Nick Van Exel, scout for Mavericks: One source lobbed this name to me a few days ago when we were discussing the inevitability of UC opening. The fan base would likely love it. He's an alumnus. If he wants it, well, there probably wouldn't be a hire that would create more immediate momentum.

Darren Savino, UCLA assistant: Longtime Mick Cronin assistant who just helped bring UCLA to a dream Final Four run. Cincinnati was an NCAA Tournament regular when Cronin and Savino were there. He was passed over for the job two years ago. Had he not been, UC would not be in the spot it finds itself in now.

Dennis Gates, Cleveland State coach: Gates' name was connected to Penn State, Minnesota and DePaul. All those jobs filled and Gates is still the head coach at Cleveland State. Hard to see how he's not in the mix here, though. A young coach destined for a bigger job eventually, maybe this will wind up being fate. Gates inherited a disaster at CSU two years ago and got the Vikings to the NCAAs this year. It would be negligence to not give him a long look.

Scott Nagy, Wright State coach. Cincinnati could easily look in-state and see the coach at Wright State who's both as qualified and has more wins to his name than anyone else who should be considered for the job. The 54-year-old Nagy has a 519-289 record across his time at South Dakota State and Wright State. He's unassuming, but ideal. He also better get a call.

Richie Riley, South Alabama coach: Riley is from the Cincinnati area and is 54-39 in his past three years running that program. Not a huge name, but someone who's a fixer. This situation is in need of fixing.

Ritchie McKay, Liberty coach: McKay has received a bump in buzz in recent years because he's guided the Flames to three consecutive ASUN championships. He has a history in coaching at the power-conference level and might eventually get one more crack at a bigger gig.

Norlander's Top 7

After Miller, what a lackluster list. Sad that the national media thinks that's where UC is as a program, and even sadder that it may be correct.

Gates has been a huge success here in Cleveland. It would take huge stones to hire another Horizon League coach.

That's it's a pretty accurate assessment given where we are. Any hot name is likely to sit us out or give us a courtesy intv to see what the market is like for them. We are looking at mid-major HCs or 2nd life former HCs/assistant coaches carrying some baggage. i would love to be surprised but i am doubtful.

Sorry kind sir but that's highly unlikely. I'll reserve final judgment, but I don't see how the AD comes out looking like anything but a turd in over his head. I'm with Luke - the whole thing seems like BS including the process based upon everything I've seen. Refusing to talk to the HC at one of your premiere sports (even to the point of reportedly locking yourself in your office)? Costing the Athletic Department millions of dollars it desperately needs? Potentially alienating the guy who has become the face of the University based upon both his success and integrity?

Cunningham has dug himself into a canyon-sized hole. I'm more inclined to throw dirt into it than helping him out by trying to rationalize a way to call this a success.

My guy has been and will remain Dane Fife.

Yeah i get it that he's lurking for the IU or MSU job, but he looks like the BB version of Fickell to me and I would at least pick up the phone.

Archie Miller and Bryce Drew seem a lot like Dave Leitao and Tubby Smith.

(Tubby wasn't a horrible coach, but after leaving UK he only made the NCAA 4 times and never made the Sweet 16 in 11 years at Minnesota, Texas Tech, and Memphis).

Anthony Grant count?

I would disqualify any candidate that is represented by the same attorney who works for John Brannen.

Also, as a bargaining chip, tell prospective candidates that UC is willing to fire the AD if need be since he’ll might be an impediment to hiring the right coach.

Lastly, we should be willing to trade Pinto for an assistant professor to be named later. From where I sit, he is the main impediment.

BTW, it’s a good thing that I’m not cynical.

Who will do the hiring? When will we hire a good President?

Williams screwed up handling during BE melt down. Nasty Z destroyed BB by handling of Huggins situation. Ono was a refreshing leader. Dr. Bean has done nothing good for athletics.

I don't have a lot of confidence in the folks handling this decision, but this could make the job more desirable if true:

We'd actually have a talented base to build upon.

I'd take Eason and Saunders back.

Madsen... eh, I don't know. To paraphrase Bob Knight, what good are you doing us scoring 20 if you give up 30 at the other end.

If I had a choice between the 2 Millers, I'd take Sean. I always thought he was the best X's and O's coach since Skip Prosser. Better than Matta, Mack and Steele.

Savino would be a lazy hire and screams mediocre.

I'm warming to Gates.

I haven’t heard where the FBI has backed off in their investigation of paying players 100’s of 1,000’s of dollars. Generally speaking, the FBI doesn’t get involved in investigations unless they feel very confident that they will get a conviction. The most sacred thing for the FBI is their conviction rate.

Would you truly want to advocate for Sean Miller?

I’ll support the new hire regardless. Having said that, please no Archie or Savino. Archie is Mick Lite. He can’t coach offense and I don’t want to go back to hoping for 60 points with a defense that isn’t near Mick’s level. If the best thing you can say about him is that he’s 42 he isn’t the guy to win you a national title.

I think Savino is a great assistant that deserves a lower level head coaching job. I do not want the right-hand man of the guy that sold this program short for a decade plus running things. I want nothing to do with that style of play and timid recruiting philosophy.

These guys all have warts. There’s no obvious choice. All I know is that NBA and offense sells and wins games. Give me the guy that was a 1st rd pick, spent 6 years in the NBA, and can relate and recruit at a high level. I’ll take Bryce Drew.

All three would be upgraded over the last staff. I believe it will be Archie until I see something otherwise. He is my top choice too. I am not sure anyone is a home run but you have to be able recruit and have head coaching experience.

Archie has won a higher level than Drew and his worst seasons are still way better than Drew. Basically always in the 75 of Kenpom every year of his career. At Cincinnati if you are around 30 to 75 Kenpom you are going to be top 3 in the American and most likely in the tournament every season. I am not sure we have a single candidate that has proven they can take the program to new places but a lot of the candidates can stabilize the program.

I am not too excited about dipping into the mid major/low major ranks again or giving someone their first head coaching job.

RE: Hiring the next hoops coach
I don't hate any of the candidates I've seen thrown out. I think (as I've said before) that the former players burned any chance for Erik Martin to come back when they came out and called the guys transferring soft. Does anyone really think Mikey and Eason are going to come back to play for Erik Martin?

Archie feels like the safe, cheap, obvious hire. But he also feels like a downgraded Mick Cronin. We can feel pretty confident that with him we will be top 3 in the AAC and rarely #1. He's the guy you hire if you want to be good, but not great.

For Bryce Drew, you gotta ask what went wrong at Vandy? If there is a good, convincing answer I'm okay with him. If not, then I'll pass.

After that, it's a huge mix of guys (mostly up-and-comers) who have something lacking in their resume. At least a few of those guys are going to become great coaches, the pick is choosing which one and also one who isn't going to bail for greener pastures in year 4 if he is successful.

RE: Hiring the next hoops coach
I don't believe we should be focused on a "name" coach or who is the "safe" bet or who will stabilize the program. I want the best guy to lead our program back to prominence regardless of his name or head coaching background. Again, Bob Huggins came from Akron and Mick from Murray St. A lot of folks weren't initially enamored with the Luke Fickell hire. To me, in the current climate of COVID and player interaction/support/edification and being a leader of young men - that part of coaching has to play a big factor. That is one area that Big Fick excels at [among many others]. This is why you have an interview and evaluation process. So, you lay out your criteria as an example [no particular order]:

Experience
Results
Recruiting
Connections
Player Development
Player Relations
Compliance
References
Player Grad Rates
University/Community Involvement
Passion for the UC Brand

You may assign weights or emphasis to each one. Interview. Evaluate. Hire the best guy. Period. If we make a second hire that fails it will be catastrophic to the program IMO. A much bigger hole to dig out of. As I posted upstream, this is a chance to see what we got in our AD's hiring chops.
