Have you ever missed a big personal event to watch a ball game?
I know we have some stories here. Can't wait to hear these. I have missed birthday parties to watch a game, but I have a friend who missed a funeral to go to a game. He said his friend who passed away would have did the same. How about it, what was the big event you missed to go to the game?

Weddings….absolutely
If you’re inconsiderate enough to schedule your fall wedding on a big college football weekend, I will not be there. When my daughter got married, she knew the rule. She scheduled a June wedding.
I don’t worry about my Son. He won’t allow his bride to screw up a college football weekend.
Truth is you schedule a wedding in the fall in the South, you are forcing folks to choose between two things they love.

RE: Have you ever missed a big personal event to watch a ball game?
Over the years, there have been very few games I would have truly hated missing (though many I would have been somewhat disappointed missing) due to a wedding, funeral, graduation, etc.
A game for which I was pained by not being able to see in person was the Vanderbilt baseball national title win on June 25, 2014. I watched at home by myself but was in frequent phone contact with my girlfriend at the time (a Vanderbilt employee at the time and a huge VU baseball fan), my brother (who teaches at VU) and my father (who had his young life saved at VU, worked Vandy football games selling peanuts and popcorn as a kid and ranks Tim Corbin among his all-time favorite coaches of any sport). It I had missed watching that on TV and all the excited phone conversations with my lady, Pops and brother ... that would have been devastating.
And yes, I cried tears of joy that night. I felt so fortunate and humbled that I at least got to see on TV and share with loved ones.

My wife went into labor with our first child about an hour before the start of the 1977 NCAA tournament final. The fact that I'm alive to tell about it tells you that I didn't skip that one. Other than that, no ball game has ever come close to being a priority.

Family comes first. I would never miss a family event over a game.

I made it a point to get married the weekend of Hawaii at Ohio St so that my friends and family didn’t have to choose between a must watch football game and the wedding.

I've definitely spent some weddings pissed off at the fact that there was no TV or cell service for me to stream the game on my phone and others glued to the small TV in the backroom with 10 other dudes.

Family first. I have a couple friends I’ll throw into that group.

My mom had her second marriage when we sons were in our early twenties, scheduled NYD, then the Buckeyes made the Rose Bowl. I didn't skip the reception, but then again it was in Columbus so there was a portable TV at the reception with the game on.

RE: Have you ever missed a big personal event to watch a ball game?
During my teenage years I had girlfriends break up with me because I would choose to go to the game or watch the game on tv. Now as an adult I have missed weddings, and did not interact with my own guests at my 40th bday party until the Cincinnati vs Tulsa game was completed.

No, minor one's like people birthday's who I am not close with. Other wise I go by the motto, happy wife, happy life. Not worth it, I can DVR the game if needed.

My mother married my stepdad on the day of the famous BC/Miami game. I attended both the wedding and the reception like a good son, but fortunately I was able to sneak away just in time to catch Flutie to Phelan...

I've missed work. Taken a sick day to watch a game. That's about it.

RE: Have you ever missed a big personal event to watch a ball game?
Family comes first, but I always work around things. My sister got married on Saturday, October 1st, 1988 in Houston. I flew in from LA to be at the wedding but I told my family and my sister that I would be leaving early on Sunday to get back to LA for the Raiders game against the Bengals. My family would have liked for me to stick around for a Sunday breakfast with the two families, but at least I made the wedding.
Two days later, I had a job interview at a big, prestigious hospital for a job that I wanted and would be good for my career. The interview lasted much longer than planned and I was asked by the hiring manager if I could stay longer. I told him I could not, that I had to go, that I had a ticket to Game 1 of the NLCS (Mets vs. Dodgers). We agreed that I would come back in the morning to continue the interview and I ended up getting the job. I can usually make things work, but if not, then you do what is right.
