other" than it does to establish ourselves as something worthy based on our own merit. Banging the "Carolina gets favoritism" drum won't get UNCW noticed.

The comment about D1 baseball is what I took the most exception to. It's pretty standard practice for those publications to project the regular season winner in one-bid leagues. Calling them out on Twitter for projecting Northeastern as a four seed in their projections just because they were in the losers bracket didn't make sense to me.

When people complain about the Yankees getting preferential treatment, what is your response? Have all the years of whining about Yankees/East Coast bias helped small market teams get equal coverage?

I think the chirping has helped level the playing field some. The Yankees haven't won but 1 title in 20 years. But ultimately the best way to get coverage is winning.
