Indiana St blew out #16 Oklahoma by 21 and beat #5 Arkansas and #6 DePaul.

Answer seems obvious.

Indiana State also won at Purdue by 10 points in November to open the season. Purdue ended the season #15 and tied with Michigan State as regular season Big 10 champs.

RE: The '79 ISU Sycamores
A few years prior to Indiana, NC State was 27-0 but was on a year's probation with Duke over the recruitment of David Thompson. (Bill Guthridge at UNC orchestrated that, but that's another story).

That 72-73 team was better than the the 73-74 team that went 30-1 and ended UCLA's streak. At that time in the ACC both MD and UNC had top 5-10 talent, MD especially. Anyway, had NC State been eligible they would have likely been undefeated going into the Final Four game with UCLA - semi finals or finals.

Going undefeated, even in an average conference is an accomplishment. Doing it back when the game was played with skilled seniors is probably more difficult than it is now because you would face teams that knew how to win with less talent.

To be honest Baylor probably should have been undefeated this year and physically it was no contest. UCLA was not going to beat Baylor either.

More of an AAC type conference at that time where a Top 25 team was realistic for most members.

The Valley was always a formidable basketball conference.

Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Kansas State, Cincinnati, Louisville, Memphis, Tulsa, Creighton, Houston and Wichita State are all former members of the conference.

I still enjoy watching The Valley when I can catch a game.

Yes, and its rating was a smidgen behind SWC (-0.09)/Metro (-0.19) and quite a bit ahead of the Eastern-8 with Villanova/Pitt/WVU (+3.20).

22-10 (11-5) got an at-large bid.

By no definition was it a soft conference.

Incidentally, New Mexico State was the team with the at-large bid from the MVC in 1979. The MVC was not a bad conference at all.

Indiana State in 1979 was very good. I'm not sure if they would have gone undefeated in another conference, but they would have won most, if not all of them. As mentioned above, they defeated the champions of the Big 8 and SWC on the way to the Final Four.

I can't believe that was 42 years ago. I'm getting old.

Yeah, it's really sad when something happened long ago and you vividly remember it, LOL. My family was traveling from Maryland to New Jersey for a relative's funeral, and we arrived out our hotel just in time for tip-off and watched the game on the hotel room TV. Not only do I remember watching, but feeling disappointed, as we were all big Larry Bird fans and were rooting for IST.

We were won over to Bird by the Final 4 game vs Depaul with Ray Meyer and Mark Aguirre. That was a fantastic Final 4 game, one of the best ever.

At some point you vividly remember stuff that didn't even happen the way you remember. That's even sadder. 04-cheers

Scott May broke his arm on February 22, 1975

That was Syracuse's first Final Four. Boeheim was Roy Danforth's assistant. Danforth was a VG coach but killed his career moving to Tulane.

IU did have great teams then...if BK could have kept Larry Bird happy they might have won another natty or two back then.

The games were bigger then...so few were nationally televised back in the 70s. They were events.

I still remember Memphis State playing UCLA in the F4

The 92-90 IU/UK game I had to watch the ticker on as it was daytime and I couldn't get it on the radio in Texas.

Outside of Kemba, Shabazz Napier and Carmelo I can’t think of one star teams that have won it all in the last 20 years. Certainly no players with the disdain for strength and conditioning that Bird and Bradley have.

They don’t have to win it all. They just have to be a contender. Larry Bird carried Indiana St to within one game of a national title. Stephen Curry carried Davidson to within one shot of the Final 4 — and then Davidson had some PG from like Barrington take that shot.

In the early 70s they talked of the MVC being the first superconference. Of course, Louisville, Memphis and Cincinnati all left by 79. But Drake and New Mexico St. had been in the finals in the 60s and were still in the MVC.

Drake was in the Final Four in 69 and Elite 8 in 70 and 71. Ironically New Mexico St coached by legendary Lou Hansen beat Drake in that elite 8 game to go the final 4...
