You are the new FBS Commissioner and have been given authority to rewrite future FBS schedules (sounds like most of our threads).

BUT,

You have to make the schedules fair (or, fair enough). Winning percentage must be the first determiner for any standing, rank, postseason, etc. For example, 12-0 Liberty should look better (or, luckier) on the field than 11-1 Virginia Tech.

How do you build that schedule while (a) keeping existing rivalries frequent and (b) preventing teams from traveling cross-country every other week.

Assume also “130” may fluctuate year to year as new “FBS standards” are implemented.

Conference schedule isn't relevant if there is only one conference. Of course, if there is only one conference then there really are no conferences, and every school schedules as if they were independent.

I think you are trying to dictate equal strength of schedule for all teams from Alabama to Alabama Birmingham, from Ohio State to Ohio U, from Florida and Florida State to Florida Atlantic and Florida International. Good luck with that. The NFL, NBA, and MLB can't do it on a regular basis and they're 30-32 team leagues, you want to do it with 130 teams and schools of different sizes and levels?

Of those 3 pro leagues, only the NFL actually tries to schedule based on strength, and that's just 2 games out of 16 (will be 3 out of 17).

Probably go to regional conferences and everyone has 6 home and away games. You could get North Texas hosting Texas or FAU hosting Florida State. "Conference" games are capped at 9 games. With 3 out of region games.

I mean, from a math perspective, a balanced schedule it's not "that hard."

You use some kind of initial system to rank everyone 1-130 and just draw a line every 11 schools to create tiers: 1-11 in Tier A, 12-22 Tier B, etc. Within each tier, everyone's ranked 1 to 11 already.

So chart it out: The #1 teams each tier play each other, the #2 teams play each other, etc. All the way down. Then you kind of manually adjust for geography as best you can. Just as long as everyone has one opponent from each tier.

Schedule Pod 1: Alabama, Iowa, LSU, Auburn, Tennessee, Arkansas, Tulane, Rice, Kent State, South Alabama, So Miss, Vandy
Schedule Pod 2; Clemson, UNC, Army, NC State, Kentucky, Va Tech, Maryland, Miami OH, Charlotte, Navy, South Carolina
Schedule Pod 4: Texas A&M, Texas, Utah, TCU, SMU, UTSA, La Tech, Texas Tech, North Texas, Baylor, Texas State
Schedule Pod 7: Oklahoma, Okla St, Indiana, UAB, Colorado, Air Force, Missouri, Fresno St, Colorado St, Illinois, UTEP, Kansas

You get the idea.

I feel like I may not understand the question, but oh well here I go.

Set up 12 geographic divisions of 11 teams each. Each division plays 10 round-robin schedule against each other. Each team also plays 2 games against other divisions, and then make sure every division has a team that is playing at least 1 game against every other division.

Then have the 12 division winners and 4 at-large teams play in a 16-team playoff.
