Maybe, maybe not. Its very unlikely he's going about filling the positions through a job posting. It's just an HR requirement to post those things.

Unless its for a grad position, which I'm pretty sure I heard he was interested in having a grad assistant. Otherwise, he should have a wide network of guys he knows and has a similar coaching philosophy as his that he's been in contact with.

I understand where you are coming from, but it shows (2) on the posting. If they are just looking for one grad assistant update the posting. I got the link from "hoops dirt"(I think?). Just noticed the posting was 4/23 with a closing date of 5/03 with salary range of $70000 t0 $85000.

I'm just guessing this posting doesn't really mean anything and anyone who would apply through it is probably not a serious candidate anyway.

Any person who would realistically be a candidate, they have and know other routes into this than applying to a post online.

Grad assistants are different though probably.

And maybe he's looking for 2 grad assistants?

For some reason, I feel like I heard him say he was open to having two on the staff in one of his initial press conferences or videos.

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
MAC Transfer Update:

Michael Nuga - Transferring from Kent State to UNLV - RS Senior - 6’2” - PG - 2* recruit from Brebeuf College School (North York, ON) - Nuga started his collegiate playing career at Eastern Florida JC (Cocoa, FL) where he played for 2 seasons before transferring to Portland State. He spent 1 season as a Viking, having a pretty good season as a part-time starter, before transferring again to Kent State where he played 2 seasons. He sat out his first season as a transfer redshirt and then played this past season where he played and started in 13 games averaging 32.5 minutes and 17.8 ppg/5.5 rpg/1.6 apg and 1.5 spg shooting 50% from the field (38.5% 3PT - 37 of 96) and 80.6% FT (25 of 31). While I’ll never fault a guy for transferring as a grad student, this has to sting for Kent State. Nuga was a pretty good find coming out of Portland State and was a major contributor. Oh well...such is life in the MAC, amirite??? Coming out of HS/JUCO, Nuga received additional offers from Jacksonville, Utah State and Sam Houston State.

MAC Transfer Update:

Luke Maranka - Transferring from Toledo to Davenport University (D-II - Grand Rapids, MI) - Sophomore - 6’10” - C - 2* recruit from Grand Rapids Angels Homeschool (born in Ada, MI) - Maranka has played 2 seasons at Toledo. As a sophomore, Maranka played in 13 games (0 starts) averaging 4.2 minutes and 0.6 ppg/0.8 rpg shooting 27.3% from the field and 100% FT (2 of 2). This really isn’t a big loss for Toledo but put together with the rest of their recent losses and it creates a lack of any kind of depth in the post. Coming out of HS, Maranka received additional offers from Ball State, Jacksonville, Kent State, American, and Ferris State.

MAC Transfer Update:

Luke Toliver - Transferring from Western Michigan - Undecided on transfer destination - Junior - 6’3” - SG - 2* recruit from Paw Paw HS (Paw Paw, MI) - Toliver has spent 3 seasons at Western Michigan as a part-time player. Last season, Toliver played in 7 games (0 starts) averaging 8.3 minutes and 2.4 ppg/1 rpg shooting 43.8% from the field (22.2% 3PT - 2 of 9) and 50% FT (1 of 2). Coming out of HS, Toliver received no other offers.

NIU Recruiting Update:

Emmanuel “Bube” Momah - UNCOMMITTED - 6’7” - SF - 2* recruit from Phillips Academy - Andover (Andover, MA - born in Farmington, CT - To be completely honest, I can’t fully tell from his videos how good Momah is. What I can say is….holy ****!...this guy is a specimen. He’s 100% NOT a small forward unless he only has an outside game when the cameras aren’t rolling. This dude is a power forward and he is ridiculously physically impressive. 6’7” and looks like an athlete. Dude’s built like a brick shithouse. As for his videos, it’s basically him dunking and dominating opponents because he’s bigger, longer, and more athletic than them and it’s nowhere close to being fair. He is apparently getting some pretty strong interest from some really intriguing schools. It’s reported that he’s gotten a lot of interest from Yale, George Washington, Dartmouth and Harvard. So, the dude is a hell of an academic as well as being physically gifted. Currently, Momah has official offers from Rice, Lehigh, Yale, George Washington, Columbia, Fairfield, Dartmouth, Little Rock, Holy Cross, Marist, Quinnipiac, Siena, Manhattan and Bryant. Harvard has not made an offer but (as of last summer) were one of 4 schools who were showing him the most interest.

With Coach Burno being from the East Coast and playing for Bob Hurley at St. Anthony's, it is definitely a door opener to players in an area we never had much luck in recruiting.

Phiilips is the Harvard of American high schools. It's an Ivy pipeline school. They mostly play other rich kid schools. Anyone who gets in there is either super rich, very well connected, brilliant, a great athlete who is also pretty smart or some combo of the above.

MAC Transfer Update:

Colin Golston, Jr. - Transferring from Siena to Eastern Michigan - 6’7” - PF - 2* recruit from Ferndale HS (Ferndale, MI - born in Detroit) - Golston, Jr. started his career at Siena and played 1 season where he played in 13 games (4 starts) averaging 19.1 minutes and 5.2 ppg/3.1 rpg shooting 50% from the field (37.5% 3PT - 9 of 24) and 44.4% FT (4 of 9). Gotta like a big man with D-1 experience even though it looks like he may not be all that good from the line...but seems to be just fine from behind the arc. Coming out of HS, Golston, Jr. received no other offers.

Not sure if this was previously mentioned, but, both Coach Beane and Coach Chapman were recently removed from the basketball website page.

I can’t believe that they have yet to hire any assistant coaches, or, if they have, not released that information. Coach Burno was hired six weeks ago.

Appreciate and applaud all the hard work Big Red does in tracking all of this. No big deal, but one slight correction, Davenport University is a D-II program actually located in Grand Rapids, MI, not in Iowa.

Well...I'll be....

I even looked it up but I suppose I just didn't look past the classification and assumed it was in Iowa. I guess I just had it in my head and glossed over it.

I'll change it. Thanks for the heads up!

I too find it odd the lack of any kind of urgency to update the website roster. Up until some time last week it still had Chapman and Beane, Sr. listed.

I suppose they're moving in the right direction now. At least they have coach Burno and Hankerson's brother listed. Just need to fill it out.

Although, I do wonder if, with this recent update of the website, does that actually mean Burno hasn't hired any assistants?

That is worrisome, if true. At least I think it would be.

For comparison, I looked at some other schools. EMU only has Heath listed as a coach and CMU only has Barbee listed.

So, with our lone GA, maybe getting Burno named as early as we did got us out ahead of the pack!!!

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
I believe we will get the assistants announced in the next week as the job posting closed 5/03. As Red said earlier Burno probably had his guys earlier but he had to go thru university requirements (I was going to say "jump thru hoops", but that would have been confusing). With the job posting stating $70000 to $85000 salary, would that be in the grad assistant range or full assistant range?

GO HUSKIES!!!!!!!!!

I'm pretty sure GAs don't get paid (or at least anything close to that). I think they're students who get credit or scholarship money to be on staff.

70-85k is 100% for an assistant. But frankly, I'm surprised it's that high. I thought the numbers being put out their for coach budget wouldn't support a salary that high..then again, we don't know how many assistants there will be which effects the size of the slice of the pie.

July 1st starts new fiscal year. Maybe they are waiting so they don't have to pay 4 assistants for 3 months

I don't think anyone would take a HC job with the demands that you are to be build a first class Div. 1 program, expected to win the MAC, and make the NCAA tourney on a consistent basis without any assistant coaches for the first 5 months of your tenure.

But I do think you are right that they are waiting for the fiscal year to start to announce them. I am sure there is alot of accounting juggling(Thank God NIU has a top ten Accounting program) to stay within this year's scaled back budget, but I am sure they are paying his assistants as contractors until the new fiscal year starts
