As I mentioned before I’m really good with either of these quality guys. Are we sure Childress is out? I saw a comment here that he was so I’ll just take that as good but curious as to why. Not sure I’m a Childress fan based on comments of a former player of his. I put a lot of stock in guys who played the game.
Should be an interesting few days coming up.
Childress would be a good hire for Rice. Lots of former players that really like him.
Agree there likely are I’m just referring to what was posted here. There are ALWAYS two viewpoints to every issue. But none on this board spoke with experience playing for both programs save one. But, I have seen many positive comments from a&m players so that has merit as well.
Thanks Walt for the Kendall reference regarding Childress. I knew I saw something about it.

After his long run at aTm, Childress is probably both 1) able to wait for the right spot, and 2) potentially attractive for a lot better jobs than Rice now is.

Why not?

According to Wikipedia, he has only coached for Detroit for one year, and that's it. He has no experience on the collegiate level as an assistant or head coach.

True, but not included in the Wikipedia summary is that he spent several years as MLB Director of Player Development. He also "coached" as an integral part of the Cruz family baseball camps.

I guess that helps a little. I'd be more confident in him if he had some meaningful time coaching specifically at the college level.

RE: Bragga is OUT Per Kendall Rogers
I would liken Cruz to Darin Erstad as the two have had similar careers. Erstad was the #1 overall pick in the 1995 draft (Cruz was 3rd - Todd Helton out of Tennessee was the other college baseball hitting star that year and #8 overall in that draft). Erstad didn't have much coaching experience before being named the head coach at Nebraska in 2012. I don't think Erstad was bad at Nebraska, but he wasn't the lightning in a bottle they hoped for either (267–193–1 in eight years and four regionals, but no super regionals).

I think the main difference is it's a lot easier to recruit in Texas compared to Nebraska when it comes to college baseball. Cruz could be very successful if he was able to tap into the Latin American baseball community, but I'm not 100 percent certain that is possible at Rice.

Why? It’s very Parliament-like to migrate a thread to something other than the thread title.

Is Cruz actually under consideration? Is he interested? This is the only place where I’ve seen him mentioned as a possible candidate. My sense was that it’s probably down to either Allen or Hallmark.

Gautreau is out, per Kendall.

If Kendall not tied in to JK,as some have suggested, he must be getting this info from Texas/UTSA side. My gut says a surprise is coming. But good if Kendall is right as well.

Not surprising. As I said previously, Gautreau and Allen have similar resumes, but Allen has the strong Texas and Houston ties, which Gautreau does not. Also, Allen had the prior relationship with JK due to his interviews the last time round. Kendall is no doubt getting his info from Childress, Allen and Gautreau themselves.

I think the concern all of us have is with whom is JK consulting-- and seeking input-- on this search. Is anyone else involved in the process outside he and Rick Mello?

My guess is we'll have an announcement by Wednesday, if not sooner.

Good point on "consultation group". I hope he has a strong group with Rice baseball ties giving input. I think, if possible, former players should be consulted as well not necessarily for their approval just for their input on characteristics they feel should be considered. Also agree that a likely decision is this week. My front runners are still Cruz, Allen, Hallmark (but now, not necessarily in that order). Childress sill a wildcard but I think still needs to be included for now. All really good choices so I hope, at least the list, is right.

Hallmark does seem to check most boxes. But is anyone (with more insight and knowledge than I have) concerned that none of his teams finished higher than 3rd - and that UTSA had a losing record this year both in and out of conference?

RE: Bragga is OUT Per Kendall Rogers
My take
1) because this has been screwed up more than once already, the bar for success here is incredibly high.
2) the fact that it seems to have been slower than we originally thought... I think the initial comment was '3 weeks' which i thought was odd... implies to me that it involves someone in the CWS. That concerns me on the surface due to the lack of significant Rice ties, but if it works out, I'll be perfectly fine.

Said differently.... I'd rather go down with a Rice guy than with someone who isn't... because if things go well, the Rice guy is more likely to stay than someone who isn't. If we aren't planning for whomever we hire to be extremely successful, we're not doing it right.

The initial comment was NOT "3 weeks". Rather, JK said it could be as quickly as 10 days, but certainly within 3 weeks. It will be 2 weeks tomorrow. He also said in his video presser that previous Rice ties would be a strong consideration; not a prerequisite, but a factor.
