RE: 2021 NCAA Baseball Tournament
I have to comment on a stupid thing I found out about the baseball tournament and even though odu won, I can't believe the highest seed doesn't automatically get to be home team. After the first game, it is all done by a freaking coin flip. After winning 43 games, being ranked number 11 and you have to play at a lower seeds home field, which I can understand but not being home team as a reward for having a great season is the most absurd rule in college sports. DUMB

Rated among the nation’s elite via RPI for the bulk of 2021, Old Dominion made perfect sense as a potential host site bidder. The problem? It quite literally isn’t allowed to.

Under current NCAA regional hosting guidelines, the Monarchs’ home park — Bud Metheny Baseball Complex — isn’t technically eligible to host given its lack of a handful of behind-the-scenes necessities like vast media seating or an advanced television camera setup.

I just chalk it up to - it's baseball (and softball). I guess they do that to try and be more equitable?

UCSB benefited from that in 2016

Florida was the preseason #1 team. The number 15 seed. They bowed out 0-2 after getting curbstomped at home 19-1 by South Alabama.

Michigan is the first team eliminated from the Last 4 In group.

It does sound like the school (AD and coach) were aware of this possibility because I can’t find any comment indicating surprise or frustration.

Yeah, the NCAA guidelines are known in advance, everyone knows whether their ballpark meets the requirements for hosting a regional.

I understand the bud metheny thing, it's the not being the home team every game vs south carolina no matter where it is played. Number 1 team or highest rated team should get last at bat, because what is the point of being number one seed. You cannot convince me that is not a dumb rule. I wonder how many non p5 schools win that coin flip, just saying

... and my Bulls are one win a way from advancing to a first-ever super-regional.

Back to back wins over Florida and Miami is epic for us. Hope we can close the deal and win the regional. Won't be a gimme that's for sure.

ND missed two extra points in beating UConn 26-3 yesterday.

It beat Central Michigan 10-0 on Friday.

Now, I have probably jinxed them, but the UConn/CMU winner at noon today must beat ND twice in South Bend or the Irish advance to a superregional matchup with Mississippi State.

Home teams, or last at bats, alternate depending on their place in the bracket. For instance, Dallas Baptist is playing in the TCU regional. Last night in their game with TCU, DBU was the home team, though it was on TCU's home field. If they play again, TCU will presumably be the home team as the higher seed.

It is possible for the visiting team to have the last at bat in a regional game.

It's effectively alternating, but technically there are rules setting the home team for each regional game.

On the first day, the higher seed is home team in each game. After that, in each game, the home team is the team that has played the fewest games in the regional as home team. If both teams have played the same number of games as home team in the regional, a coin flip decides home team.

IIRC, that has not been decided yet. Mississippi State is in the driver's seat in their regional like ND is in theirs, but like ND they still need to win another game, tonight or tomorrow, to win their regional.

RE: 2021 NCAA Baseball Tournament
some notes from the day.

Nebraska defeats #1 Arkansas and will play them again to see who advances out of Fayetteville.
UC Irvine defeats #9 Stanford and will play them again to see who advances out of Stanford.
Virginia defeats #11 Old Dominion. They have a rematch to settle the Columbia Regional.
Southern Miss defeats #12 Ole Miss. They too, will have a regional final in Oxford.
LSU defeats #14 Oregon. They have a rematch tomorrow with the winner advancing out of Eugene.

#2 Texas, #5 Arizona and #8 Texas Tech advance to the Super Regionals.
#6 seed TCU and #16 Louisiana Tech both fall. Dallas Baptist and Oregon State play one more game to settle who advances out of the Fort Worth Regional. NC State wins the Ruston (La Tech) regional to advance to the Super Regionals.

#13 East Carolina advances to the Super Regionals. Their AAC buddy South Florida needs one win over South Alabama to join them in the Supers.

RE: 2021 NCAA Baseball Tournament
All four of the Last 4 Teams In have been eliminated. UC Santa Barbara did the best out of that group, going 2-2 in Tucson with both wins over Oklahoma State by a combined score of 27-7. And losing both games to Arizona by a combined score of 9-2.

Alabama and North Carolina both went 1-2. Michigan was 0-2

RE: 2021 NCAA Baseball Tournament
Interesting note pointed out in the super regional matchups listed below -- the NCAA tournament committee set up covid testing protocols at each of the 16 regional sites, and decided that each super regional this year has to be played at one of those 16 ballparks so that they don't have to go through the hassle of setting up protocols at a "new" site.

So, if there's a super regional pairing between two teams that didn't host a regional, the committee will place that super regional at one of the regional sites.

For example, if Nebraska wins on Monday, the committee would pick one of the regional sites that isn't already hosting a super regional and send Nebraska and NC State there.

RE: 2021 NCAA Baseball Tournament
Notre Dame bludgeoned Central Michigan 14-2 to win the regional in three games.

It scored 50 runs in those games and gave up 5.

(10-0; 26-3; 14-2)

It hit 15 home runs and had 23 total extra base hits.

Its starting pitchers went 9, 7 and 8 innings. The bullpen had cobwebs on them.

ND 1B Niko Kavadas was named regional MVP.

He went 6-for-10 with five home runs (all moon shots), 13 RBI, 9 runs scored and six walks.

Kavadas and others said that their anger at being snubbed for a Top 8 seed fueled their performance this weekend.

All of the undecided regionals you posted involve single games being played today to decide them, except:

(1) USF and USA might have to play "twice" today. At noon they will complete yesterday's game which was suspended with USA leading 4-0 in the 5th inning.

Should USA hold on and win, they will then play again in the evening to decide the regional. If USF rallies and wins the suspended game, we win the regional.

(2) Mississippi State and Campbell might have to play twice. They play at noon today and if Mississippi State wins, they win the regional. Should Campbell win, they play a rematch in the evening to decide it.

USA defeated USF 4-0 in the game that was resumed from yesterday.

So they will play a rubber match this afternoon to decide the Gainesville regional.
