We were in 2 different conferences(sun belt and colonial) where we had chances at multiple bids. Now we are in a non-exciting low level basketball conference. I remember them getting multiple bids when Memphis was in cusa. I feel that we used to get good recruting classes in the past and worked them into really good players. I understand why we went to cusa for football but we need to stop settling for mediccrity, recruit better or get back into a conference with multiple bids. VCU has a decent season, they get invited to the dance. Heck,we don't go to NIT anymore or any other of those mediocre tournaments that we have won. BT was aggressive, Pw was great into turning low level recruits into NBA level talent. We did not settle for mediocrity with TY and JC,why are we settling now. I feel like we are being passed by. This is freaking ODU,which was once a school people did not want to play. We lost to Bobby Knight and Indiana by 1 point as a division 2 school and used to regularly beat georgetown, syracuse and a lot of highly ranked and thought of teams and wsed to stand toe to toe with uva and by in basketball and were VCUs equal or better. I remember sold out games at scope and the ted. I know we can't have crowds right now but attendance was dwindling before this. Mr. Selig and coach Jones please bring our ODU basketball back to where it belongs. This is heartbreaking to watch.

Sold out games at Scope???? When I was in school you could hear a pin drop at scope. The only games that sold out were UVA and UNC. And again, except for a few years the Colonial was a one bid league and once it got good, everyone bolted for greener pastures. We just selected the wrong farm to graze in.

I went to school in 80s and we sold out for uab james madison vcu or had huge crowds. I forgot when TY was coach interest went away. The point is why can't we be relevant again?
Football should not have anything to do with it other than sticking us in a crappy conference. The level of play is way down. We need new blood. If JJ is a bad recruiter or he does not like new players, he will never be able to go with the new era of transfers. If he waits for newcomers to contribute by giving them limited minutes, they will just transfer. Come on,let's not settle.

I don't wholly disagree with you, but JJ has not been coaching for all the year he has becasue he sucks. Recruiting falls mostly to the assistant coaches, and maybe like BW, in football, his commitment to his guys (assistant coaches) rather than bringing in someone new maybe holding us back but who really knows. I figure JJ has one more year then he is either let go or retires. If he brings in a couple of good transfers that have 2 or three years of eligibility left, things could turn around real quickly. And then we will be talking about Maleik Curry like we did about Tre Porter in that he left for greener pastures that were not necessarily greener.

What? He was the coach at a top 10 program when he started his career. He then went on to American for like 20 years because nobody wanted him until Wood threw him a lifeline after a 6 win season there. Coaches that have coached at top 10 programs, gone to the elite 8, and have vast name recognition are not mired at American for 20 years if they are great coaches. Coaches also are not stuck at ODU for 10 years with no offers to go elsewhere unless they have serious baggage, which JJ does not, if they are great coaches. If the people who actually evaluate coaches thought of JJ as highly as you do, he would not be at ODU.

I never said he was a "GREAT" coach, I just said you don't stick around as a head coach for 30+ years if you suck at your job.

Syracuse game about 3/4 full. We got decent seats as walk ups for that game.

I thought the thread was about men’s basketball. Hence my only sell out comment was UNC. I think we only averaged (season wise) above 7K a few seasons when at Scope

Women’s game against the russkis was a sell out. I sat right at mid court 3rd row behind the scorers table. I could hear Nancy say, “where Annie?” Alexandra Semanova completely blocked her view. She was 7’2” 250 lbs. Anne Donovan was 6’ 8” and 160. I could see her fine but the big girl blocked Nancy’s view. And she kept moving to keep herself between Nancy and Anne as much as she could when we were coming up the court.

Yes, I was there for both of those games as well. 7-foot-2 Uljana Semjonova made both 6'-8" Anne Donovan and 6'-5" Inge Nissen look very small next to her.

I thought the UVA game at Scope in about 92 sold out. I know we tried to sell out the JMU game that year, and they made a big marketing push to do it, but fell short. 9,000+ were there though.

Ok folks, FYI~I looked it up for you. 1993 vs JMU. We had 9296 fans in attendance. Keith Jackson had 33 points, 8-10 from 3 point land. Petey Sessoms had 32 points,7-9 from 3 point land.We won 92-88. Curious, Odell finished with only 6 points. They beat us earlier at JMU 102-89 btw. Both teams were very good then. Madison played some schedule that year. Auburn,La Sale, Penn State,Oregon State California,Seton Hall and George Washington.

That same year we played:
UNC, lost 119-82
Iona
Virginia, Lost 90-68
Alabama- WON 93-91 at Scope
Auburn,lost 96-85

Those were better days Mac. I miss ODU teams having guys like Odell, Petey, and Keith Jackson. When's the last time ODU had 2 guys combine for 15 of 19 shooting from 3 in a big game? Mike Jones was another guy that played with Petey that could shoot pretty good.

Yes sir, quality dudes! I remember after that game seeing Jackson interviewed on one of the TV stations and being fired up by both their performances. Great game that one was.

And btw, have I ever mentioned that Petey Sessoms should most certainly have his jersey hanging from the rafters by ODU?

Football enhanced interest in basketball. ODU attendance leads the conference. Before we had FB the lament was that basketball season never really started until the Redskins season was over. Our BB is mediocre because of who leads it and the fact his boss is AOK with mediocrity.

This is complete bs aside from the last sentence. I challenge you to show a single data point that even remotely reinforces your assertion.

Here's some data points (per Wikipedia) for you. Pre-FB (02/03 - 08/09) avg. BB attendance was 6,225. Post FB avg. attendance (09/10 - 19/20) is 6,708. Peak avg. BB attendance of 7,123 occurred in the 4 year period beginning with the first FB year (09-10). The best year for avg BB attendance was 7,745 in 10-11. Attendance is tailing off a bit but IMO that's because fans are growing tired of JJ's boring, grind it out style of play. Even if people bought BB season tics to get FB tickets, that supports my argument that FB enhanced support for BB. If FB detracted or diluted BB support, avg. attendance would be less after the pre-FB average. What is so glaring now about BB attendance is the almost complete absence of students at the games. During the BT era, the student section roared. Now it looks like study hall.

Yep, student engagement likely peaked in 2004-2006. Even the 10-11 year didn't come close to matching that from that perspective. I'd be interested in seeing the attendance numbers from the perspective of tickets scanned (butts in seats) vs tickets sold. There were lines around the Ted an hour before the games and people buying and selling tickets everywhere outside of the box office in those days. None of that has happened since. I find it impossible to believe actual attendance is up.

One of their players said, “we know them and what they’ll do. We’re not worried!”

I just find it funny how everyone then talked about Webb like everyone does about Jones. Took us a long time to recover from the Webb removal.

You may not like Selig, but I’d never want to go back to Jarrett.

Seems like the game against Syracuse was a full house. The Lady Monarchs exhibition game against the Russian National Team did as well.

I was there at the NCAA game against Wake Forrest. I rode the bus ODU provided to the game.

I couldn't find the attendance for this game but it sure looks full here!

And check out these stats for the Monarchs, what a balanced team. Finished 25-5, the glory days for sure.

Ronnie Valentine 18.5 ppg, 8.7 Rebounds
Ronnie McAdoo 14.4ppg, 7.3 Rebounds
Tommy Branch 9.5 ppg 3.0 Rebounds
Bobby Vaughn 9.2 ppg 2.5 Rebounds
Grant Robinson 7.8 ppg 2.5 Rebounds
Billy Mann 7.3 ppg 2.3 Rebounds
Mark West (Freshman) 4.8 ppg 7.1 Rebounds

The rest of the squad were all around 2.0 ppg. We had three 6'10" players. West, Kragtwijk(became pretty damn good) and Griekspoor (didnt play much)
Grant Robinson 7.8 ppg 2.5 rebounds

I agree Mac. Here's another nice video from ODU's glory days. I remember the team unity being displayed where most of the players shaved their heads. That's a far cry from the crazy hairdos we saw during this last NCAA Tournament.
