I watched the game again and concentrated on DJ..he was bringing the ball up the court, hit an outside shot, blowing by defenders...etc showing his versatility.
He was showing them how much better they'd be... He wants to be needed instead of criticized by fans...I dunno. Sometimes the reasons are very simple.
Then the SEC is the worst conference he could go to... Go read some of their message boards...
lol It's hard enough reading one board.
Maybe they are promising DJ more playing time and he feels that's what's most needed for his continued development.

This just makes no sense to me. Came to Memphis, tons of opportunity, beats the pants off Miss State in to end the year, a game he played well in, and then transfer to Miss State. Why?
We have too much talent to keep him on the floor when his offense isn't clicking, and he's the kind of player who needs touches and shots to find his rhythm IMO. He's a poor man's Carmelo Anthony, and he will shine (though not necessarily win) on a team that lets him play through his bad shots.
Some kids are natural competitors who want to win more than anything, and some kids are playing for solely for business reasons. As for the latter, I can't fault them. There's a lot of money at stake, and not every program/system is a good fit for maximizing their value.
I think DJ could have shined here next year, but I understand why a program that wants to feature him as their #1 scorer and doesn't have a lot of competition for his minutes is likely a good opportunity for him.
You can say that about all of our players with the exception of Williams. None of them are consistent enough. We don't really need any of our guys to improve that much. They have the skills, they need to be more consistent. I think they will.

We do ourselves a disservice if we don't want him to succeed at Mississippi State.
I wish him and all the young men that have transferred well.

All the kids would have been better next year. It was just time to shake things up. It was obvious to get to the next level we needed a change. I think it will be a good change for all.

Yeah, a team that had come together, had figured out their roles, playing great basketball and won A NIT championship.....great time to shake things up.

Wish him well at Miss State and the next school he’ll try to transfer to next year. Sadly, he just isn’t a key player here and probably never would be. Hope he finds success...

Penny tried to feature him as the star early on in the season and he didn’t play well. Maybe he’ll do better elsewhere, but he was given the chance to be the man here and failed to take advantage of the opportunity.

Great take. You can tie the team struggle directly to DJ's play. In South Dakota, Penny ran every play possible for him, iso, dives to the rim, off pin down for 3's, post up on the box, or at the free throw line. DJ didn't produce. I think he couldn't handle the pressure as the first option.
DJ didn't want to play the 4 so Penny put in outside at the 3. He rebounds well, is a nice passer and is great on D, but he doesn't belong outside until he develops better ball skills. Go back to the Boise St game when the big man would switch on him, he couldn't get by him and settled for jumpers. Can't blame that on Penny. He did better in the Miss St game because he was showing out for his boys. I was hoping next year he would be more consistent but he can't blame Penny for his struggles. Still wish him well and enjoyed his time here.

He did play the NIT like he was auditioning. But does he think he’s going to play point guard for Ben Howland ?

DJ was AWOL about half the time here. And even so, he still put up decent numbers. If he can get his mind right & play every minute, he can be pretty good. Probably not as good as he thinks he is but a high level college player nonetheless.

The ball stopped moving on offense when DJ got it. He loved to clear out and drive... and sometimes it’s was really effective; but it just seemed like others stopped getting good shots when he was controlling the ball.

Yep he was definitely a one-on-one guy. That's said I don't understand the interest in replacing him with a guy who's was a sub avg 4 pts on 17 mins played, less than one asst, less than one steal, 3 rebounds & shooting 50% from the FT line. What's attractive about that? We've already been told by our self proclaimed experts that Baugh's production won't increase with more PT regardless of where he goes. Guess it just doesn't apply to Lawson. SMH, just don't see the attraction especially given the family track record of media drama in Memphis.

Maybe if Baugh goes from 20 minutes per game to 85 minutes per game, he will score double digits. Make sure you let us know how that works out.
DJ is being replaced by Timberlake.
