2021-22 Roster
So, with AJ McGinnis from UNCG committed, here's how next year's roster currently looks. I realize that classes are a bit fungible, so I'm classifying them by likely number of years remaining. Ideally, we bring in a 4/5 who can start immediately and has more than a year of eligibility remaining.

Seniors
David Dejuilius - 6'0" PG (SG) - 9.1 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 4.1 APG
Hayden Koval - 7'1" C - 7.0, 3.8, 2.2 Blocks (UNCG)
John Newman III - 6'5" SF - 3.7, 2.0, 1.1 (Clemson)

Juniors
Jeremiah Davenport - 6'7" SF - 11.7, 5.0, 1.6
Rob Banks - 6'5" SF
Mika Adams-Woods - 6'3" PG (SG) - 8.6, 2.5, 1.9

Sophomores
Mason Madsen - 6'4" SG - 6.5, 3.0, 1.2
Mike Saunders Jr. - 6'0" PG - 3.5, 1.4, 1.4
A.J. McGinnis - 6'3" SG - 6.0, 1.5 (UNCG)
Jarrett Hensley - 6'8" PF (SF) - 1.8, 0.9 (UNCG)

Freshmen
Viktor Lakhin - 6'11" C

RE: 2021-22 Roster
That roster doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence. There's still many higher end guys left in the transfer portal. I am surprised he used his second last scholarship on another UNCG player. Koval is a one year band-aid, Hensley has decent upside, but the McGinnis add is head scratching. This is a team of sub-.500 talent for the next few years. Let's hope Wes is a heck of a motivator, developer and X's/O's guy.

We needed a one-year band-aid at Center and got it. Plus, I'd argue that McGinnis has some solid upside, as he averaged 6.0 PPG as a freshman on a NCAA tourney team. We have two scholarships remaining - if we land at least one impact player to pair with DDJ, Davenport and a promising supporting cast, I think we'll be in the top half of the conference next year.

Need some bangers. If you can get a rare talent at wing you take him, otherwise bangers.

Still haven’t heard if DDJ and Lahkin are returning and Banks isn’t staying on scholarship if they really need it. Potentially 5 more open spots.

With the addition of another UNCG player we have to be favored to win the SOCON!

Hey, at least UNCG won their conference, conference tourney and made the dance! I know someone who didn't...

I'll say the same thing I said about Brannen getting guys from the Horizon - if raiding UNCGs roster gets UC wins in March, I'm all in favor. I guess we'll see how it plays out. I'm hoping he has some talent still on the way.

Can't say I'm totally happy with how the roster is shaping up at this point though.

I'm not a fan of adding McGinnis. He's 6'3" and shoots 57% from the free-throw line. He had more turnovers than assists. His advanced defensive metrics are average (and that's against SoCon competition).

Last year, his offer list was Southern Illinois, Boise State, Jacksonville State, Stephen F. Austin, UAB, Samford, and UNC-G.

He's in the same class as Mason Madsen and Mike Saunders, so he'll be taking minutes from two better players who already had one foot out the door earlier.

I fail to see the upside.

I hope I'm proven wrong.

Not to pick nits, but aren't opponents factored into most advanced statistics?

Everything else, I don't disagree with. Seems like a roster balancing move and hoping he'll put it together, but I like that he is an athletic wing with at least a modicum of outside shooting prowess. Also, the kid only shot 14 FTs all year, so that 57% is skewed rather mightily by shooting 1-4 in his first ever college game.

All of that aside, I have to trust the process and hope that it translates to wins.

Bolded, I'm in the same place. My only take on this is he was busy assembling a coaching staff with UNCG connections and securing former players he felt could take their game up a notch to play at UC. I think Miller will now be judged largely on the choices he makes with the remaining scholarship or two.

We're either going to play really small next season or DDJ isn't returning as I'm struggling to figure out how the minutes are going to be distributed with this many guards - all who played significantly last season.

Of the guys we've brought in this is the one I'm least enamored with. Overall we've filled some needs. Got some upside talent. But nobody is coming that would be considered a homerun before they step foot on campus.

He played a ton of 3-guard lineups at UNC-G, so I wouldn't be shocked with the former being the case.

Right now there is MAW, DDJ, Madsen, Saunders, McGinnis, and Newman who I think are all going to be primarily wing/perimeter guys. If you run 3-guard sets, you're going to be able to find minutes for most of those guys (MAW/DDJ/Newman as the starters with Madsen/Saunders/McGinnis as the replacements). My guess is that all of the younger guys will see at least 10 minutes a game unless he pulls some ballers from the rafters with his last two schollies, and even then, they're probably going to be interior guys instead.

Baylor and other teams play three guards so it can work if that is the direction. I look at this as more of a bench depth filler. Everyone can't play significant minutes but you need dudes on the bench as backups. You need younger dudes to develop and grown into their roles. We can still add a piece or two to the roster.

Overall your post is fair, but it's a bit of a spin to defend a 57% FT shooter by noting he hardly ever get to the line anyway. I mean both are basically bad.
