Didn't read too many of them on this list...but Denver has been sponsoring Division I hockey since the 40s and has 8 national championships (most recently 2017).

Would be nice for the other Colorado schools to get in there though and give them some local competition. Though they are already a member of one of the top 2 conferences in college hockey and get plenty of competition from there.

It does seem odd that UC-Boulder and Colorado St don’t sponsor ice hockey. I think the demographics are there—they just need the start up money.

That's the answer to every single question about "Why doesn't School X have hockey?" Money. The annual expenditure is seven figures, bare minimum, unless you are Division I in name only like LIU. Most schools want to have an endowment put together to guarantee the operating expenses will be covered for a period of time before they announce a team.

He's done similar lists on this topic before. One included Minnesota-Duluth just weeks after UMD lost the NCAA title game to Denver. https://csnbbs.com/post-14301462.html#pid14301462

David ignores the high costs of taking those club teams to varsity level. Most of the funding of these teams is raised by the players for rink rental, travel, and equipment. Some schools might hire a coach but coaching the team may not be his primary duties. Making the team varsity also means adding women's sport(s) basically doubling the costs due to Title 9. David, you can't just wave a magic wand to add a sport.

RE: The NoDak Memorial College Hockey Start-Up Rumors Thread
Robert Morris dropping hockey is more evidence that you need to have a LOT of money to operate a hockey program. For all the talk of expansion, in the past few year DI hockey has lost Alaska-Anchorage, Alabama-Huntsville, and Robert Morris.

The only gain has been LIU, who are funding their program less than many DIII schools. None of the schools who did feasibility studies started a program or found adding the sport feasible absent a massive, massive donation. Robert Morris had been the school that was thrown at me when I pointed out that every recent addition (bar LIU who are not a real DI team) has needed a massive, massive initial donation. And now RMU is gone.

The ccd rule of college hockey expansion remains in effect: if you have a rumor about a school starting hockey, point to either the $100M donation, or a $30M+ donation and a rink. Otherwise, it isn't happening.

I don't read "DavidSt." but I had to actually gag on this one.

I am a Metro State-Denver alum (Class of '94). It is literally inconceivable that Metro would EVER offer D1 Hockey.

Let me count the problems:
1) In the late '80's and '90's, Metro looked at going D1 so they could field a D1 Basketball team. The President of the (then) college was serious about it...until the BoT came down on him. Metro State was founded as an affordable, commuter, school that could service "non-traditional" and "under-served" populations in Colorado...adults, second-career students, etc. Actually they share a campus with UC-Denver and the Community College of Denver, which was meant to provide a "seamless" road for non-traditional students to get their Associate's (at CCD), Bachelor's (at MSCD/MSUD) and Post-Graduate degrees (as UC-D) in one campus experience, studying part-time, evenings, etc... Now the College has grown--it's a University now--but I have real trouble seeing them signing onto a massive capital expense that runs counter to their mission.

2) DU (University of Denver) and the Avalanche (NHL) have the market covered. In particular, the Av's play less than a mile off the Auraria Campus.

3) There are no facilities, and the Auraria Higher Education Campus (AHEC) isn't going to let MSUD have the space for a rink. Especially given that the University of Colorado Board of Regents has a say in the matter via UC-D.

4) Before you say, "Well, they can use the Pepsi Center..." Uh, that would be really expensive and working around between the Av's and the Nuggets would be extremely difficult. And the current MSUD gym is NOT suitable/capable of holding a rink.

I love Metro State. I often use #proudtobearoadunner as my tag. But no way in hell Metro will sponsor hockey.

UST already had hockey. They're just moving their program to DI along with the rest of their athletic department.

If I were Robert Morris, FCS football would be the sport I’d be dropping, not ice hockey.

As I said. U Colorado and the Colorado with a D-1 hockey program are two different entities.

Colorado College is supposed to be that local competition, but they've been a perennial cellar dweller since the NCHC formed. It's a shame, too. They have a very proud history in their own right.

USAFA is not a good program. I wouldn't call them competition for Denver. USAFA is more interested in beating Army. Navy needs to hurry up and start a program so we can get an honest CiC triangle in hockey.

UC-Boulder is more interested in supporting skiing and competing at a power conference level. Denver benefits from not having football and being a low major in Olympic sports. I don't think a school with CU's culture and budget can compete at hockey while trying to maintain at a P5 in major sports.

I'm not overly familiar with CSU, but I imagine they're more interested in trying to compete in the MWC and occasionally beat Colorado than fielding another sport to be mediocre at.

The cultures at CU and CSU are nothing like a hockey school. DU and CC are the exact schools you’d expect to be hockey-centric.

Exactly. I don't see many schools out west that hockey would be a good fit for. Arizona State still feels awkward and UNLV did even moreso before the athletic department shot down the idea.

I believe you, but do you have a link to the UNLV comment you mention? I think UNLV is only a matter of time. They will have great attendance, aided in part due to their location being a destination for northern fans, but more importantly there is potential for major donors with the casinos there. The engelstads who built und's arena are also major donors to the university and they have already donated nearly a million dollars to the club team. A handful of arena options are already in the area as well. Casinos could also potentially partner on new construction.
