Please describe the "substantial" investment St. Thomas has already made in hockey, because they currently play at a generic HS arena, located about 10-15 min away from their own campus, on the property of a HS that they share the rink with. They do not have anything close to D1 facilities, and if used as a practice facility in Minnesta, a rink that far off campus is unacceptable. Most high schools in MN have a better setup than St. Thomas currently does - that doesnt equate to significant investment.
The answer is that St. Thomas is woefully underprepared and underresourced to be a legitimate, fully funded Division I program.
Also, I see that the goalposts have been moved from the initial post in this thread, which was about starting any D1 hockey team.

St. Thomas is sui generis. They are "starting" a D-I hockey team because the rest of their athletic department was moved to D-I.

Southern California
Nevada Las Vegas
Arizona St
Alaska Fairbanks
Alaska Anchorage
Plus 1 more for a Pacific conference.
Illinois to the Big 10
Liberty & Huntsville is already 2 for a Southern conference. Need 4 more.

The reality is that St. Thomas will do just fine, because unlike basketball, there is tons of parity right now in college hockey and there is plenty of talent to go around.

It certainly is the case that there is a willingness to play word games, since when the focus is on how much it costs a D1 program to start up a hockey team, that is not the same question as how much it will cost to upgrade a hockey team from D3 to D1 when a D3 athletics program is so strong that it is granted a waiver to jump directly from D3 to D1.
Whatever St. Thomas ends up investing, and whether that proves adequate or inadequate to being competitive in the new CCHA, part of what Arizona State decided they would have to spend $30m to build up has already been done by St. Thomas.

Lindenwood is telling recruits they'll have a D1 men's team by 2022.

Apart from that, some guy on the USCHO board is keeping a list with percentages, and he seems to think the only other programs likely to move up are Illinois and Navy.

Forgive the West Texas outlet for not understanding the difference between ACHA club hockey and NCAA membership. That is a misunderstanding by the recruit and/or outlet.
As a Liberty alum, I know the ACHA world better than I probably would prefer or require. My alma mater fields teams at all levels of ACHA on both men & women sides. But Club and NCAA are completely different beasts.

Yeah - I read that as they are moving to ACHA Division I

Liberty is just a matter of time. I mean you did beat a LIU this year haha. You guys have a better setup than most teams in Atlantic Hockey.

Yeah, I misread. Them saying "Plays in the American College Hockey Association at the NCAA Division II level" is pretty misleading. I thought they were playing down at D3 and tourney ineligible or something, since I don't pay much attention to D3 hockey. Lindenwood has been flirting with men's D1 for quite a few years, though.
Wichita Falls is NAHL and that league sends players to the NCAAs as well as the ACHA. They should know better.

Hell, Liberty has better facilities than a few Hockey East schools.

Lindenwood's announcement is expected this summer for a 2022-23 start: https://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2...Summer.php
I agree wholeheartedly with the lede from the article:
Quote:If you had a nickle for every time a school was rumored to be "looking into" starting a D-I men's ice hockey program, you'd be fairly wealthy. Most of the time, it's the wishful thinking of the fans or club team on campus. Other times, schools themselves — most recently Tennessee State — do "feasibility studies," which are often exercises in just finding out what everyone already knows — you need a lot money. Actually, you'd be fairly well off if you just collected nickles from the Lindenwood rumors over the last 15 years.
Seems like it is finally time for Lindenwood- they have a former NHL player coaching the club team and are getting commitments from recruits on the premise of joining the NCAA in 2022. The Blues' new practice facility was key- Lindenwood is trying to raise $15M to sustain the program for five years, instead of $70M when they thought they needed an arena. The AD is talking like it is a done deal, but they have some funds left to raise.

Double posting because news also has dropped on UConn's new arena: 2,600 seats for $70M. The arena will be on campus and was a condition when joining Hockey East. The league waived its 4,000 seat minimum. Opening date scheduled for 2022.

I’d love to have another Big Ten school or two sponsoring hockey—I’m not sure it’s a priority right now.

I think Illinois still has hockey plans. They were going to announce it last year until the pandemic hit. Once the financial situation gets more normalized, I think it will come back since the proposed hockey arena is also combined with a new arena and facilities for volleyball, gymnastics and wrestling (which have all been badly needed for years). So, the adding of hockey is critical for the long-term broader plans for multiple sports (as hockey is the "star" that's attracting the money for the larger facility). If this were a pure hockey-only facility, then I'd have a lot less confidence.
