Meanwhile, Tom Billeter had a somewhat similar career track:

Quote: Augustana’s all-time winningest men’s basketball coach, national champion and two-time national coach of the year, Tom Billeter has set a national standard for achievement ... (and) directed the Vikings to eight NCAA Tournament appearances ...

I'd say those are VERY similar career tracks: Both former Rice coaches became the all-time winningist men's basketball coach at Augustana!

What I did NOT know, until now, is that one Augustana is in Rock Island, Ill., (Giavanine's: D-III Augustana College) and the other (Billeter's: D-II Augustana University, which was also named Augustana College until 2015) is in Sioux Falls, S. Dak.!!

Thanks for that -- I was a tad confused with the Augustana/Augustana thing there. Of course, it doesnt take much for me these days to be confused.....

With all of the Atlanta-area connected players we've recruited over the years, you'd think the coaches would schedule some actual games in that area at least once every four years. There are so many options (GaTech, GaState, Kennesaw State (also Owls), Univ GA, for starters and both cities' airports makes it an easy and quick trip. Hard to figure if they want to keep recruiting there.

Wow, can't believe elw never mentioned him this year. I'm sure he's following his old man (Adam Peakes) and is joining Rice as a walk-on. But his dad was on scholarship by his sophomore year and was all-conference by his senior year.

Very nice to see this. I think I've seen Jackson at games at Rice since he was a toddler.

Son of Adam Peakes ('95)? If so, cross post to the "Rice Kids" thread?

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
Decent pick up for a non-scholarship player. 20/10 player even if it's against very small and unathletic private school kids. Won't be as important this year because we've got a beefy roster, but getting decent walk-ons can actually be important sometimes. Much better doing scouting drills when you're up against guys that can play a bit.

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
New offer out to 2022 CG Devin Carney. 6-1 out of Pennsylvania, offers from URI and Duquesne among others. Probably profiles more as a scoring guard at the next level despite his size. Wouldn't call him super quick and wasn't always blowing by less athletic defenders in HS. But he's not slow and can shoot from five steps behind the arc, so I think he'd thrive in a P&R system which would max both his shooting and driving ability. I like his game, just like I've liked the games of a lot of our recent 2022 offers. We only have one 2022 scholarship left according to VC, but that number means very little these days. I'd imagine with standard roster turnover it'll be closer to 2-3 by the end of next year, but it could also be 5-6 if we struggle.

And as for our periodic Elijah Lawrence update, who is still showing as committed on every recruiting site and whose Twitter page still says he's committed to Rice (though it appears he doesn't use Twitter much), there remains nothing new. His presence remains shrouded in mystery.

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
Updates:

> Newish offer to Dom Campbell. 2022 big man out of Exeter Academy. Big body (not as big as Junior Lofton), but still looks relatively nimble and has good touch and can shoot it. He dominates a lot of his prep school opposition with his size, but size is translatable. His recruiting has blown up, though. Since we offered, he's also gotten offers from the likes of Notre Dame, Penn St, Virginia Tech, and Stanford
> Looks like 2022 G Ryan Duncan will be taking an unofficial visit next month. Don't think we've offered him. Interest from Harvard, Princeton, and a bunch of other Ivies. I can see why he's been talking to a bunch of teams but not a ton have offered. Good shooter and distributor, but doesn't quite look like a lead guard. But TBH, a lack athleticism and quickness have never driven Pera from a player. You're fine as long as you can lead an offense and pass
> Looks like we might get an official visit from 2022 Braeden Moore (along with Notre Dame and TCU). Classic late bloomer wing. Offers from a ton of power conference programs, already has visits planned at Wisconsin and Nebraska. About as pure of a shooting stroke as you'll find
> Looks like we're also still actively after 2022 PG Ben Shtolzberg, though we didn't make his first set of official visits (Northwestern, Creighton, Rutgers).*

*Edit: this probably isn't applicable anymore. An article just came out where he discussed a bunch of schools interested in him and Rice wasn't mentioned.

2022 forward Josh Reed will take an official visit to campus this weekend. Massive, massive target. Borderline 4* player, ranked top-100 by Rivals (#89). Has received offers in the last couple weeks from Clemson, Arkansas, Georgia, Northwestern, and Texas A&M. He's probably a dream signing for Pera. 6-7, can shoot it from way downtown, energetic on both ends, and has the ability to pass as a point forward. Will be extremely difficult to beat out the likes of Oklahoma State and other big dogs, but getting a top-100 recruit on campus this soon after the live period opens up is something the staff should be thrilled about.

Is he local? That would be our only shot at landing him.

Atlanta. We should really schedule GT this season.

Out of Georgia. He's publicly said that academics are important, so his recruitment will likely depend on the extent to which that's the case. And even then, there are Ivies + Northwestern on this tail. Like I said, it'll be a long shot. But this is probably the first top-100 guy we've gotten on campus in a while (Rhoades had a knack for identifying guys who would become top-100 guys, but I'm not sure he ever got them on campus after they blew up). Nothing to scoff at.

Think we did have one commit (signee?) but he ended up at Nevada due to academics. That’s one school that really shows what we’re up against when kids just want to play ball.

Right, good memory on Josh Hall. Though he dropped like a stone in the rankings. I was thinking more about guys like Kam McGusty, Wenyen Gabriel, Jase Febres, Savion Flagg, Mo Bamba, and Justin Smith. All eventual top-100 guys that Rhoades was pretty quick to offer - some even reciprocated interest - but who blew up before we ever really had a shot. But yeah, I think Hall was top-100 or thereabouts (maybe something like top-110).

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
Looks like 2022 F Xavier Amos out of Chicago will be visiting at some point. Doesn't have an offer, so might be an unofficial visit. Offer from Mount St. Mary's, interest from Tulsa, Elon, and others. Visiting us along with Loyola CHI and UIC, both of which also haven't offered. Haven't watched too many highlights. Looks like your classic energy forward. Chances are that when Loyola CHI is involved, the recruit probably profiles as a decent defender at the next level. Scouting reports are yet to mention his ability to shoot the 3 ball, so I'm guessing at this point he's an energy scorer in the paint who's working inside out to develop his shot.

RE: MBB Recruiting 2022
The only top 100's I can recall signing recently (or relatively recent) are Jason McKeith and Morris Almond. A couple were perhaps top 100 on one service or another (like Tamir Jackson) but weren't probably consensus top-100 kids. Foreign recruits of course won't show up on a top-100 list but guys like Arsalan Kazemi and Dylan Ennis would easily have been top 100 if they had been American.

I really don't think basketball top 100 lists are as accurate as other sports. Look at some of the recruits we have who were way better than expected (Marcus Evans, Trey Murphy from the recent past, but I'd say Quincy Olivari will absolutely fit that bill too) - if you were doing a retrospective top 100 list four years removed from high school, a number of Rice kids would be on that list. I trust Pera's recruiting eye as he's had very few missteps. I suspect he had a lot to do with identifying Evans and Murphy (and Peterson).

But yes, it's impressive a top 100 recruit is coming here on a visit.

Looks like we'll also get a visit from 2022 wing Nick Martinelli. 6-7 from Illinois. Shoots it very well (57%) from deep. Has some athleticism. Kinda hard to judge him from highlights because his competition looks pretty rough. Also visiting Valpo and Belmont, planning on visiting Drake and Elon. Belmont offering actually says something, because they offer basically nobody and their talent identification (at least for their system) is absurd.

Plays for Glenbrook South, where former Duke player and just-announced-today new Duke HC-in-waiting Jon Scheyer played. (The GS coach at the time was Dave Weber, brother of then-Illinois coach Bruce Weber, yet Illinois still couldn't land Scheyer. 03-banghead). Brother plays for Northwestern.

Scheyer has his work cut out for him. Not the coaching, obviously. The whole clearly paying players but somehow getting away with it for 30 years. Let's see how much of the dark arts he's learned from Coach K.

Thank you. This veneration of that guy makes me ill, when everyone even tangentially connected to college basketball knows what's been going on for decades (not to mention the crazy ways some of those players actually are accepted into Duke -and stay eligible).
