RE: CAA/FCS FOOTBALL
Great to see VMI in the playoffs. Likely will get JMU and will get creamed though, huge gap in overall size and team speed.

I watched the entire game, VMI just managed to hang around and not let JMU cover the spread at the end.
It would be nice to start playing VMI on a regular basis again. Beats playing Patriot league teams.
Davidson and VMI have had two of the most remarkable football turn arounds I have seen in my 40+ years watching college football. Both were winless just a few years ago, but in the playoffs this year as conference champs.

Who would have taken a bet in 2015, even knowing extenuating circumstances, that VMI and Davidson would have made FCS playoffs before the Tribe made it back?

Wonder how long it will take for the VMI coach to be poached? Great turnaround.

VMI kept it close against JMU, should they join the CAA?

Seth Morgan was great after taking over. Mt. Lebanon HS in Pittsburgh...we've recruited kids out of that very school but missed on him.
High School: Two-year letterman at quarterback and was named first team All-Conference at Mount Lebanon HS in Pittsburgh, Pa.…holds the school single season all purpose yards record (3,643 yards) and single game passing yards (457 – 6th best in WPIAL history…also participated in Nike Elite 7 on 7 team and was Indianapolis All-Tournament at QB…also lettered three years in track and posted a career best 6’-6’…honor roll…

And luckily 5 losing years in a row and 7 losing years in the last 10 does not get you kicked out.

RE: CAA/FCS FOOTBALL
I had a chance to attend the 1st round game Saturday in Brookings SD, the South Dakota State vs Holy Cross game, wanted to share some FCS observations:
1) I don’t think you would find a better FCS stadium complex. The stadium there was renovated a few years ago. The press box side features two tiers of boxes. The field is bowled in with a sizable end zone seating for students who were there in force. The scoreboard is enormous and on par with any you will see at an FBS stadium. Apparently the company that builds scoreboard technology is based there in Brookings.
2) The fans are just terrific, very friendly and so loyal to their “Jacks”, the jackrabbits. Everyone wears their colors, almost identical blue and yellow from Delaware. They couldn’t have been friendlier and so interested to play a team from the Atlantic Coast. The fans were overwhelmingly supportive and proud of their FCS home and level of play.
3 Their coach is in his 24th year. You hear some complaints on play calling which reminded me of comments you would hear here in the latter Laycock days. This is SDSUs 9th straight playoff appearance.
4: the game was “soldout”. They only sold 25% capacity (19,300 is full capacity). Fans were spread throughout. They did announce this coming weekends game will expand to 50% capacity.
5) regarding Covid, no one wore masks inside the stadium and it was pretty lax in town as well. The announcer 3 times made what were obviously compulsory announcements during the game about Covid, distancing, wearing masks, etc.. It really sounded absurd on the masks when you are sitting there in the beautiful sunshine, outdoors, and distance involved. I think the attitude there among all the fans was common sense and they have just come to the point of just dismissing some of these “requirements” entirely.
6) SDSU is the #1 seed though they didn’t overwhelm Holy Cross despite the score. It was a team I could see W&M being very competitive.
All in all, I can’t imagine too many better FCS environments. It was just outstanding. Such positive representation in FCS.

Fun (?) fact: South Dakota State is the only one of the D1 Dakota schools to not play in a dome.

My son is a Holy Cross alum and big fan. He had joined me on many a W&M road trip.

and South Dakota is the "tropical" Dakota; North Dakota is where people end up on the wrong side of wood chippers

Most interesting! Direct flight to MSP then a 4 hour drive to Brookings SD. It’s all backroads, no interstates. Through farm country and little towns, mostly through Minnesota. It all looked very healthy, lots of family farms and nice little towns.

When you fly across that part of the country you quickly realize that nobody lives there. At night it is truly dark from an airplane. Same with the Rocky Mountains. West of Denver it is black almost until you get to the coast. Fly up and down each coast and you can see where the people live.
