The WCWS (and men’s CWS) is the final round of the playoffs and consists of 8 schools. The playoffs include 64 schools including conference champions and wild cards. The first round is called regionals and consists of 16 4-school groups and is double elimination. Top 2 in each regional play a best of 3 regional final. The regional winners go to super regionals and play a best of 3 with another regional winner. Super regional winners go to the WCWS.

Not quite. The 4 team regionals are double elimination only. The super regionals are first one to win twice. Then the CWS and WCWS break down into 2 groups of 4 with double elimination. The winners of the 2 four team groups play a best of 3 for the championship.

So, the conference champs are guaranteed a place in the regionals? (Phase 1)

If so, who represented the American?

Did you get the memo that UConn moved to the Big East?

Baseball has the same format I believe. Seems weird to me to have a different format for the regionals and super regionals. The CWS/WCWS have a different format as well. If you like the 8 team format, why not just have 8 8 team super regionals leading into the CWS/WCWS and be done with it? Or do it like the basketball tournaments, down to 16 the first week, down to 4 the second week, and the World Series being the "Final Four"?

I’d prefer the groups of 4 in each stage

The baseball tournament formerly had 8 regionals leading to the CWS. In 1999, the field expanded to 64 and super regionals were added.

I presume that 1) the extra round helps with revenue, and 2) the increase in regional sites/subsequent decrease in teams per site helps with weather issues. The fewer games/teams per site, the fewer games impacted by rain. You don't want to have an eight-team regional tournament extended an extra day or two due to weather when the winner has to turn around and go to Omaha for another tournament.

The format fits the nature of the sport.

Baseball is a game of multiple chances and so is softball(derivative of baseball).

With MLB, you get a 162 game season and best of series in the playoffs. College is much the same. They play 3 game series during the regular season and the postseason, albeit a more unique format, offers teams a chance to win more often than not.

Single elimination wouldn't be much fun for baseball or softball.

Just as an aside, the regionals are pretty darn fun for fans.

I used to go to the baseball regionals a good bit in the 90s when Alabama had good quality teams. You get teams from all over the country and games all weekend. It's a nice time.

Bama regularly hosts softball regionals, but I have not had a chance to go. The softball games are fun environments though...small, intimate stadiums with lots of people bringing their own lawn chairs. Almost like tailgating.

Fun fact for those not familiar...

The College World Series is always in Omaha. The Women's College World Series is always in Oklahoma City.

Totally agree. Baseball is much more "random" than football or hoops. E.g., the best hitters only get a hit about 33% of the time. Plus if you have Sandy Koufax on the mound he can beat a far better overall team by himself on a given day.

So a single-elimination format would favor luck over overall team skill.

Yes, when LSU hosts a regional, that's always an awesome three-day weekend for the fans. Multiple games each day, lots of tailgaiting, etc.

Thanks for posting. I binged on college baseball yesterday and went to bed when Stanford eliminated a pesky Cal Irvine team.

After pitching a perfect game Fouts didn't have it and the Noles did. Oklahoma showed how solid they are and their ability to adapt was evident with their response JMU's brilliant pitcher.

JMU ran out of gas. That's what happens when teams rely on one pitcher for the whole tournament. I was pullimg for them, too.

I was convinced that Fouts couldn't be beat. That girl is special!
