RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
MAC Transfer Update:

Thomas Binelli - Transferring from Eastern Michigan - Undecided on transfer destination - 6’10” - PF - 2* recruit from Bergen Catholic HS (Oradell, NJ - born in Bologna, Italy) - Binelli played two seasons at Monroe College (JUCO - New York, NY) before transferring to Eastern Michigan where he played in 1 season playing in 25 games (15 starts) averaging 24.2 minutes and 8.6 ppg/3.1 rpg shooting 31.6% from the field (31.3% 3PT - 57 of 182) and 77.4% FT (24 of 31). Binelli is a big dude who can shoot at a decent clip from the outside and logged a good amount of minutes for the Eagles this past season so losing him is going to be a big deal to them. But, I suppose he wants to play his last season in a more stable environment. That or Coach Heath told him he wasn’t interested. Coming out of HS, Binelli received no offers but coming out of JUCO, he received additional offers from Saint Leo (D-II - St. Leo, FL) and Bryant.

Is there anyone left on scholarship at EMU? Coach Heath has a lot of work to get done.

Didn't EMU have a mass exodus last year also?

Interestring question. To the best of my googling and whatnot, I think EMU has 3 players returning.

Bryce McBride
Derek Ballard, Jr.
Andrew Wells (Walk-on)

They have two transfers coming in.

Kevin-David Rice
Colin Golston, Jr.

And they currently have one incoming freshman committed.

Luka Savićević

So...yeah. They have 8 players (7 scholarship) currently.

I suppose both James Love III and Axel Okongo could return as I'm pretty sure NCAA is granting everyone one more year of eligibility and as 2020-21 seniors, I assume they both qualify for that. But I honestly don't know if they are coming back.

Thanks BR! I sure hope that Coach Heath doesn't swoop down and grab John Tenerowicz from our grasp.

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
NIU Future Recruiting Update:

Class of 2022 - HS Juniors

Tavari Johnson - UNCOMMITTED - HS Junior (2022) - 6’0” - PG - 2* recruit from Lyons Township HS (LaGrange, IL) - Okay, first of all, this kid has a twin brother. How funny would it be if Coach Burno just started targeting twin sets and started it all off with the Johnson and Rubin brothers? Well, unfortunately, Coach hasn’t made an offer to Javari Johnson, but he has made an offer to Tavari Johnson. With that said, I think Tavari is the better player. I don’t know this for certain but a lack of info on Javari leads me to believe this...although, they still have a year left at Lyons so it’s possible he breaks out. Anyway, Tavari is a prototypical 6’0” (I’ve seen him listed at 6’1” and I may be inclined to think he might actually be closer to 6’1” based on some video I’ve seen of him) who is slick with the pass and has a nose for scoring. So...one of those. A modern day point guard, if you will. He’s a bit unorthodox in going to the rim in such a way as he’s just unpredictable. He’s not ridiculously athletic but he’s kind of crafty both passing the ball, dribbling and shooting. He also looks to have a better than decent outside shot. Currently, Johnson has received one additional offer from Cleveland State.

Mohamed Toure - UNCOMMITTED - HS Junior (2022) - 6’6” - SF - 2* recruit from The Hun School of Princeton (Princeton, NJ - born in Silver Spring, MD) - Most of the video I’ve been able to uncover is about a year old from when “Mo” was a sophomore. He’s about 6’5”/6” and is long and quite athletic. Long arms. Long legs. Good jumping ability and runs really well. He showed a decent outside game but he holds the ball too low. I’m not worried about it as I was watching a sophomore and I have to have faith any coach with any smarts is going to get that up as he matures (and it very well could have already happened). I do see this kid sticking at SF if he doesn’t grow, but that could very well happen and if he puts about 3 more inches on...well, let’s say he’d probably be getting better offers than NIU. But...who knows. As a post player, he’d be real interesting but again, he’d have to grow a few more inches. Currently, Toure has offers from Navy and Army. It’s offers like these that make me scratch my head. One would think this kid has aspirations to being an officer in the military and, if that’s the case (and I see no reason why it wouldn’t be) then NIU has no shot. Then again, clearly Coach Burno felt it necessary to make this kid an offer so I have to believe HE believes this kid can be had. It also tells me this kid is a scholar and I’ve been noticing this may be a trend with Burno. Noah Kon appears to be a smart kid who has academic strengths and a number of other kids he’s made offers to kind of fit the same mold as Kon and Toure. It’d be interesting to see if Burno can build a roster out of really athletic academic all-stars.

NIU Future Recruiting Update:

Class of 2022 - HS Junior

Devin Carney - HS Junior (2022) - UNCOMMITTED - 6’1” - SG - 2* recruit from Butler Area Senior HS (Butler, PA - born in Sewickley, PA) - Carney is a SG through and through. Actually, I kind of see a lot of Trendon Hankerson in him but probably not quite as good running the point. But Hankerson shoots so well from the outside so this is where I think I’m seeing it. They’re also similar in size. If I had to guess, Carney is a bit more able to go to the rim but he’s got a really good shot from the outside as well. I’d love it if he grew about 2 more inches but it’s probably not necessary and he looks like his body is pretty mature and muscular so he very well could be done growing. Carney looks like a great compliment to some of the PGs we’ve got offers out to who are more of the slasher variety. Carney isn’t overly athletic but he can score. He put up 30 points per game as a junior. Currently, Carney has additional offers from Toledo, Holy Cross, George Mason, Duquesne, Robert Morris, Bryant, and St. Francis (PA).

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
MAC Transfer Update:

Jason Whitens - Transferring from Western Michigan - Undecided on transfer destination - RS Junior - 6’4” - SG - 2* recruit from North Central Area Junior/Senior HS (Spaulding, MI - born in Powers, MI) - Whitens has spent 3 seasons at Western Michigan. Last season he played in 19 games (18 starts) averaging 23.4 minutes and 5.4 ppg/3.5 rpg shooting 47.2% from the field (11.8% 3PT - 2 of 17) and 88.9% FT (16 of 18). Other than being a really good free throw shooter, Whitens doesn’t really bring much to the team other than experience. But, he’s been a starter, so that’s cool. Coming out of HS, Whitens received additional offers from Lake Superior State (D-II - Sault Ste. Marie, MI) and North Dakota State (D-II).

Apparently he is on a personal mission to redefine the concept of the one and done player in college hoops.

I think I always heard he was a really good student so I hope his academics are in order. I can't imagine trying to transfer schools 3 times and have all the credits transfer and work out. Seems like a hell of a headache.

Did Ritchie go from NIU to Triton or vice versa? I do remember a transfer from Triton a couple of years ago.

Dante Thorpe was a JUCO all American from Triton who was NIU’s best all round player, offensively and defensively, from 2017-2019. How quickly we forget.

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
MAC Transfer Update:

Braden Burke - Transferring from Central Michigan - Undecided on transfer destination - RS Senior - 7’0” - C - 2* recruit from Lakeshore HS (St. Clair Shores, MI - born in Stevensville, MI) - Burke started his career at Robert Morris where he actually played a lot as a true freshman but he chose to transfer to Michigan State where he was on the team for 2 seasons before transferring to Central Michigan last year. The move to Michigan State is curious and something I think many of us are examining right now. On one hand, the kid was probably always an MSU fan and dreamed of being a Spartan. So, you can’t really blame him for that. But he rarely played. He left a situation where he was clearly going to be a starter and prominent player to being practice fodder and one of the last guys on the bench. Maybe his move to Central Michigan was a last ditch effort to stick close to home but regain that playing time he left at Robert Morris? Alas, that didn’t happen either as he only played in 4 games (0 starts) while averaging 7.3 minutes and 1 ppg shooting 33.3% from the field and didn’t even shoot any free throws. Last year was weird, as we all know. So, his playing time might have really been negatively impacted by COVID. But even in the games he played in...he barely played. And didn’t play particularly well. And for a 7 footer who spent two seasons at MSU, I have to assume many associated with CMU basketball had higher expectations. Coming out of HS, Burke received additional offers from Youngstown State, Appalachian State, Oakland, and Stetson.

MAC Transfer Update:

Monty Scott - Transferring from Portland State to Eastern Michigan - RS Senior - 6’5” - SG - 2* recruit from St. Benedict’s Prep School (Newark, NJ - born in Union, NJ) - Scott has made the rounds. He started his collegiate career at Kennesaw State where he played two seasons and then transferred to Temple for a season before finally transferring to Portland State where he played in 22 games (20 starts) averaging 28.9 minutes and 13.7 ppg/5 rpg shooting 37.6% from the field (31.1% 3PT - 28 of 90) and 63.4% FT (64 of 101). I have to say, this is a good pickup for Coach Heath. Scott only has one year of eligibility but he brings experience and and ability to score to a team that is desperately needing something...anything...to help bridge the gap to the future and Scott should definitely do that and lend some veteran leadership. The Eagles probably won’t be any good next year but that doesn’t mean a guy like Scott won’t be valuable to them. Coming out of HS, Scott received offers from Loyola Marymount, Rider, Delaware, East Carolina, Fairfield, Drexel, Manhattan, FGCU, La Salle, Vermont, St. Bonaventure, and Fairleigh Dickinson.

When did the urban legend start that NIU has a top 10 accounting program? I could not find a single ranking that had us in the top 25.
