AAC Revisited
Interesting thread on AAC conference board. Aresco quoted as saying AAC will be interested in having 12 and eventually 14 all sports teams. He specifically states he wants schools that are good in both football and basketball. This led me to think, what if Seligs strategy is to hold onto Jones, knowing he'll always get winning teams. Not necessarilly spectatcular, but certainly consistent and stable. Firing Jones would put him in the position off having 2 unknown commodities in our 2 major sports, not very attractive to possible suitors.
That takes care of half the equation. Now if Rahne can produce we could be right back in the conversation. Thoughts?

I don't think the current coaches play that big of a role in another conference finding us attractive. In fact thats probably the one thing thats most likely to change.

RE: AAC Revisited
According to their posters they wouldn’t be interested in us regardless. It’s Air Force, Army, BYU, and a couple of MWC teams or bust. The only chance we have is if the AAC gets ravaged through P5 expansion. Then depending on which programs are left, you have to weigh the pros and cons of making the jump... that is if they still want us. I think they would like to cripple the MWC and try to lock down the Access bowl every year if I’m reading their posts correctly.

I wouldn't put much stock in what folks on message boards have to say about long-term expansion candidates. 10 years ago ODU barely had football and us moving to FBS, hosting VT and beating them all seemed like they wouldn't happen for a long time. Fans' memory is pretty short when it comes to stuff like this. If ODU can string together a few really strong seasons and have a few big upsets then we'll be considered a good candidate for expansion by fans.

RE: AAC Revisited
I would think UAB, UMass and Buffalo would be two good adds to consider as well. We are perfect for them if our sports teams can compete. Basketball would need to improve, but wouldnt be at the bottom of the AAC right now. Give us their money and TV package and with a new coach we would probably be a top half team. Football would be tough, but then again we could certainly improve simply by being in the AAC. Look at Temple. All that to say, ODU certainly has the potential to be a great addition to the AAC. The problem is we aren't close to living up to our potential at the worst possible time.

I just don't see why a move to The American would be terribly attractive to the majority of Mountain West schools. They have a reasonably compact conference, as compact as you can in the western US, a good TV package that pays each school about $4 million a year, and it is pretty competitive. They have the added benefit of the conference tournament in Las Vegas. Yes, The American has a higher profile and pays a bit more but they are going to give up sensible start times for their geographic locations and that additional payout is going to get eaten up in the additional travel.

I agree. And the MWC can be better than the AAC by exploiting that more sensible geographic advantage. The AAC has many of the same issues CUSA does... they just have the money and media package to overcome it. MWC can certainly be on par with the AAC. Kind of reminds me of the old CAA and A10 rivalry. Of course if Boise, SD etc move to the AAC it would really hurt the MWC much like ODU, VCU and GMU leaving hurt the CAA and made it uncompetitive with the A10.

Unless forced to or another team really rises their profile this is right. The thread in question on the AAC board quotes the commissioner repeatedly pushing the P6 agenda and thinking they belong with the autonomous group. They're not going to add anyone that doesn't further this goal.

JJ would not be able to cling to those 20 win season's, in the AAC. Those year's were against a weak league, and cup cake OOC teams.

We don't offer much of anything to the AAC. Navy is the only school in our region and is a national brand (they don't need us to get on TV) and it is football only. Might make for a travel partner for ECU. Can't think of anything else. Chances of getting into that league as it is in the foreseeable future is next to 0.

I think it depends on the next 3 years. If RR can get us into some bowl games and win some, brings the fans back to sell outs. And if bball can at minimum stay in the top 3 of the league and maybe make the dance once everything else is attractive. Baseball is crushing it, soccer, tennis, new volleyball, all doing well.

Budget for it, good facilities (minus stadium expansion), academically in the ball park (would be ahead of ECU and 4 others), #42 in population with no sports rival. All that + our 757 branding and regional efforts all play nicely... just my opinion though. I think we're more attractive than most feel.

With UCONN gone Temple is out on a bit of an island. ODU is close to ECU, Navy, and Temple, and I'd say close enough to Cincinnati for them to be a regional partner.

It’s weird how everyone assumes the teams added have to be competitive in every single sport at the time they are added. This completely ignores the addition of Tulane and ECU. The former was pretty mediocre in CUSA at football and basketball. The latter was terrible at hoops and has been awful at football since it joined.

That's true. I don't think it's a pre-req but I think it gets the fan bases on board and the general public. Which I'm sure makes the sell easier. I think in our case we don't have as much history to lean on to show sustainability so I think being competitive in football right now is more important than say a Tulane or ECU. They've got more history.

I do agree with this. I said foreseeable future. A big run led by RR would certainly change things.

For travel no doubt. When I say "region" I am talking media region (DC). I may be wrong, but I believe that is pretty important.

I mean, Tulane has been around for a long time but their history is not filled with a lot of success. They’ve only been to the NCAAs in hoops 3 times and their last trip was 1995. In football, they’ve been to 13 bowl games in like 100 years (3 of which happened after they joined the AAC). They had 3 bowl game appearances in the 20 years leading up to joining. They have one conference championship (1998) since 1950.

Ya, the Tulane add was a head scratcher to me but money talks I guess?
