I'm gonna say less teams in conferences and less replays. Nothing kills momentum like a video challange. I mean, what do you pay referees for anyway? How about you? What was better?

Bowl games were purely exhibitions and there was no playoff in football. The AP only ranked a Top Ten. Coaches were paid like professors and players stayed for four years. Those were the good old days.

Bowl games on New Year’s Day all day on all three major networks.

Players staying all four years and games were shorter…perhaps less commercials.

MWC: I TOTALLY agree! I loved just planting myself in front of the TV with leftover Chinese food, flipping between multiple games all day.

Really, most things about college football are better today. The main thing being far, far more games to watch thanks to the 1984 supreme court decision.

The one thing I really miss are the four traditional bowl games on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. That was a uniquely fun 24 hours of watching football, with all the winners proudly proclaiming that they were #1.

Then waiting for the polls to decide it.

No piped in music and artificial noise, no sky boxes for the so called elite, you played no matter the weather, and all signage was school related, and all of the fans sat on the same level inside the stadium, and no players sat out the bowls.

I've got one even better. I think the ticket to my first Iron Bowl was about 7 bucks. Student tickets we're $2.

Jefferson-Pilot Sports. More specifically, the free pregame meals and $50.00 per game check I got from J-P Sports for holding the boom mic or video cord for home games at U-Hall. Getting paid, as a broke student, to have floor seats for ACC games you were going to attend anyway was the best.

RE: What was better about college sports when you were college age?
Not sure, I didn't watch much college sports when I was college age. More into NFL, because Sunday afternoon was much more time to recover from Friday night than Saturday afternoon.

By contrast, when I was past "college age" and in Grad School, it was great fun to get some tickets for some early season easy beats and enjoy the big stadium atmosphere and the Vols walloping some St. Mary's Little Sisters of the Poor. Toward the end of the game it was also fun to watch the male cheerleaders who push-upped the Vols current scoreline after every score start to struggle as the Vols total headed toward or past the 50 points range.

I remember pulling up at a Georgia-Florida game in Jacksonville. Storming, heavy rain, water mid-calf deep in the parking lot. Figured we would wait a while in the car. But no! Wife said everyone would be there. We waded to the stadium, got there just before kickoff, and were among the last people in our seats. By that time there was lighting everywhere. Didn't slow down the action at all. The mudbowl that was the field did slow down the athletes a little.

Nothing. I was more into the NFL and NBA back then since college sports weren't as accessible on TV.

RE: What was better about college sports when you were college age?
The USCs, Texas and Michigans of the world were still rich and powerful but the gap was not as wide as it is now. Just look at Texas and Louisiana-Monroe budgets now. I think a certain network became too powerful and part of that is what caused all this realignment craziness in the last 30 years.

I went to college right at the beginning of the Alliance which eventually became the BCS. The SWC just dissolved, the WAC-16 and Big XII just started their first season and Miami was ruling the Big East. It’s been 25 years and it feels like an eternity.

Didn't slow down the action at all. The mudbowl that was the field did slow down the athletes a little.

Auburn beat Miami in the early 70's 3-0 when we kicked an early field goal before the outer bands of a Category 1 Hurricane hit and blew so hard the rest of the game was played to protect field position. A year or two before we lost in Knoxville in a downpour from a passing front that nearly dropped 5 inches of rain during the game. Both Tennessee and Auburn punted on 3rd downs for fear of mishandling a punt. And my wife and I were swaying in a downpour in Birmingham in the dated upper deck of Legion Field when a tornado passed by. We didn't mind so much because we won that one. Only the Nanny State has ruined such memorable events. In any of our stadia we are essentially inside a massive Faraday Cage where I don't think anyone had died of lightening in the post WWII era, if ever. So these whacko stoppages really ruin a weekend outing and spoil memories.

When I was in high school I played in an ice storm with freezing temp and on a field that was already miserable. In the 3rd quarter I blocked a punt and the damn ball hit me squarely on the chinstrap. It felt like the kicker had slung a cinderblock on a rope and dead centered my jaw. It was only the second time I had seen stars. What made it worse was that soaked and icy ball fell right under me not bouncing on that sloppy field so while I lay there dazed in that frozen slop I also wound up squashed under a mass of wet heavy players trying to recover the ball. My fun came in the 4th when their back was sandwiched and the ball popped out right into my arms and I got to slog for about 25 yards before finding another frozen puddle to fall in.

All in all it beat the hell out of a game we played in August on an afternoon on a hot dusty field in 101 degree heat and uncomfortable humidity. It's the only time our opponents ever met us after the game to commiserate.

The syndicated noon game in the NE meant something when all the independent teams played each other.
