Good stuff. I remember reading that article before the Ohio State game. I also remember Fick lamenting after the ass beating that he wasn't emotional enough with the team in preparation. He was too business-as-usual. Anywho, I think the other thing about BF is playing for and coaching at a program like Ohio State puts you in the mindset to expect success at a high clip including conference and national chips. That mindset and experience together with his love for recruiting Ohio high school talent and his integrity relationships with Ohio schools really makes for the perfect storm for the UC program. I hate to say it, we may never have the coaching planets align quite like they have under BF. That's why many of us keep saying...enjoy this ride while it lasts. It's been a helluva lot of fun for sure.
No doubt. Fick has at least shown the blueprint for how to be successful at UC. You have to get someone that has extremely deep ties to Ohio recruiting and will garner respect in almost any High School he walks into. Even with that said, it would be extremely difficult to replace him, but at least we know what type of coach will be successful here, even if it is a notch below where Fick has taken us. Hopefully we don’t have to worry about that any time soon, but like you said we should enjoy it because it could come to an end at any point.
For 6-10 years only worry about ND and OSU. Look staying in Cincy making $4 million a year, beautiful Indian Hill Estate, kids in quality Catholic Schools is a decent gig. I repeat PSU does not worry me, with one marginal Catholic school. Here his sons can pick from Moeller and St. X. The girls can select from Ursuline Academy, MND, Summit CD.
Perhaps LF pulls a Frank Beamer.
I think there is a chance, though I won’t set my expectations to that.
Imagine if Fick is here for 5 more years what we can accomplish. Possibly CFP expansion and potentially even moving to a P5 conference in that timeframe as well. The program would be in a tremendous position and still rising IMO. Once he stays that long, you then have to wonder if it makes sense to leave at all, especially depending on how the landscape changes in that time.

At that point it would be more like a Gary Patterson situation. I know Beamer had VT playing at the highest level but Patterson helped move TCU to a "P" league and stayed. Would love it if Coach Fickell were able and willing to do that.

Kyle Wittingham as well...it's not without precedent.

Don't know if anyone saw Mel Kiper's 2022 NFL draft rankings from last week, but he has Ahmad Gardner #24 overall. He also did top ten by position, with Cincinnati players as noted:
#5 QB - Des Ridder
#5 TE - Josh Whyle
#6 DE - Myjai Sanders
#4 CB - Ahmad Gardner
I think all 4 will be drafted in the first two rounds if they perform anywhere close to expectation for this season.

Yep...and I think a 5th may just find their way to the fringes depending upon production and testing at the combine.

I gorsh dern guarantee you that if Rid has the kind of year that many of us expect then he will be a first round pick. 5 QB's were taken this year and the NFL is a QB premium league.

Nah, I think he's going to get his degree...just seems like that kind of kid. I'm thinking Beavers or Ford could make a jump. Ford is going to have A TON of touches this year.

Is anyone else not drinking the Gus Malzahn kool-aid? I think he'll struggle more than most are prediciting in Year One. We've yet to see a former P5 coach do that well long term in the AAC. It's been young up and comers that have found success to move on to the P5, and not the other way around.

I'm buying it. He's out recruiting his tail off. That's the biggest thing I've noticed. When guys take a step back, they seem to lose their motivation. It's almost like he kicked it into another gear.

I want them to do well, because that benefits UC and the conference as a whole. I would love to see UC, UCF and a 3rd team constantly being ranked in the top 25 every preseason.
For the conference to get more respect, they need more teams to do better AND to beat more P5 teams. I really hope UCF beats Boise and Louisville and sets up a nice 5-0 showdown vs UC. I'm rooting hard for all AAC teams to do well in their non conference schedule-- it means more than ever for the Bearcats this year if UC can run the table.

I'm probably biased because of my wife - Auburn grad - but he didn't impress me overall there. At the risk of hijacking the thread I'll just say that he was meh after his first 12-2 season losing in the BCS chip to FSU. He finished 68-35 [.660] overall and only won 2 bowl games [Birmingham and Music City] out of 7 [lost the BCS Chip, Sugar, Peach and Outback x2]. He never could develop consistent, high performances from his QB recruits, and was often criticized for his coaching and lack of adjustments to his offense's scheme. I want UCF to do well for our conference but I don't think they got the right guy at the helm based on history.

This is what I have noticed. They are bringing in some top tier players and I expect it’s going to help them climb back up.
I also agree with the poster that said they are rooting for them. Since I don’t buy that a P5 lifesaver is coming, I hope the AAC continues to improve and a very good UCF will help make that a reality.
