Baseball field idea
ImageUploadedByCSNbbs1482462319.908141.jpg (Size: 64.97 KB / Downloads: 63)
With master plan bringing baseball back on campus, this idea occurred to me. I have layered an image of Kent St field on the land adjacent to the indoor facility
My thought the computer facility could move to other space on campus and that building could be repurposed for locker room and indoor training space
Or demo it and spot the softball field there. Did not check that for size
Thought there would be advantages having it closer to indoor building than the Carter Hall site

RE: Baseball field idea
Per Baseball Rule 1.04 states: "It is desirable that the line from home base through the pitchers plate to second base shall run East Northeast."
Your proposal pretty much (within a few degrees) follows this rule. I'd suggest you send this to Jon Hoffman and the Master Plan Committee.
BTW... the University Computer Center just went through some pretty extensive infrastructure upgrades. I don't think it's going anywhere soon.

RE: Baseball field idea
Worth looking into. Think that would be one looking for a specific donor. Demo or repurpose an usable building. It maybe one of those, if we could pick-up and rearrange everything kind of deals, nice in concept but...
If I were to do the same? I'd first want to know where I was putting computer services. "Unfortunately" a lot of the service building (along Dorr) are small, three-four separate with plant, transportation... if I recall, when one bigger building with bays might better serve. Then there'd be a place for IT.
Sooner hopefully, rather than later, expanding the rec center should be considered, which would use that land where IT is now either for that expansion of additional parking. Rec Center is way behind what is being offered at even comparable and done right, it can generate revenue from external sources. THe other direction to go with it, would be to create a mega complex with the ROTC, then on to Savage, which could make for a very interesting in-door ropes and running course through that still wooded valley separating everything.
Solving that softball/baseball problem is going to take some ingenuity. Yours might be a workable. I agree, be sure to pass on the idea. Though I imagine they like their isolation from the masses, that's always been a clunky area for IT. Bad enough they need two separate ones, one for each campus.

RE: Baseball field idea
Putting baseball and softball in Carter Hall's footprint make the most sense, especially if they do something new with the intramural field and do something with the routing of that stretch of Rocket Drive between Carter and the field.

The proposed idea was to demolish Carter Hall and have baseball and softball back-to-back also using about half of Carter Field. This was proposed in the 5 to 10 year range.
One of the reasons for the move to main campus was poor attendance at games. The people making these suggestions have not been around UT long enough to understand the realities of softball and baseball attendance. When the baseball field was where the Rec Center is, students could walk out the front door of Carter Hall and be at the field in two minutes. Attendance was usually 150 or less. Softball, which went to the College World Series, might get 75.

RE: Baseball field idea
Attendance might be poor reasoning that drove a good decision. Quality of life medicines and therapy and management of those businesses are the next huge thing. Actually the present huge thing. Advances in these area (as I think it) are driven by two things, sports and injured vets but paid for by well sports and those that can afford it.
Back in the day, you couldn't hold a cocktail and be "in-group" if you couldn't take about your nose job. Then it became arthroscopy. Now if you have both your own hips, you don't belong, lol. Eh, could be the crowd I hang around.
Researchers and student need to see body mechanics in order to understand and recreate it. Proximating (it's a word now, because I used it) College and recreational sports and Engineering is foresight IMO.

As stated previously, the proposal in the master plan does not meet Baseball Rule 1.04 states: "It is desirable that the line from home base through the pitchers plate to second base shall run East Northeast." for the softball facility.
No facility should be constructed that does not meet guidelines that will allow it to host conference championships and the like

RE: Baseball field idea
Hosting tournaments and championships on campus is a big deal in my opinion. We're lucky to have a great facility like 5th-3rd but campus facilities are more likely to grow sports at lower local levels. Personally, I'd put MY money into track. We're poorly lacking in that area. At one time, 50s-60s we were one of the go to places in the states in sprints. Now, nothing. Getting back to the basics of competition that track provides is the one sport that might pull kids away from their electronics and pay more attention to their health. It's also key, in MY opinion, to improving girl's and women's participation. This is where there is more bang for the buck in way of advancing human condition, learning human capabilities and healing.

That's why instead of thinking of Carter and the field as two separate parcels, they should be part of the same. The only thing that isn't flexible in that area is the railroad line. Rocket Drive on that side of campus has been re-routed in the past and can easily be re-routed again since the only things around it in that area are grass, parking lots, and a soon-to-be-demolished building.

I agree. Need to figure out how to fix the mess they have now. Program is terrible and no sign of improvement

Sadly the Rec Centre pool will never host a MAC Championship or NCAA qualifying event:
For facilities it is preferred that the racing course be 50 meters, [164 ft. .50 in.] in length by 75 feet [22.86 m] in width, providing for eight, 9-foot [2.74 m] lanes with additional width outside lanes one and eight. A minimum water depth of 7 feet [2.13 m] is desirable for optimal competitive conditions.

Yeah and when it was built that was one of the selling points. How did we screw that up

Actually, NCAA swimming is done in yards. UT has a short course 25 yard pool which is normal for college races.

Same way Savage was supposed to be larger to host NCAA Regional BB.

I can check, but has not been any recent news as to plans and funding for new baseball field on main campus as per master plan. Perhaps will be (or is) target of fund raising efforts of UT Athletics or become priority of new AD?

It's an odd game compared to football and basketball, which are almost constant action that takes the attention. Baseball, you're at a park where you sit and talk and bond. 5th/3rd is successful because it recognizes that. It has shade and sun. It has overlooks. It has variety. I think that can be replicated on the cheap. It would be easier if it were integrated into a dorm, where food service/ restrooms.. could be shared for events.

Not sure what's happening with fundraising at UT. When Jacobs was president, UT was supposed to be in a capital campaign. Seems like it vanished. I really don't know what's happening with the "current" campaign. Good luck trying to find any information on UT's website. I once had a university fundraiser tell me that you always had to be in a capital campaign or planning for one.
Meanwhile at BG, they recently finished a $250 million campaign and within the last 30 days received a separate $54 million individual gift.
