He literally talked constantly about having A packed house similar to Bowen Field House, all the greats from the 80's and early 90's by name! He said he did pay attention on how E Michigan basketball was doing, and he realizes how far this program has fallen! He's from Detroit, Michigan, and he's a Huron and now an Eagle! He said all of this over a 12 minute speech! His enthusiasm was phenomenal, but can he restore the program? I don't mean .500 in the MAC consistently, I mean 14-4, 15-3 MAC records that we were accustomed to for those 10 years! Football and basketball have never come close to those years from 87-92 in both, and basketball from 87-98! Eagle Sam, who I've the upmost respect for on his knowledge of basketball deserves to see A MAC championship! We went to FOUR consecutive MAC title games from 94-98! I sure hope Stan Heath can do it........

What you say is true, but I don't think G-League HCs are paid that well so the salary fit wasn't bad.

Never ask a rich coach (e.g., John B.) to work for a pittance, even if they don't need the money.

Boy, the City of Detroit should hire you to do PR. Remember when Detroit was the Paris of the Midwest. It was considered great. Now it is a city in great decay.

Things change over time. Never know the next great city or next city to go into decline.

I have no idea where we'll be in 3 - 5 years. I'm not a basketball prophet.

The MAC is a middle of the way conference. there are PLENTY of conferences beneath the MAC that we could pull a head coach from - not even counting div 2
https://www.teamrankings.com/ncaa-basket...ng-by-conf

I can tell you 320K is NOT the median salary for a head coach in D-I. Most MAC coaches are way UNDER paid compared to their school's standing in the rankings.

And as far as hiring a D-II coach. Not by me. Ben Braun was not hired as a non-D-I coach. He was PROMOTED from being an EMU assistant coach. He was a D-I coach at the time. He was working his way up the ladder. Many coaches begin as H.S. coaches and then go onto collegiate careers. Heath actually coached at Ypsilanti Lincoln.

https://emueagles.com/sports/mens-basket...heath/1643

Braun was the head coach at Siena Heights for 8 seasons before taking the EMU assistant position an assistant position that he was promoted to head coach halfway through the first season of. so he basically jumped from the NAIA level to div 1.

Ben's case is one of those case which can be debated.

Yes, your facts are correct. He was hired as Assoc. HC and moved over as interim head coach.

My point is: Had he not been hired as assoc HC, he would not have been named interim or permanent HC.

He was a 'in house' hire. Even though he hadn't been in the house long. Lol.

I think you guys are all simultaneously correct. Heath is not here just for the money- it is a personal connection. But when (not if) Heath gets EMU a MAC championship within the first 3 years, he will receive $1M+ offer from a bigger school. And he will take it. With all his success, I can’t imagine he crossed any thresholds of wealth that money had become insignificant- especially with two sons to provide for that I am sure he loves more than he loves his alma mater.

right - he was a head coach - not a career assistant. my point is previous head coaching experience is important - to me - as a hiring criteria

Will drive us nutty.

Patience is a virtue for EMU fandom because we don't have a good grapevine which lets us know whenever anyone does anything at the Convo.

We don't have a local beat writer so there is no one there asking the questions we wish were asked.

I doubt coach Heath was just spending days lying in his backyard enjoying the 80 degree sunny days. Oh, 80 degrees and sunny. That was Lakeland. 03-lmfao

We need a staff in place ASAP. Remember, Heath is inheriting a huge mess. What fan base there was, left probably 5 years ago. This is a BIG job. No time to waste.

its such a lazy take to act like this team is in total disarray. we arent in any more disarray than any other team at our level in the midwest. everything will work out fine.

Steve that is indeed the case. My posts about the Dial-Barnes era were the result of info gleaned from personal friendships with Amy Whitesall, Kevin Ryan, Jim Carty, etc... that covered EMU when the Ann Arbor News was a newspaper instead of MLive. Today I have nothing.

I would have loved Stan to have a staff assembled by now, but that would simply have been unpractical. He needs to do his due diligence, present offers and allow quality candidates time to make a decision about up righting their families.

With the advent of transfer-O-rama, building a quality staff may be more salient than recruiting prospects at the current time. Build the program foundation first. I suspect there will be plenty of good players available in two months.

Once again, we don't know what we don't know...

Sports Info does an excellent job doing what they are to do, namely, make official pronouncements for the U.

However, rumors, scoops, etc. etc. is the job of the news media, fan sites, etc. etc.

And that is where EMU completely lags. We are in the dark.

Hence, I don't speculate on things we are in the dark about. All we know is that EMU has not announced the assistant coaches. Does that mean we have zero or one or two or three. I do not know.

Since the Ann Arbor News, 'checked out' on EMU sports, we are flying in the dark.

I've learned to have patience. Who will be the assistant coaches? Have to wait. Who will be our players for next season? Have to wait. Schedule? Have to wait.

For reference, the last time we named a new head coach, assistants were announced:
May 6th - Mike Brown
June 1st - Kevin Mondro
June 13th - Benny White
Wendale Farrow was retained from the previous staff as the Director of Basketball Operations (DOBO)

They managed to sign:
Austin Harper
Antoine Chandler
Dashonte Riley
Glenn Bryant
Daylen Harrison

They also won the MAC West and Murph was COY in the MAC in year one.

Murphy was hired on April 21st.

Ding. Ding. Ding. We have a winner.

Those who have the mentality that we needed to get our recruiting class lined up weeks ago are ignoring recent history and thinking like in the 90s before the ever changing paradigm shift in talent acquisition.

Some might say we'll do better NOT by going first but by seeing how the transfer portal shakes out.

Might add that in terms of getting a new HC, we did better by WAITING than by jumping the gun, firing Murphy early on and beginning a low keyed search before other schools. It seems to me that the HM schools went first and then the mid major next and the coaches got 'ordered' to their proper tiers.

Woah, KPJ! That is some serious historical research/reference. Thanks for sharing!

Your point is well taken, but I think the task ahead of Heath is considerably more significant then what Murphy had. This is particularly in terms of depth of backcourt and quality of frontcourt that was leftover from their predecessors. (Note, had Groce, Montero, Morgan, Love, and Lowder not transferred, this might have been a different case). Plus Murphy’s most prominent early recruit was Dashonte Riley, who he hardly had to actually recruit since he just came over with him from Syracuse. Anyway, comparing the below, I don’t think it is as likely to see a first year success from Heath. We’ll see...

Murphy
Backcourt
5-10 Darrell Lampley
6-3 Derrick Thompson
6-3 Antonio Green
6-3 JR Sims
6-3 Quinten Dailey
Added: 6-3 Austin Harper
Frontcourt
6-11 Jamel Harris
6-10 Matt Balkema
6-10 Kamil Janton
Added: 7-0 Deshontae Riley

Heath
Backcourt
6-2 McBride
6-3 Spottsville
Added: ????
Frontcourt
6-10 Binelli
6-8 Ballard
7-0 Okongo
Added: ????

RE: New MBB Coaching Thread (Assistant Coach)
Steve brings up a very good point. The consensus was that Murphy was a great recruiter, but almost all of his recruits were late season guys. Almost as if he got the guys who were probably above MAC level but not quite high major. They held out for too long hoping for high majors while all the mid-majors filled up their rosters that they really had little choice but to come to EMU. And were probably better talent than the players the mid majors were able to get to commit earlier on.

So once the transfer pool shakes out, the best of those still available will be the ones that are too good to commit to us now.

Almost as if he got the guys who were probably above MAC level but not quite high major. They held out for too long hoping for high majors while all the mid-majors filled up their rosters that they really had little choice but to come to EMU. And were probably better talent than the players the mid majors were able to get to commit earlier on.

Although Howard U. had problems with injuries and then Covid and the season shut down after either 4 or 5 games, they had picked up a 5-star recruit, Maker, in JULY.

Special case, to be sure, but recruits sign on throughout spring and summer. That end date for signing period has some legal ramifications but otherwise no big deal. Recruiting and signing doesn't end on the last day of spring signing period.

(the ramification is that signing AFTER the end date the LOI binds the school to athlete but not the athlete to the school. The player can sign a LOI on July 1 and 2 weeks later sign with a different school. Perfectly legal.)
