That's me. From HS recruits to grad transfers, there are few decisions more momentous than where to go to college or where to continue playing/studying - maybe a decision to marry or to join the military, not many others. I respect the right of everybody to chart what they feel is the best course for themselves based on what they consider important to them for their present and future.

I would be sorry to see Nancy transfer, but if she thinks this is best for her, I hope it works out for her.

I think she's gone, but with how quick players are finding transfer destinations anybody who's even considering transferring should enter the portal to see who reaches out. Being in the portal doesn't mean you can't return, it just gives everybody your phone number.

Honestly, my unpopular opinion? I don't think it'd be a bad idea for Wiggins, Smith, Schwartz and whoever else to enter their name into the portal. See who wants you while good teams still have spots open. And then when we hire a coach, you can meet with them, and if you don't feel it's a good fit you have a better chance of finding a good landing spot.

Don't think that's all applicable to Mulkey - if I had a guess I'd say she's gone for good. But generally speaking the transfer portal door works both ways.

There's the primary reason why many of us have given up on college basketball. People like you keep presenting how wonderful it is for these players to have options, without giving equal time to the degree of selfishness and arrogance that are attached to those actions.

You seem to be well connected, and therefore you know that college coaches are actively recruiting players from other schools. No matter how much lipstick is worn, it's still a pig. "Freedom" for these athletes really means "freedom from accepting responsibility".

I think it is absolutely the main reason why so many of us have given up on Rice basketball - especially the older fans. Those of us who loyally followed Rice basketball for many years stayed committed to the program because we had players we knew would be there for four years. Even if we had a weak season, we could still cheer for the younger guys to get playing time and have legitimate hope that they would develop into strong players by the time they were seniors (e.g., Robert Johnson, Tommy McGhee).

Every once in a while we had a strong freshmen class that had lots of talent, which gave us legitimate hope that by the time they were seniors we could make the NCAA tournament. The last time that happened was when Jason McKrieth, Michael Harris, and Brock Gillespie were freshmen. Everybody could tell, by the time these guys were seniors, we could have a very special season - and we did. That continuity no longer exists in college basketball.

Never again did we have a group of guys stay loyal and play together at Rice for 4 years. I think that loss of continuity is the main reason our basketball program is dying. I think the younger fans never got to experience seeing core groups of Rice basketball players stay and play together for 4 years. Hence, they do not appear to be as frustrated with the constant transferring of players and current state of college basketball in general.

Payton Moore heading to Denver. He definitely should be able to play quite a bit for them. They weren't good last year - 2-19 and last place in the Summit League. But they have a new coach (from Stanford) so hopefully they'll be better next season.

Good luck to him.

Agree about Nancy, both in potentially following Tina and in her lack of strength. Trey should thank Rice and Pera for taking a chance on a player who had no interest from Virginia or other P5’s. He, like Drew and Malik, don’t get the chance to be in the bright lights without Rice or some other smaller program recruiting them. And once again let me say that players should have the right to transfer BUT it is a financial hit to Rice and any other G5 that loses one or more players each year and has to suddenly expand their budget to fill those holes.

And now UVA loses Trey after a year for the nba. I wonder where he will go when he leaves the nba after a year.

RE: MBB and WBB Offseason Tracker
Just realized the numbers in my original post were skewed. Completely forgot about the WNIT this year. In those two games against ASU and Ole Miss she shot 76.2% and averaged 9.5 rebounds and 6 blocks. If she can play like that consistently, then she can make any team in the country better. She's also 6-9 after all. Even if she struggles a bit more scoring and rebounding, very few coaches wouldn't take a 6-9 big who can play 10-20 minutes and protect the rim.

Hasn't been talked about yet, but Mulkey leaving creates a very significant position of need for us next year. Bellamy was the backup at the 5 this year, but I don't think you want her starting there next year. My guess is that Malia Fisher was recruited to either start or play significant minutes at the 5 in her first year. She's 6-2 and super athletic. But regardless of who we hire, I'd hope looking in the portal for a transfer big is one of the first things they do. Bellamy is undersized, McCurry struggled, and Fisher is an unknown. Can't go into next year hoping to make noise with that frontcourt.

Also, man, CUSA WBB has taken a serious hit this offseason. Much more so than the men. FAU lost one of the best bigs in the conference. FIU lost almost 90 minutes of contributors. MTSU lost the Hayes sisters. ODU lost 5 players including Victoria Morris. Rice is losing Mulkey and lost Langley. UTEP lost almost 100 minutes of contributors. UTSA lost two of its best players.

Could argue that Charlotte is the conference favorite if things unravel a bit more for us. 9-5 with three power conference transfers coming in.

If Egor could barely get a sniff from the NBA I don’t see Trey getting any interest.

Trey is probably doing the right thing - seeing what the evaluators say about him, and if it's a good, draftable range, then stay in.

But I'm like you, in that I don't think he really stands out that much to be draftable (than a random late second rounder - and no guarantees you go there) and will be back at UVA next year.

CBSsports.com has him at 47 on their draft list.

Howell is officially promoted to Assistant. The connection I hadn't seen is that he and Glasser were both on the 2006 HS team, coached by Pera, that won a state championship. Makes the staff extraordinarily young. Could be good, could be bad. No point in rehashing the points.

He was credited with working with the post players, especially Fiedler, this past season. Due to Covid off court personnel could participate in on court practices. Howell was the video coordinator this year.

If we don't get any other MBB players transferring, next year could be a special year for the team, maybe even 20+ wins.

A couple more big names leaving CUSA in Bryson Williams of UTEP (turning pro) and Jordan Shepherd of Charlotte (grad transfer).

As of today, I'd rank the top 3 in CUSA next year UAB, Louisiana Tech and Rice (in that order). But that could still change, depending on additional transfers (in or out), and also I haven't heard whether the two stud seniors at UTSA might consider coming back for their 5th years.

Yeah, I see UAB and Louisiana Tech as a class ahead of everybody. I do think we can be the third best team in the conference if our defense plays close to the level that we saw in the conference tournament (and our ceiling might even be higher depending on Hutchins and whether Ondigo ends up playing).

I think UTSA can probably beat anybody in the conference if Wallace and Jackson return. I fully expect McCasland to have UNT competitive. Same with WKU - Zion Harmon should come in and immediately be the best freshman in the conference.

One of UNT's assistant coaches (Nelson Haggerty) died tragically overnight in a car accident. RIP.

Mentioned this in the Edmonds thread but Wiggins is now in the transfer portal, though I'm not sure when exactly it happened or if there's a chance Edmonds could convince her to return. Not full panic stations yet - we still return three starters. But I wouldn't be opposed to dipping into the transfer portal for another guard and a big. Mulkey and Wiggins will not be easy to replace, and our bench was already a bit thin.

Also emphasizes getting a staff assembled quickly. Already close to 40% of transfers have found a new home.

Despite her scoring abilities in highs school, Wiggins was never much of an offensive contributor while at Rice, and she had a lot of turnovers. Her greatest value was in her defense. Should both Mulkey and Wiggins leave we lose our best two defensive players.

I think Wiggins was the clear QB on offense over the past two years, meaning her impact went well beyond the box score. In that sense, I think you're undervaluing her offensive contributions. But the broader point stands - Mulkey and Wiggins were two of our best players. The cupboard is not bare, and CUSA as a whole has taken a shellacking from transfers, but we need a few additions. Before Mulkey and Wiggins, it was a few additions wouldn't hurt. But I'd argue that prefer has shifted to need.

On the bright side, there are still plenty of good transfers left in the portal. And, though I have no actual evidence for this, the trend is typically that new coaches often have early success at getting impactful players that otherwise might not consider the coach's new school. The shiny object effect.

RE: MBB and WBB Offseason Tracker
Latara King was just named an assistant at Washington (along with an assistant from Oregon State - that's a nice get for Langley). But the other two Rice assistants didn't follow her to Washington. I wonder if Edmonds might retain one or both of them? Nolan Wilson would be my choice but either he or Steven Asher would keep some continuity.

My gut tells me King interviewed for the Rice job and wasn't offered it (and Langley was waiting on that to name her as an assistant on her staff). And that decision has made an impact on Wiggins. But again, it's not over yet. Let's see what happens.

Really? I always thought Smith was the primary ball handler, and she led the team in assists (though Wiggins wasn't far behind).
