Cool 2021 men's soccer thread
I'm sure after an initial flareup this thread will be dormant until the season begins (and maybe after too, who knows), but since we're all still feeling the buzz of Marshall's title run, two things:

1. ODU was 1-4-3 in the season that just concluded, but they did come away with a draw at Marshall.
2. Not sure how Coastal joining the league affects scheduling but ODU should be hosting the Herd this fall, which, if my dodgy internet research skills are correct, would make them the first defending national champion in any sport to play ODU on the road since Virginia baseball in 2016 at Harbor Park. Last national champ to play the Monarchs on their campus appears to be 2011 Maryland field hockey? And ODU has hosted a national champion in soccer, 2006 against Maryland.

Sure hope the men's team enjoys a nice rebound this year. i think we have gotten spoiled with many years of really successful teams. I had no idea Marshall won the Championship.

RE: 2021 men's soccer thread
This year’s team was really young with 12 freshman and 7 sophomores on the roster (total is 22). I was expecting them to take a big step forward next season but the newest roster announcement has 9 new players listed. That’s a lot of roster turnover, especially when you consider they only had 1 senior, 1 redshirt junior and 1 third-year junior.

I’m not sure what the story is there and to be honest, I’m not sure if this is normal in soccer as its’ not something I usually track. I guess I should start an excel doc and see how much of the soccer roster has changed each season regardless of what class they’re in. It could be perfectly normal or it could be an anomaly based on covid and this unsuccessful season.

Could be exploiting the waiver allowing college athletes an extra year of eligibility because of COVID. I know a college soccer coach who told me recently that they didn't expect a lot of transfer-portal activity unless it's from athletes who sat out this season because there's not much time to get your crap in order, with the first game of the new season in three months. Or it could actually be a housecleaning.

FWIW, at least on paper, the Monarchs didn't seem terrible despite their record, with a draw at Marshall and an OT loss at Kentucky. So who knows.

That’s not how that waiver works. The senior and juniors will remain at that 20/21 class level (as will the underclassmen). And the senior can come back without counting towards the 22 man limit. But you can’t add freshman without roster spots opening up. That tells me at least 6 of the underclassmen aren’t expected back.

Then I misunderstand how it works. I was under the impression that at least for 2021-22, they could in essence carry five classes (though lack of scholarship money and opportunities to play would still lead to athletes not coming back).

You’re correct, they could carry five classes. However, if you look at each roster, the limit would basically consist of the last four classes. So we should have 22 guys that aren’t seniors coming back for a second senior year.

If we added nine without any roster turnover for the underclassmen, we’d be well over 22.

#3 and 3 seed Indiana 0 #10 and unseeded Marshall 1 -- Jamil Roberts Golden Goal 98:41 of the first OT

Marshall's March To The National Title
#23 Fordham- Undefeated coming into the NCAAs -- Marshall 2-1 in OT, Golden Goal by Milo Yosef at the 96:41 mark of the first OT
#1 and 1 seed Clemson- The top ranked team in the nation at 14-2-3 -- Marshall 1 Clemson 1 after 2 OT -- Marshall advances on PKs 7-6
#7 and 8 seed Georgetown- Georgetown was the Defending National Champions -- Marshall 1-0, Goal by Jamil Roberts at the 20:05 mark in the 2nd period
#16 and unseeded North Carolina- UNC had made the College Cup semis the last 3 of 4 years -- Marshall 1-0, Goal by Jamil Roberts at the 30:22 mark in the 2nd period
#3 and 3 seed Indiana- Indiana has the most NCAA wins with 95 and 2nd most titles with 8 -- Marshall 1-0, Golden Goal by Jamil Roberts at the 98:41 mark of the first OT

Marshall had to go through some college soccer royalty:
Clemson - 2 time National Champions (32 NCAAs, Titles 1984, 1987)
Georgetown - 1 National Champions (10 NCAAs, Defending National Champs, Title 2019)
North Carolina - 2 time National Champions (26 NCAAs, College Cup Simis 3 of the last 4 years, Title 2001, 2011)
Indiana - 8 time National Champions (44 NCAAs, 21 College Cup semis, 16 College Cup Finals, Titles 1982, 1983, 1988, 1998, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2012)

In my opinion Marshall has the best DI head coach in the nation. That just isn't me as a fan trying to blow smoke either.

The Grassie Coaching File
University of Charleston HC for 6 years
WVIAC/MEC Coach of the Year 4 times
99-20-8 Record
6 WVIAC/MEC Titles
1 Sweet 16
2 Elite 8
1 Final 4
2 Title Games
2 National COTY awards

Marshall University (4th year)
CUSA Coach of the Year 2 times
46-24-11 (30-5-6 in the last 2 years)
2 CUSA Ttiles
20 Ranked Wins (Beat #1 Clemson on PKs)
2 NCAAs
1 Sweet 16
1 College Cup National Championship
15 straight weeks in the Top 25 (Currently #10, Highest Rank #8)(After the College Cup Ranked #1 in the United Coaches and TopDrawer Poll)

Coach Grassie has a combined record at UC and Marshall of 145-44-19.

The boneheaded turnover that gave ODU a tie with Marshall was because of midfielder Max Schneider, he redeemed himself in the Sweet 16 against Clemson.

How long do you think your coach will stay around? I mean the 5 year contract is a nice start, but P5 will payout any buyout needed if they really want him.

I have it from a pretty good source that Coach Dawson actually turned down overtures from Duke to stay at ODU. So you never know. And frankly, year over year, I’d rate Dawson as one of the best in the country too.

In my opinion Marshall has the best DI head coach in the nation. That just isn't me as a fan trying to blow smoke either.

The Grassie Coaching File
University of Charleston HC for 6 years
WVIAC/MEC Coach of the Year 4 times
99-20-8 Record
6 WVIAC/MEC Titles
1 Sweet 16
2 Elite 8
1 Final 4
2 Title Games
2 National COTY awards

Marshall University (4th year)
CUSA Coach of the Year 2 times
46-24-11 (30-5-6 in the last 2 years)
2 CUSA Ttiles
20 Ranked Wins (Beat #1 Clemson on PKs)
2 NCAAs
1 Sweet 16
1 College Cup National Championship
15 straight weeks in the Top 25 (Currently #10, Highest Rank #8)(After the College Cup Ranked #1 in the United Coaches and TopDrawer Poll)

Coach Grassie has a combined record at UC and Marshall of 145-44-19.

The boneheaded turnover that gave ODU a tie with Marshall was because of midfielder Max Schneider, he redeemed himself in the Sweet 16 against Clemson.

Max Schneider Wonder Goal

How long do you think your coach will stay around? I mean the 5 year contract is a nice start, but P5 will payout any buyout needed if they really want him.

I have it from a pretty good source that Coach Dawson actually turned down overtures from Duke to stay at ODU. So you never know. And frankly, year over year, I’d rate Dawson as one of the best in the country too.

I wouldn’t rate Dawson as one of the best in the country, he has fallen off over the last 5 years or so..... His last 5 years (not putting anything into this season), 41-36-10 (without Covid season 38-25-9).

Besides he doesn’t have any bargaining chips. Trust me the Board of Regents isn’t going to call an emergency meeting to approve a half a million dollar contract for him like Marshall did.

Agreed. No disrespect intended on what he has done for the program during his tenure, but the team over the last 5+ seasons is a shell of its former self.

RE: 2021 men's soccer thread
Dawson has been a good coach at ODU. I was surprised we were able to get a draw at Marshall. We were on our heals the whole game but the defense held on vs a very good team. I guess my biggest disappointment, is the lack of a deep run in the College Cup. In the early 2000's we were ranked every year and just couldn't get a run, seem to exit early each year. Since joining CUSA in 2013, we have won championship twice. That's more than any other school during that time. But we haven't made it past the second round since 2007 in the NCAAs.

Coach Grassie has been in the US since he was 17 (He is 42 now) and has worked/coached in the state of WV all but 4 years. He spent 2007-2011 as an asst. at Michigan.

This isn't college football or basketball where the P5 pay their coaches ungodly amounts of money and where even the lowest man on the totem pole in a P5 conference can take your coach. Coach Mike Noonan at Clemson makes 303K (188k before new contract last year), Jeremy Gunn at Stanford 267K, Todd Yeagley at Indiana 317K. Then you have coaches that pay more than the avg like Kentcky;s Coach Johan Cedergren 107K, Charlotte's Kevin Langan at 99K and SMU's Kevin Hart at 87K.

The avg salary for a DI soccer coach is just under 50K. There are 205 men's soccer programs in DI. And roughly 180 pay under 50K. That means only 25 programs pay more.

Before the NCAA Tounament Coach Grassie would have been the 3rd highest paid coach even in the ACC at 122K. And now after the new contract he is the highest paid DI men's soccer coach in the nation at 375,750 per year.

1,878,750 for 5 years or 375,750

He and his wife love the area, she works at Marshall also. My guess is Coach Grassie is at Marshall as long as he wants to be.

Does Grassie's deal change the calculus for other schools? I have a buddy who's a mid-D1 assistant and he thinks if that a few other schools step up to Grassie's mark with their own coaches or coaching hires, then a rising tide my lift his boat (definitely not one of the 25 that pay above the average).

I don't have a clue. I know before Coach Grassie. Really before Mike Hamrick (Marshall AD) arrived in Huntington, Marshall could have cared less about soccer, it was an after thought, a program that had to be there.

In 2003 men's soccer at Marshall was about 24 hours from being cut, The program was like the red phone going at a condemned man's execution. The AD at the time Bob Marcum had to cut a men's program to be Title IX compliant. And men's soccer was on the chopping block. Some how anonymously (Asst. AD at the time, former Marshall soccer player) tipped off the Huntington Herald-Dispatch, Charleston Daily Mail and Charleston Gazette. And the day he was to cut the program all 3 papers had blown the whistle on what was getting ready to happen. The next 2 weeks all three papers were inundated with phone calls from the Huntington community, Huntington schools and the Huntington soccer community. Truth is the soccer program should have been in the discussion, from 1979-2002 they had exactly 9 winning seasons. After about a month the AD had enough pressure that he couldn't cut soccer. Eventually men's track and field was cut.

Before 2013 Marshall played soccer on a field pushed up against Joan C Edwards stadium that may have had 100 temp seats. In the spring of 2011 Mike Hamrick unveiled a plan to build an 8.3 million dollar soccer complex that was part of the capital campaign for new facilities that included the Indoor Practice Facility, Sports Medicine, Academic Center and Hall of Fame. A lot of people was really skeptical and didn't understand why this money wasn't just going into football or basketball. Mike Hamrick took a gamble 10 years ago, the stadium opened in 2013 and in 8 years had produced a National Championship.

In case you haven't seen it on the CUSA board, West Virginia is joining for men's soccer starting in 2022.
