Renamed Buildings / Locations Announced (2 are sports related)
W&M has announced the changes from its review process. The story contains good explanations for the reasoning behind the changes; two are directly related to sports: https://www.wm.edu/news/stories/2021/wm-...alumni.php

Quote:The Arcade at Cary Field, the arched walkway at Zable Stadium that serves as its northern colonnade, will be named the Arthur W. Matsu Arcade after the university’s first known Asian-American student and William & Mary’s first “true gridiron hero.”

The board also voted to amend the name of Cary Field, which was named for T. Archibald Cary and his father, John B. Cary, who served as a Confederate officer. The name will now only refer to T. Archibald Cary.

Morton Hall will become John E. Boswell Hall, named for an alumnus, recognized scholar and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community.

Taliaferro Hall will become Hulon L. Willis Sr. Hall, named after the first African-American student to enroll at William & Mary.

Tyler Hall will revert to its previous name, Chancellors’ Hall, in honor of that role at the university and all those who have filled it, according to the resolution.

The board also approved the renaming of the university’s history department from the Lyon Gardiner Tyler Department of History to the Harrison Ruffin Tyler Department of History.

I am happy with these... I probably would've kept Tyler and identified that it was named only after the President, but he is also elsewhere on campus so I am okay with this.

I think W&M did a good job.

Really impressed by all of the committee's decisions. I think they got every single one right tbh. I particularly love the new Matsu Arcade at Zable.

Agreed, the Matsu one is a nice addition. I didn't even know that concourse area had a name, I hope they add some signage to help tell Matsu's story.

Actually, overall I think the school could stand to add more signage on a lot of the named buildings. If I'm being honest I know very little about Morton, Tailaferro, Boswell, or Willis.

Changing Tyler is stupid. People assume that the name refers only to John Tyler. Everything else is fine. Honestly the whole thing is virtue signaling...like anybody knew the background of Morton or Cary or Taliaferro when we were students. They were just names on signs. But if it makes people feel better about themselves I think it’s ok, with the exception of Tyler.

I agree. The College chose the easy targets for renaming and did not overreach. I'm also glad they renamed the buildings after men of undeniable character and not just big donors.

Looks like they did a good job. I, too, thought Tyler was named for the President.

I lived in Taliaferro Hall, as a Freshman. Usually, the inhabitants were the only ones that knew it was pronounced Toliver Hall.

I lived in Fauquier Hall. Pronounced Fo-key-aye nowhere else in America.

Ha! That is a common thread for the "How do you know if someone is a native Virginian?"

The test: Pronounce these locations:

Staunton - (Stanton)
Buena Vista - (B-U-na Vista)
Henrico - (Hen-RYE-co)
Weyers Cave - (Weighers Cave)
McGaheysville - (McGACKEYsville)

Only a "native" Virginian will get all 5. "Normal" people will get, maybe, 3.

"Nowhere else in America".

I use Norfolk as my test to determine whether someone is a Virginia native.

Hint: if you pronounce the second syllable with an "o" in it, you are not native born.

I also lived in Taliaferro as a Freshman. I spent tons of hours in Morton as a History major. They can names things anything they want but on football Saturdays I will continue to meet my buddy (also from Taliaferro) in the Morton parking lot before we walk to Cary Field. If I told him to meet me at Boswell then we would both get lost.

Indeed! I sent the article link to my Taliaferro freshman friend (who was from New Jersey) and this is what he said: "Most interesting. Thanks! Well at least if those changes had been in place in 1975, it would have saved me 45 minutes wandering around campus looking for Tali-a-fero Hall until someone finally realized, “Oh, you mean ‘Toliver’”! "

Fauquier here too!

Was quite the memorable experience as a freshman in almost every possible way imaginable including getting to meet and live with one of our fellow posters!

Those August/September days on the 3rd floor without an AC unit were brutal. Ended up getting a fan big enough and loud enough that I’m pretty sure could power a submarine to make it through.

I don't see it as much as rewriting history as I do actively selecting who the university wants to honor and feature. There is no rewrite, the history is known & documented.

I would almost argue in a lot of these cases it's rewriting history to not tell their story somewhere on campus. Like someone like Matsu faced an incredible amount of racism while at W&M, it's an ugly part of our history, but we shouldn't just ignore it and act like everything was peachy for all 300+ years

It is an ugly part of our present day IMO.
