NuM is in a large metro area (1M vs 200k). NuM has double the undergrad student enrollment of NMSU (22,244 vs 11,675). ABQ is 45 minutes from Santa Fe. NMSU is over 4 hours away. The vast majority of NM legislators have degrees from NuM (all the lawyers do as NMSU does not have a school for lawyers). I could go on and on but you get the picture.

I wonder why the mighty Junior Aggies aren't shown under the AD budget article that was provided? Must be something to do with D2...

True, Tarleton currently has about half the athletic budget as nmsu. That will change over the next few years, but as of today it's true.

And one would think that such a deficit would create a distinct competitive advantage for nmsu, especially against a lowly transitioning school like Tarleton.

However, what we've seen unfold during our first year of transition is quite the opposite:

"Big 3" Sports, Tarleton vs nmsu Head to Head 2020-2021

Football 1-0 (complete and utter domination)
Basketball 1-1
Baseball 2-2

Total: Tarleton 4, nmsu 3

Or, in other words, Tarleton > nmsu

Just as I've been saying all along.

Illiterate Texan, correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t there some little virus that affected everything this year? Is this year really the year to be comparing teams? I’ve never used covid as an excuse for NMSU and I won’t now. But it affected every team and it wasn’t a normal year. If you want to hang your hat on this year, go for it.

PS, if you want to compare schools keep it to basketball. 99% of Aggie fans care about basketball and little else.

For the most part, many of our non-revenue team rosters are filled with New Mexico HS products. That makes it difficult to compete against programs in more talent rich States. Basketball is one of the few sports where NMSU spend a sufficient amount on recruiting to be competitive.

And while they aren't a rich school compared to many around the country, UNM does have a much larger endowment as well. NMSU really lags in that department compared to many universities like ours.

Just curious as to why there was such a difference and it has somewhat been answered. I am also curious if conference affiliation impacts the $ and if so, how much?

When NMSU requested $875,000 for synthetic turf several years ago (The only request athletics made that year), the State allocated $130,000. A private donor and the Student Government ended up providing the money needed.

I poke fun, but in all seriousness the unfair and biased approach the NM State legislature has placed against NMSU is total BS. The alumni and students deserve better regardless of the location of the school.

This....

In my own uneducated opinion, this is one of the biggest reasons you see NMSU fans with a bit of an identity crisis.

Over on the main forum there is a discussion going on about states population per P5 school. That made me think of population per D1 and population per FBS team. New Mexico is certainly toward the bottom in both, which obviously makes support more of a challenge.

How far is it from Las Cruces to El Paso?? That's a pretty big metro area right there, although the Aggies must contend with the Miners for talent, fans, and financial support from there. Does UTEP have a law school??

NMSU and UTEP are 40 miles apart. If you add Las Cruces, El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, the metro area is quite large. The problem is few from Juarez are interested in college sports.

El Paso belongs to the minors. Not sure if they have a law school.

Another person said it's about 40 miles which is relatively close, but if you're a random El Pasoan with no affiliation and want to go to a g5 basketball or football game are you gonna choose the <20 minute trip or the 60< minute trip?

Idk what El Paso traffic is like so idk how long it takes the random El Pasoan to get to UTEP or NMSU.

NMSU (and the athletic department) need to put any surplus capacity into growing the endowment. State support is weak, so we need to adopt a quasi-private funding model.

It depends on what side of town someone lives at in El Paso. For instance, it could be quicker for someone who lives on the Westside of El Paso to get to NMSU, compared to someone in the Far East of El Paso to get to UTEP.

This is... very generous to NMSU. Isn't the state line almost exactly half way?

This is exactly why I ask in the ask the AD what is being done to further the program all the time. I just want to see if they have the same view of it. I haven’t heard that exact thing come out of MM’s mouth.

I agree with the endowment effort you speak of. It is, in my view, the only way to get out from underneath the fiscal control of the NM legislature. We’ve played this game for far too long. Time to take it into our own hands and put together a funding drive to fill up the endowment.

GO AGGIES!!!!

He’s correct. You ever driven from one side of El Paso to the other? It takes about as long as driving from NMSU to UTEP.

Getting from Far East El Paso is actually easier to get to Las Cruces than from just east of the Mountain. There is a loop road that you can take, then turn north towards Alamogordo, then cross the mountain and get onto I25. But El Paso is UTEP country. NMSU grads are teachers, engineers, farmers and ranchers. They do not make as much as the Lawyers and Dr's from UNM. So the endowment, from donations, is less.

The fact that NMSU is as competitive as they are is quite amazing.
