That would be news to the America East public schools. I don't think any of them, including Stony Brook, have the resources or political backing for an "arms race."

Stony Brook actually puts a lot of resources into athletics, they spend about as much as Toledo, and more than 8 MAC programs. If some sort of northeastern FBS option arose I think they would take it.

Stony Brook came into FCS years back with the goal of being FBS. They had all their admin in place pushing it, especially when they made the move from the Big South. Then all of those people moved on or retired and Stony Brook is still in FCS.

There is a zero percent chance that the powers that be in state government would ever allow Stony Brook to elevate at this point.

Having a team in the New York City area might be the ticket for them to go FBS. That would mean more visitors to spend money in the city.

SUNY Central or Albany pols don't really dictate athletic moves, Cuomo's veto of their stadium expansion funds notwithstanding. They could have been fit by if they hadn't, as Yosef noted, lost some AD staff, didn't sink money into baseball, IPF, a performance center, before spending on the least-expensive stadium expansion option.

Buffalo was invited to the MAC in July 1995, even with a 4-18 1-AA football record and 35-76 in low-major basketball return to D-1, and George Pataki became Gov. and cut SUNY funding. The MAC was expanding and wanted in NYS, gave UB a safe time-table, and all we had to do was spend on a cheap stadium expansion and sell 17K tickets. SUNY and Pataki didn't hold us back. If a league wanted SBU as badly, like Buffalo to MAC or Coastal Carolina for SBC, it is SBU's fault if they can't jump.

As for Hartford, they seem in better financial shape than many MAAC and NEC schools. So I'll believe it when it happens.

False.

"Units are awarded for each game played, minus the championship. A school can earn a maximum of five units for its conference in a single March Madness run. This year’s units carry a $337,141 annual value, according to the NCAA...Since units are paid out in annual distributions over a rolling six-year period, each one earned during the 2021 tournament will be worth a total of at least $1.68 million for the recipient conferences by the time it is fully paid out in 2027."

https://www.sportico.com/leagues/college...234625231/

You are assuming that the conference gives the credits primarily to the school who earned them. Some conferences do give a greater share to the school who actually earns the credits (e.g., MWC and even more biased the WCC) but many other conferences are share and share alike; meaning the conference shares the credits evenly among it's members (basically all the P5 are that way). If Harford is in a sharing conference then they would get not one dime more for going to the tournament than staying at home. In fact if they are in a share and share alike conference, then they would lose money compared to staying because they would have to pay for travel, the extra days of practice, plus usually sending an entourage with the team.

I mean, that is a big "notwithstanding." Moving to FBS would involve a stadium expansion, big investment of funds, more scholarships, etc. If an FCS sized stadium expansion can't get approval, an FBS stadium and FBS level investment is? I think the ship has sailed.

Stony Brook is not in New York City.

Also, in a normal year NYC brings in over 65 million tourists. An incredibly low level FBS team in the region would be like dumping a thimble-full of water into the ocean.

Yeah, because NYC is lacking in tourist attractions. I can imagine it now; a family of 4 checks in at their hotel and asks the concierge what they should prioritize. "Oh you GOTTA check out Stony Brook's football team. They beat CCSU last week and are playing UConn this week... yes, in football! And it's only a convenient 60 miles outside of the city!"

All I can say as a Stony Brook student/fan is that I am so embarrassed about our America East and FCS affiliations. It's so degrading.

And **** Cuomo.

If I'm a casual football fan going to NYC and want to see a game, do I 1) go 25 miles to a B1G game, 2) go to the north end of Manhattan for an Ivy League game 3) take the Staten Island Ferry to a NEC game, or r 4) go to the eastern end of Long Island for a Stony Brook game?

Rutgers is not in New York. New Jersey state would get the money for Big 10 football games.

The point is that Rutgers is closer to Manhattan than Stony Brook is.

No one has noticed a significant increase in tourist travel to the New York area from Rutgers joining the Big Ten, which has sizable, motivated, money-spending fanbases who are liable to take a trip to see the Buckeyes or Wolverines or Cornhuskers play at Rutgers, and make a weekend of it by doing tourist things in New York City.

Compare that to the idea of Stony Brook football increasing tourism to New York City, in a conference like the MAC. Those fanbases can't be arsed to go to home games, not to mention travel hundreds of miles to away games.

It's so strange how "Stony Brook to the FBS" was forecasted as a 100% guarantee a decade ago on sites like this. I shouldn't have read them when I was making college decisions.

The point is that Stony Brook can build a large stadium to be P5 could be attractive enough to join the ACC or Big 10 in the future since they are an AAU school. Same thing with Buffalo. The state of New York need a public AAU school in one of the P5 in the future. I think Stony Brook have the ceiling to go higher than FCS if they get there.

Indeed, the Big Ten was thinking more about the Big Ten alumni who had ended up on the East Coast than about fans from the Great Lakes and Midwest making tourist trips to NYC with a defeat of Rutgers to put the cherry on the sunday.

If that was the desire, SUNY would be putting more eggs in the Albany basket to get then to AAU status, establish that as their true flagship, and build a FBS stadium there, since it would be the best location to reach the most NYS residents within A 4 or so hour drive due to its location..

I know I was spreading that stuff around like it was the gospel, but, it had all the looks of an upgrade about to happen at the time. You had the big fundraising campaign, the infrastructural upgrades to the arena and football stadium (and training facilities), and you had the language in the campaign that spoke to a bigger forum and setting for Stony athletics. Couple that with things like the school’s still increasing academic reputation and the blockade experienced in CAA to support growing and looking past the region.

Well, that balloon certainly popped. Meanwhile, if someone had Coastal Carolina...winner winner.

Stony Brook and Colorado State both swung and missed on their campaigns. But, at least Colorado State was still able to get the stadium through. Stony got Cuomo’d. But, with both, it showcased the lack of overall interest/support for big athletics at these schools.

That would be news to the America East public schools. I don't think any of them, including Stony Brook, have the resources or political backing for an "arms race."

I think there’s a pronounced level of spending, building, and commitment there to at least stand over the likes of NEC and MAAC. I wouldn’t say there’s a war with CAA, but, some attempt to keep up? Yes. The CAAF members have certainly made commitments over the last 10-15 years with their football infrastructure. UM-L and NJIT had to exhibit something for their invites.

On the hoops side, you’ve had projects over at Vermont and UMBC, with Binghamton’s arena still holding up (despite it being near irrelevant in basketball).

And Stony’s campaign and Maine’s recent big gift go without saying. There’s a pulse in America East that can’t be said of the other New England D1 conferences.
