RE: Transfer portal
big pickup for Toledo. Dennis joins castenada (south fla to akron) and gordon (samford to BG) as pretty high level pg transfers announcing a move to mac schools in the past week. all 3 are proven players.

To update Ball State's list...

Out: Ish El-Amin (Rhode Island), Boogie Coleman (Mizzou), KJ Walton, Zach Gunn
In: ...

(also out, but not in the portal but simply graduating, Brachen Hazen. Thus, the Cardinals are losing their top 4 scorers, 4 of their top 6 3pt% shooters, 4 of their top 6 rebounders.)

BG has 3 xfer guards coming in.
6-04, Samari Curtis from Evansville...3 years left. 10.1 points last year
6-03, Brenton Mills from Binghampton....2 years left. 13.9 points on 40.8% from the field and 40.2% from three last year.
6-03, Myles Gordon from Sanford...1 year left. 15.6 points on 46.6% from the field and 31.6% from three and 75% FT.

So far no word on any outgoing xfers.

The MAC is fast becoming a chuck-n-duck league. Pitiful.

his eyebrows have always been trouble, but it looks like his coaching career is dicey now too. truth is, lots of those guys gave him and ball st a sufficient chance to put it together. el-amin almost left last year but reversed course and gave the cards another shot. coleman was there 3 years. walton is gonna be a 7th year senior, i believe. hazen was there from year 3 to 5 in his college career. gunn was there 3 or 4 years... Cards always look capable and can make for a rough night for any mac program when they are clicking, but they haven't been able to put together a single really good season under whitford, even though the talent has consistently been pretty good.

I have seen nor heard anything that gives me the impression he's on the hot seat. I think it's all about money and Ball State has none. I really don't know if they are satisfied with what he's done. I'd hate to believe that they are. His record after the first two years is decent but outside of a couple of really nice wins, unremarkable. He has one year left so they are going to let him be dead man walking for a year which is not good or extend him a year and buy some time.

His teams are basically the same player, just varying degrees of height. They have no real identity and don't do anything particularly well. He loves to shoot the 3 but his teams don't do that well nor are they a good rebounding team either.

Eight years and what he has to show for it is 3 T-1st West champions and two CIT appearances which are pay to play. His MAC tourney record is awful, too.

Both D.Plowden and Trey Diggs returning for the extra year. If Matiss K. comes back healthy BG might be able to play small ball with Plowden and Matiss playing the 5 position.

The 3 xfer guards will replace JTurner and Davin Ziegler guard losses. Might be an interesting year for BG.

BG needs that matiss guy back healthy or should bring in an experienced bigger guy, i'd imagine. they got a recent trio of talented older guards. perhaps, they want to copy toledo and try to win the league playing all guards and small forwards.

ohio cleaned up in recruiting and still has another scholarship or 2, i think.

toledo is set. the two HS commits signed LOI and the rockets already signed 3 HS guys early. they add in a 3rd year transfer from boise and a 2nd year rs raheim moss who had multiple d1 offers in bball and football out of hs and will be one of the best athletes in the mac.

niu is working hard under the new staff. looks like their approach is more long term and player development than quick fix.

western's roster is still mostly in the red, but most of their more talented guys are back. they got open spots to fill...

buffalo is pretty stable. not sure if any of the seniors are using the extra year? jack is a good addition, and I think, practiced with the team the 2nd half of last season. they've been actively recruiting players lately.

ya give a little and they just want more

teams i follow less
akron has a pretty solid trio of freshman prospects. sekou sada kalle could be special. nate johnson should become a good mac player. the pg transfer from south florida (originally chicago) is talented. groce has a pretty good eye for guards.

miami is the rare team that is basically everyone coming back. no news there. 1 modest recruit as far as i can tell. their fate will lie with player and team development of the guys coming back.

kent loses a lot and still has scholarships to give. their 3 freshman seem a notch down from akron's, their pg transfer, sincere carey, was a good player on a winning team in the A10. his game should translate to the mac. they need some more firepower. sendy will need to land another impact transfer or juco or two to keep up with the top tier of the mac.

cmu and emu are incompletes. each roster is flux. i think stan heath will do some good things in ypsi. there's still some good transfers and recruits undecided out there. realistically, it's a transition year and emu focuses on landing a big 2022 class.

and then there is ball st, which is where every transfer thread hits its low this year.

RE: Transfer portal
This week Miami announced that Dalonte Brown and Precious Ayah were both returning for their extra year of eligibility, so our roster is basically intact. We lost Milos Jovic and Josh Brewer, two non starters whose playing time diminished greatly in the second half of the season. We gave one recruited walkon (Luka Eller) a scholarship, and signed a 6-7 forward ( Curtis Harrison) who could break into the forward rotation. I think we will move up in the standings as some of the teams above us lost key players, plus this group played well together and I think they push each other pretty hard to get better, something we did not have in the Owens era before last year.

I thought Javin Etzler showed some real offensive potential vs Toledo. Not sure he does a lot other than score, but he's good at that. I think Miami has to find a way to play bigger. Their guards are on the small side and they like to play 3 without a true big man. I'd think their ability to be more consistently competitive w good teams will require playing more than 2 guys over 6-2.

As far as MAC recruiting, Buffalo adds a probably the highest recruited freshman in the league so far. Kuluel Mading. tall skinny kid who can shoot and has a lot of potential. has showed up on 1 or 2 top 100 recruits lists and had a few P5 offers, tons of mid major interest, and was previously committed to Howard (which is signing some high level talent recently). not sure if he's strong enough to play right away but, if so, could give UB a shot blocker next to mballa on one end who can stretch the floor on the other.

overall, outside of ball st and and the unresolved coaching situation at cmu, the league is having a net improvement in talent in terms of recruiting and transfers.

Buffalo adds the rare JUCO Transfer with 4 years of eligibility remaining. 6’5 Guard Curtis Jones out of Indian Hills who also produced former UB stars Dontay Caruthers and Justin Moss. Averaged 12.1 PPG, 5.5 assists and 6 rebounds per game while shooting 38% from 3 in his lone JUCO year.

UB fans were hoping to fill out the roster with another guard and this appears to be a solid addition.
