Because you might get to legally kill some people, drive 120 mph through town, break into the apartments of naked women, etc. And have a lifetime pension at the end of it.

I really hope you never need police assistance.

I hope he does. And I hope they send a social worker. He'll see firsthand how stupid an idea it is.

The prevailing rule of thumb around my parts is that cops are always around when you don't want them to be and never around when you need them.

RE: Defund the Police movement leads to nationwide police resignations
Quote:Friday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” network anchor Al Sharpton pushed for policing to be “defined by the federal government.” This call comes following the Derek Chauvin verdict and in the wake of the shooting of Ma’Khia Bryant in Ohio and Daunte Wright in Minnesota.

Sharpton warned that if change is not made, America will “continue to see these things, and it will end up tearing this society apart.”

“I think that the possibility of change is absolutely there at this moment,” Sharpton advised. “I’ve talked to Congresswoman Bass. I’ve talked to Senator Cory Booker. There are conversations going with Tim Scott. … As you saw a conviction of Chauvin, and then you see during the trial, the killing of Daunte Wright, and now we have a situation we’re looking to see what it is in Ohio and North Carolina, all in this short period of time, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery and all of these cases happened right around the time of George Floyd. If we can’t do it now, when will we ever be able to do it? I think the time has come for the nation to deal with it. President Biden and Vice President Harris have said it needs to be dealt with. We are seeing the absolute time that policing must be defined by the federal government. And if we don’t do it, we’ll continue to see these things, and it will end up tearing this society apart in an irreparable way.”

If resignations keep up, all that will be left are the bad ones.

If you resigned because society won't tolerate you kneeling another human's neck for 10 minutes then good riddance.

I know you dont really believe it is the "bad ones" leaving?

I am sure they all of a sudden put aside their power-trip, criminal mentality and decided to quit the job that allows them a conduit for their egos.

Most likely it is the cops who were just there for a job and decided it isnt worth standing in front of a brick building and being target practice for idiots throwing rocks.

If accountability makes you quit then bye Felicia. When the rules change the employees that were stealing usually quit.

RE: Defund the Police movement leads to nationwide police resignations
Quote:Representative Karen Bass (D-Calif.) said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” that qualified immunity for individual police officers should be part of a police reform package currently negotiated in Congress.

Partial transcript as follows:

STEPHANOPOULOS: Let’s talk about the issue of reform. As I said, our poll shows a solid majority for police reform. The legislation you’ve been working on would institute many changes, including a ban on choke holds, no-knock warrants and racial profiling by law enforcement. Where do negotiations stand this morning?

BASS: Well, first of all, we’ve been having information conversations with one of the caucuses in the House called the Problem Solvers, which is a bipartisan caucus, along with Senator Scott and Senator Booker. And so I believe that we can get these. I absolutely do. What’s most important is that we come up with ways to hold police officers accountable, so we will stop seeing these videos, so ending qualified immunity, decreasing the standard that is needed to prosecute an officer, so we won’t see so many times, when we know that a person has been killed or brutalized, and then we find that they’re not even prosecuted. And that’s because the standard to prosecute officers is so high. We also need to raise the…

STEPHANOPOULOS: You just hit on…

BASS: I’m sorry?

STEPHANOPOULOS: You just hit on the biggest sticking points in the negotiations, though, right now.

Senator Tim Scott, who is leading the Republican side on the negotiations, says lowering that standard for prosecutions is not on the table.

BASS: Well, we still have to talk about it. Oftentimes, people say there are red lines, I won’t cross them, and then, in negotiation, we find a pathway forward. And I’m hoping that we will be able to do that. But it’s also about raising the standard of policing in the United States. We have 18,000 police departments, and no national standards, which is why you see some practices legal in some areas and illegal in other areas. And so I think that that is critical.

And then, aside from that, when we do get the bill on President Biden’s desk, there will still be much more that needs to be done. We really do need to look at policing in America. And, so, we know that officers are trained to shoot to kill, but maybe much more emphasis could be placed on de-escalation, why some incidences result in people being killed. Maybe there were other ways to respond, other than firing.

I may be wrong but this sounds too much like Nazi Germany when they nationalize the police. You do that and the politicians have their own police force to do as they want. They don't like a certain individual then arrest him kind of thing for a made up charge as they do in totalitarian countries.

So you do think it is the bad cops that are leaving. Well, great, according to you, now all cops are good and any incident that happens I am sure you will come to the defense of the good cop.

As you can imagine, this is very personal issue for my family.

Also, as you can imagine when people start talking about defunding the police and all this other craziness, my family members become very defensive and angry. They feel like all of their hard work on the community’s behalf is for naught.

The answer is definitely not to throw the baby out with the bathwater. That would be the dumbest possible solution.

However, because they are reasonable people, they will also acknowledge that there are a lot of knuckleheads out there who need to be reeled in. They may not say that publicly, but privately they have said things to me like, “Most of the people I work with are really good cops. However, like every other industry, we do have some goofballs and they make the rest of us look bad.’”

My sister told me last summer that she has not undergone any sort of formal training in 17 years — 17 years! I don’t think the people who fill the ice cream at Dairy Queen go 17 years without some sort of training.

So, I definitely think we need to retrain much of our police force around this country so as to avoid so many of the circumstances that I’ve made the news in recent years. I think training would have resulted in a different outcome in a lot of these cases. I think more training would have caused that woman last week, for example, to not mistake her gun for a taser.

That’s a really dumb mistake with tragic consequences and it’s a consequence of poor training.

And really, she would want the extra training. Now, because she was not properly trained, multiple people’s lives have been ruined – including hers!

My uncle, one of the policeman I referenced earlier, has the best idea for this. He said last year that the solution would be to tie settlements to the pension fund and all this bull**** would end immediately.

That’s coming from a police officer! He did work in internal affairs so his perspective may be skewed a bit. Still, it’s an absolutely fabulous idea.

We all know there are bad actors within the ranks - there is (at least) one in every town. Some of this stems from yet another Democrat ideal - Unions.... A lot of these fuk-heads get protected by "their union". That is complete BS.

Cops should be fired if they cannot act responsibly and respectfully in their job - like any other non-union job.
Watch all of the cops worth anything walk as their pay and benefits get slashed to ribbons and their pension gets replaced by a 401k. If you want to see more Barney Fife incidents like we saw in Minnesota, this is a great stance to have.

There is another threat looming for cops. Some politicians have started calling for getting rid of qualified immunity (I believe that is the term) for cops. If that is done, if somebody sues a cop while he is doing his/her job, the cop must hire a lawyer on his own dime. Criminals would then have a field day, filing frivolous lawsuits and cops will quit in mass. Not worth it on a 40K a year salary.

Terrible idea.

Agree with you wholeheartedly.

But there is something to be said about sharing information on best practices.

RE: Defund the Police movement leads to nationwide police resignations
Quote:The members of the NYPD grew so disenchanted with their jobs in 2020 that over 5,300 uniformed officers either retired or quit, an astonishing 75% increase over the year before, amounting to 15% of the total number of officers on the force. The impetus for the officers quitting seemed to be the death of George Floyd and the unrest that followed; between May 25 and June 24, 2020, a whopping 272 officers left the force in one month.

2,600 officers quit and 2,746 filed for retirement, according to the New York Post. The 5,346 officers who left the force were nearly 2,300 more than left the force in 2019, when 1,509 officers quit and 1,544 filed for retirement.

This year, over 830 officers have left the NYPD. Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD sergeant and adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, warned, “Cops are forming a conga line down at the pension section and I don’t blame them. NYPD cops are looking for better jobs with other departments or even embarking on new careers.”

In March, the New York City Council voted for various police reform bills, among which was one to eliminate giving qualified immunity to the NYPD, thus permitting citizens to sue police officers for excessive force or unlawful searches and seizures.

Former Commissioner of the New York Police Department (NYPD) Bernard Kerik reacted to the City Council’s decision, asserting, “No police officer should work in a jurisdiction where they do not have the support of those they work for. Beginning today, I will no longer recommend young people consider the NYPD as a career.”

New York City Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said, “Ask any police chief that doesn’t have the final say on discipline and you will find a chief who has had officers returned to duty that shouldn’t have been, and in many of those cases more acts of misconduct by an officer the chief wanted to fire.”

The Post spoke to Police Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch, who stated:

The Mayor and City Council are absolutely trying to abolish the police. They’ve kept our pay absurdly low. They’ve ratcheted up our exposure to lawsuits. They’ve demonized us at every opportunity. And they’ve taken away the tools we need to do the job we all signed up for, which is to keep our communities safe.

Now the NYPD is spending money on slick recruiting ads to replace the experienced cops who are leaving in droves. City Hall should just admit the truth: police abolition-through-attrition is their goal. They won’t stop until the job has become completely unbearable, and they’re getting closer to that goal with every passing day.

“One disgusted NYPD sergeant said detectives and deputy inspectors have told him, ‘I’ve had enough’ and ‘This isn’t the job I signed up for.’ The sergeant fumed that ‘elected officials are cradling those causing complete chaos on our streets and taking every measure to literally handcuff our officers,’” the Post reported.

RE: Defund the Police movement leads to nationwide police resignations
Quote:Appearing Monday on the Fox News Channel, former Las Vegas Police Lt. Randy Sutton warned that a “public safety crisis” is coming as police officers leave the force in record numbers across the United States.

A transcript is as follows:

HARRIS FAULKNER: A retired NYPD sergeant warned this morning on the impact of anti-police sentiment. Here’s a quote: “Cops are forming a conga line down at the pension section and I don’t blame them. NYPD cops are looking for better jobs with other departments or even embarking on new careers.” […] We have talked all pandemic about the pressure on police officers. First COVID, then the protesting that turned violent. So much going on. What has them leaving now?

RANDY SUTTON: There is so much in play here […] The area I want to talk about right now is the psychological and the emotional injuries that are taking place, because they are part and parcel of why cops are leaving at record levels. And it isn’t just NYPD. It is quite literally every major city in the country. And I’ve been, you know, during our discussions previously, Harris, I forecasted a criminal justice crisis and it is barreling towards us. A public safety crisis is coming towards us like a freight train. And we are seeing this is just the beginning. I don’t want to sound like, you know, about the sky is falling, but the sky is falling.

I think there needs to be a massive resignation of bad cops.

Hopefully they see that the jig is up and they leave in droves.

The way things are going, we are going to lose a lot more good cops than bad cops. The good cops will find other employment either in security or in less crazy districts. The bad cops don't have as many options and will stick around as long as they can to collect a paycheck.

There is no "jig." They are out there risking their lives every day, and if they guess wrong one way they are dead and if they guess wrong the other way they are crucified. If that's your idea of a "jig" then you have a strange definition of the term.
