Brand New Playoff Expansion News
Not just speculation, or rumors from unnamed sources...
Quote:CFB executive director Bill Hancock, who never rocked the boat as the face of the BCS and now the CFP, revealed the CFP's working group had reviewed 63 (!) possibilities of expanding the playoff. The options included six-, eight, 10-, 12- and 16-team fields. No further information was provided, but those few lines might have well said expansion of the four-team field is not only coming, but it could be coming soon.
It's possible -- not likely -- the working group that includes SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby could whittle the 63 possibilities and make a recommendation to the CFP's management committee as early as June 22. Word is a vote on such a change would need to come this year to better prepare for an expanded field beginning with the 2023 season.
It looks like there is a good chance that it is going to happen, and I'm guessing that they will start with 8 teams, with a spot going to the highest ranked G5, and one home game for the top 4. This would make a lot more sense than a 16 team playoff or any other format some were peddling here.
Playoff Expansion Talk
To put things into perspective, Cincinnati would have been in this year, and we would have been in last year. Another thing that I think will happen, is that it will lead to non P5 teams being ranked more fairly. Last year Florida was at #7 and Cincinnati was at #8. It is one thing to screw Cincinnati when there are no real repercussions, but with an 8 team playoff, you for sure would rather play a 3 loss Florida team than an undefeated Cincinnati team. I guarantee that in 2017, every single team would have preferred to play a 2 loss USC team instead of undefeated UCF.

College sports, like everything else, took a huge revenue hit in 2020. There's just too much $$$ sitting out there for them not to expand to at least 8.

They are saying the added games could be worth an additional $420 million.

If there's not a path for each conference to be represented it will continue to be a sham.

I would prefer a 16 team playoff.
An 8 team playoff is acceptable now.
4 teams is stupid and misguided.
The BCS was un-American, elitist and stupid.

Just like BB having every conference rep'ed doesn't mean you get the best teams. It guarantees you don't. In the example you can come up with you could easily ID 20 teams better than the bottom four seeds listed.
I would rather them chose have the consensus top 14 and the final 2 spots given to the top two G5 teams unless they are already ranked in the top 14 and that makes those two spots at-large regardless of P or G.
I think the NCAA may be scared the Super League concept is gaining ground so they have to do something to (1) include more teams, and (2) feed the $$$ addiction.

the fcs this year had 16 team playoff, with 10 conference champions and 6 at large
but they normally have a 24 team playoff

Don't even care.
If you aren't the best of your subset (your conference), then you are not the best of the set (national championship).

The only way for a G5 team to have a legitimate shot is to either move to 8 & get an automatic birth or move to 16 teams. Expanding to 8 teams with no G5 guarantee is almost as bad as the current system.

Yeah ... unless we get neutral sites ...NO PLAYING AT THE HIGHEST SEED GAMES ...
then it's as bad as it is now. And that would require screwing up the Bowl System.
so it probably aint 'gwine happen.

It's not basketball or baseball. You can't trot out players for 16 games and there will be a lot of injuries and players opting out. It has to be practical. With your scenario, in 2019, Miami Of Ohio makes it in as the winner of the MAC with an 8-5 record. They lost 5 games by the following point totals...
24 Iowa
22 Cincinnati
71 Ohio State
22 Western Michigan
14 Ball State
In a 16 team playoff, you would have 5 out of the 16 teams outside of P5 conferences, and multiple teams in the top 15 excluded at the expense of teams that aren't ranked, that nobody cares about. This will never fly because it makes no sense on any level. There is a good chance that 75% of the first two rounds will generate dismal ratings. You will also have grossly lopsided matchups in the first two rounds where you risk a lot of injuries.
8 is the number. It's not too many games, and you have a non P5 participant. Give the G5 an additional spot in a NY6 game, and it becomes as fair and as competitive as anyone could hope for.

It's actually much worse if that happens, but I haven't heard anything that doesn't include one G5 participant.

They don't have to concern themselves with watering down bowl games that generate hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue every year.

A guaranteed slot for each conference is the only way to go. I'm honestly surprised the government hasn't stepped in with some anti-trust accusations since power conferences have two votes to any G5s 1 vote under the current system[/i]. The G5s really need a political advocate like Utah had with Hatch. He single-handily almost brought the whole sham to end when Utah was on the outside, but stopped his pursuit once they were invited.

There is a definite scenario for taking the top 8 "committee ranked" teams. And that would certainly leave out the G5 many years.

That's the problem with an 8 team playoff based on COMMITTEE SELECTION. The P-5 bias will simply have a G-5 no better than 9th. So you say the G-5 should get a guaranteed slot. Then the P-5 bias simply shifts to seeding. The G-5 rep will always play the #1 seed. They throw a little share of the increased revenue at the G-5 and say shut up, sit down & know your place.

I'm not saying it won't happen, but I haven't seen a single scenario where that is even being discussed.

It will be the opposite. The top G5 team will actually get a little respect from the committee. Cincinnati was obviously much better than a 3 loss Florida team. In 2017, UCF was obviously much better than a 2 loss USC team.
UCF won the game in 2017, almost won in 2018 with their crappy backup quarterback, we were in it in 2019, and Cincinnati should have won last year. The AAC rep will always be the wildcard. When the AAC team is obviously better than 8th in the country, it will be ranked that way.

RE: Brand New Playoff Expansion News
I like the 12 team tournament. Top 8 conference champions and 4 at large. Top 4 seeds get a bye. 4 conference champions play the at large teams. That is a good start and will go a long way to creating more opportunity for non p5 teams in recruiting and better OOC games. P5 teams that don't play competitive G5 teams should be penalized and have a more difficult shot at the at large invites. Eventually i like a 24 team tourney.
