Mark my word, with OL we have coming in he will kill it this Fall!!

And even though White had a string three years, and was really solid, he is not DeAngelo and is replaceable
Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t feel better if he came back
If Norvell was here I would be much less worried about the QB position.
Silverfield is still an unknown when it comes to developing a QB. We don't know what he can do and most aren't great at grooming QBs
Arizona actually lost to USC in the two years Gunnell was at QB. But, his stats were pretty impressive in the 2020 game. Here is a link. USC was ranked #20 at the time and Arizona lost 34-30.

I suppose we’ll see. We won 8 games last year with no running game… riding the back of a senior QB who could check us into the right offense and complete passes even when defenses dropped 8 & managed to pressure the QB. Our oline was dreadful… so it’s asking a lot of the new group and a new QB to maintain. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m just trying to be realistic & 6-6 seems fair.
We won with a bad offensive line, a quarterback with zero mobility, lost 3,800 of receiving yardage, and lost a lot of great players. We went 8-3 during what turned out to be a rebuilding year.
Nicholls
Arkansas State 4-7
MSU 4-7
UTSA
Temple 1-6
Tulsa 7-3
Navy 3-7
UCF 6-4
SMU 7-3 H
ECU 3-6
Houston 3-5
Tulane 6-6
Why would we be an underdog to anyone except possibly UCF and Tulsa? What have the other teams done to warrant thinking that half of them will beat us?
Also had a month off in the middle of the season with no games and very few practices.
I understand the sentiment. We rode white.
The question now becomes did Silvefield lead white or did White already know what he needed. If Silvefield can groom a good qb the we will be fine. Otherwise we are going to be relying on a defense that has struggled for a while.
IMO, even though he wasn't as accurate, wasn't as adept as going through his reads and finding his receivers, and obviously didn't have nearly the same stats as 2019; last year was White's best.
In 2019 he had one of the top offenses to work with in the entire NCAA. He had very good line play, often elite NCAA and occasional NFL level talent. Last year, the cupboard was bare as far as returning production is concerned.
Gunnell might be a work in progress, but he took his lumps as a freshman the same way that Lynch did as a freshman. To put things into context; with our bad line play last year, White was sacked 20 times in 420 attempts. In 2019, he also had 420 attempts and was sacked 27 times. Gunnell, who is much more mobile than White has been sacked 23 times in 248 attempts. I'm not saying that Gunnell is going to be as good as White, but I think he might turn out to be very good, given that he will have better players around him than he had at Arizona.
For his career he has completely 66.5% of his passes and has 15 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Also, this doesn't even take into account how good Parrish and Brown are. As the potentially "worst" option, Gunnell should be pretty awesome.
I’m usually pessimistic, but this team is stacked. I don’t think we will go undefeated, but this is one of the deepest Tiger teams I can recall. We have a tough schedule, but we will end up top 3 in the conference and will compete for the access bowl slot

He was getting zero time in the pocket against USC and still remained composed. You'd think he'd shred AAC defenses if we can pass block at all.

Yeah ... I'm sold. That was a "you got the job" video. Unless we can't pass block ...

I liked that he went through his progressions on more than a few of his attempts, including the first TD (I think it was the first one). And he seemed to move fairly well in the pocket at times - agree that he didn't have much time most of those sets.
Everyone seems to assume Gunnell is the QB but he didn't yet win the job. Understand he's the favorite but apparently there are two other QBs in contention. Whoever wins the job will be new to this system at least to work with the 1st team offense & see real game action at Memphis. It will probably take several games to become effective - just like it took White & Lynch before him. And Lynch & White had great receivers. I would just temper expectations until we see what the offense can do.
from that video... he needs a bit of work.
Several throws where he looked at the guy that he was throwing to too long.
The Arizona O line looked very porous. If he is the starter here... I think our guys can give him the time he needs to go through his progressions... or take off and run as needed.
3 Factors that nobody apparently wants to discuss when it comes to the 2020 team as opposed to this year's team.
1. Defense - we had 8 TOTAL practices prior to starting the season. NONE of which had a full offense practicing against a full defense. Then prior to the second game of the season, we had a 28 day layoff, in which the majority of that time players weren't even allowed in the athletic facilities, much less practicing. The defense improved greatly as the season went along, because we had time to actually install the defense. We've had a full offseason and return some great talent, as well as add some very impressive potential talent.
2. Offense - While we had the same OC, anybody that knows the program knows that Norvell called 99% of the plays and it was 100% his offense. Once again, even with Brady White, we installed a new offense in EIGHT practices. That new offense was centered around Gainwell and Coxie, who played in a combined total of TWO games. While we returned starters on the OL, it was a new blocking scheme with new assignments all installed... well, you get the point.
3. Schedule - We go from a C19 crazy schedule back to a normal schedule, with 100% fan participation at the Liberty Bowl. We actually had a Spring Camp. IF you were at Friday Night Lights, there is a lot to be excited about with this team, but the defense definitely looked improved. Fans - there was nothing as weird as the first game of the season with only 4,000 fans. It was much more surreal than the ECU game, I was there for that one too. One last point, not only do we have a normal schedule, we also get to drop Cincy in the regular season and replace them with ECU.
Even with all the negatives of last season, we were still in contention for the AAC Championship Game. We still had a solid offense and improving defense. We won our first bowl game in years. And yet fans think we are going to struggle to get to 6-6.... Give me a freakin' break!
Hello all, AZ fan here, I haven't posted in a very long time, too embarrassed due to the Pastner fiasco but decided to chime in on Gunnell a bit. He is going to be great for you in my opinion. He had pretty good numbers considering the complete lack of line depth and skill players. Our AD hired Sumlin which was a disaster not unlike your Tubby Smith experience and it cost us dearly. Sadly, we are starting over in football and basketball but maybe in a few years we could do a home and home with Memphis. Last time, it was a great two games. Right now, your teams are miles ahead of us. Anyway, I wish you guys great success in football and basketball, I root for Memphis (unless AZ plays you) We do play Tennessee in basketball this year so maybe we can pull off an upset for you. I know you guys can't stand TN.
He is proven as a good D1 quarterback. The only question is how high his ceiling is. We don't know because he was surrounded by crap players. I think he's going to be really really good.

Just like White before him----Gunnell would not be in MEMPHIS without assurance of the job

Reminds me of this thread and what some of us were saying there. I didn't like what I was seeing from the Penn St. game on, but I'm willing to be more forgiving with this added perspective.
