Total speculation on my part, but I was thinking he might be who the Bengals were targeting with the next pick.

Could just be spin but sounds like that really wanted Carman to the point they'd have taken him at 38 if they couldn't find the right trade down.

The experts aren't as high on him though everyone loves his potential. He's a guy that could make them look great or bad.

FWIW, passing on Jenkins, who at the time was generally the highest rated OT on the board at the time, and trading down makes sense given DH's tweet below. Pick up an additional 4th and "get their guy" whoever that guy ends up being.

So far I like this draft from the Bengals. Got a Game Changer. Got a T that can start at G. Got an Edge that dropped for some reason. Plus now will have 3 picks in the next round.

Taylor said they would have taken Carman at 38 although I'm not sure I believe him. If true, the fact that they were confident that he'd still be there at 46 goes to your point that he probably wasn't as high on most others' boards - particularly the public ones that we see. As a fan, I get a kick out seeing us get guys projected to have gone much earlier but if you're the Bengals you've obviously got to trust your evaluations and board.

If I'd have followed all the Lapham interviews closer and earlier I probably should have seen the Carman pick coming, followed by a DE in R3. I finally got around to his pod with Hoard and they were talking about how the Bengals were picking 6th in R2 and how that boded well with 7 OL he mentioned all still available. They were the usual suspects with the addition of Carman who I know Lap's mentioned a few times as being in the same company as the others (despite generally a lower ranking on the Big Boards). Carman does shape up as a make it or break it guy from this draft. If he becomes a solid starter (and especially if we kick him out to RT in a year or two) who cares what the other R2 OL do. But if he flops, that pick of Carman is going to sting.

Also interestingly, they talked about getting an OL and a DE in R2 and R3 in whatever order as a strong possibility. Ossai was the 2nd guy Dan mentioned as a possibility. Whichever order they took the DE and OL, then they could look to double dip with an OL in R4. So at this point, especially now that we have 3 R4 picks, I'd be shocked if we don't add another OL (Hudson maybe?) in R4.

i would extend that somewhat to Sewell (the prospect some thought we should have taken), Chase (the guy we took) and Carmen (the OL we took). Obviously, how Sewell does on a different team only means so much but if he ends up being mediocre or worse, it takes the sting out of passing on him. Similarly, Chase and Carmen's performances will go a long way towards how this draft grades out in the long run, imo. All that said, i don't treat it as zero-sum. if all three succeed wildly, it's a win-win-win of sorts.

Not a big fan of the Bengals' work today.

Wasted a pick on a K and took a DT that lacks real upside.

I don’t mind taking a PK there if he’s the best on the board. A kicker affects the game in more ways than a 5th round OL or LB or whatever would.

i'm not opposed to taking a kicker either but they probably could have waited until the sixth or even seventh round to select him.

If you have an opening and there's a guy you really like I'm not too bothered by it. I guess this is the second time in what 4 or five years for the Bengals but ideally the guy you pick is your guy for closer to a decade. I'm OK with being a little too early once every 4-10 years on your kicker pick in the back portion of the draft. Here's Simmons:

Quote:"With kickers you have to take them one round higher than what you think their ability is," Simmons said. "If I believe a guy was a sixth-round talent and all 32 teams in the league believe he is a sixth-round talent, that means for us to have accessibility, you have to take him a round higher than that. There are some teams that I've identified that have a need at kicker, some of which had multiple picks in this round. We felt like we had to stay out in front of those that way, if this is the route we wanted to go to try and bring Evan on.

RE: Bengals 2021 off-season (free agency, draft, etc.)
Why McPherson?

Quote:McPherson caught Simmons' eye in one of the few pro days he attended with a 21 of 22 effort where the only miss was from 58 yards. In his inimitable fashion, Simmons also put McPherson through various difficult situations in order to simulate game day distractions.

"He had an excellent pro day in front of three or four special teams coaches. We put him in some tough spots and he never blinked," Simmons said. "I tried to break his concentration and it never fazed him. Hopefully that's what we'll see on Sundays."

It was the only time the NFL could have any interaction with him, but he made good.

"Pro Day was super fun. It was my first interaction with the coaches in person," McPherson said. "I knew that day was pretty big, with the coaches seeing me kick in person. I knew I needed to make a good impression. I kicked really well. I talked to Coach Simmons and was super happy with how I performed that day."

McPherson hit 85 percent of his kicks in Gainesville during three seasons and missed just one of 150 extra-point tries. He was six of 11 from 40 yards and beyond last season, but he had four from 50 yards and beyond and made a long of 55 yards against Ole Miss in the first game of the season. He also hit two 50-plus yarders against Georgia.

"You have to remember, we're still getting a young guy here," Simmons said. "He's a junior. He has a big leg. He has a lot of positive traits to work with, one of which is that he's super competitive. He rises up in critical spots and tough spots. You want a kicker to obviously be good in clutch situations, and I think that he will show that."

Simmons could be the highest regarded coach on the Bengals so I cut him some slack if this is his guy. I wish McPherson had more experience in bad weather, but I'm good with it. Time will tell.

Kind of sad that the Bengals talk on here died down. Training camp started this week. I'm still following from afar, but not like I used to. Why the lack of interest?

1. They are the Bengals.
2. Taking the "wait and see" approach.
3. Tired of/no longer follow the NFL because of Kneeling/Protests, Black National Anthem, etc.
4. More interested in Bearcat Football.

There's probably some of all that in play. The few posts here don't seem to spark much intelligent conversation so it certainly doesn't inspire more attempts. The Reds talk here isn't all that much better unfortunately imo. I think Gruehls envisioned this to be a solid outlet (albeit OT) for many Cincinnati sports beyond UC. But things and times change I guess.

At least with UC (here or 247 if you subscribe) and the Reds (Old Red Guard), there seem to be viable outposts where a lot of fans congregate to discuss. Maybe it's just me, but I'm not sure where to go for deeper Bengals conversations. Anybody know where the most active Bengals discussion sites are?

FWIW, and probably to the surprise of few, I'm very excited about the Bengals this year. If they can stay fairly healthy (Joe B in particular), I wouldn't be surprised if this was their best year since Carson got hurt at least.

So it's called The Bengals Board? Somehow I think I should have found that sooner and easier - doh. Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out.

When we hit the preseason I'll probably talk more Bengals. Really UC is the only team I care about in the offseason enough to really get into things.

RE: Bengals 2021 off-season (free agency, draft, etc.)
Looking forward to catching some of the action tonight in the Bengals' preseason opener. No Burrow so it will be tough to learn much, especially offensively. But hopefully the OL represents well. Slightly encouraging to see this:

Of course it's just preseason, but it sounds like Sewell has been struggling so far for the Lions fwiw. And the OL a lot of us were targeting as he slipped in R2 before the Bengals surprised us with Carman instead, OT Teven Jenkins, still hasn't even practiced for the Bears due to an injury pre-existing the draft.

Lest anyone think all is well, however, it's pretty clear the Bengals are less than thrilled with Jackson Carman so far. Hopefully he'll show better in games (even preseason) than he apparently has in camp to date. And although it sounds like he might be starting to put it together JaMarr Chase apparently hasn't kicked all the rust off of his game yet either. It would be nice to see both of them get some time and more importantly see some success tonight.

Was most impressed with the defense. They seem to have an edge about them that they've missed since Burfict left. Hard to get a read on the offense without JB in there. The few times Mixon touched the ball, he looked like he hit the holes harder and quicker. Didn't dance around as much. Chase didn't do much, but I find myself getting more impressed every time Tee Higgins catches a pass. He just looks the part. Big, fast, and smooth. That new kicker they drafted, Evan McPherson, looks to have a hell of a leg on him. To me, Carmen looks lost out there playing with 3rd teamers. On the flip side, Billy Price looked like he had a good game playing with the 1st and 2nd string.

Bengals just traded Billy Price. They've had some bad first round picks, but that one had disaster written all over it in the moment. Huge Huge reach at the time and has been a disastrous pick his entire time in stripes. Many of their past misses were of reasonably hyped guys with potential. Price was a huge question from day 1.
