They had 10 members up until Loyola left for the Patriot, and then they added Monmouth and Quinnipiac to make 11. And Loyola announced their departure before the other two were invited. Perhaps there was a 3rd new school they had hoped to add? Or maybe an uneven number of members just doesn't bother them.

The rumors I saw at the time had Wagner as the 12th.

Correct—Wagner got cold feet when they found out their football would be homeless and/or would have to hook up with the Big South and add more scholarships.

Interesting. There's always the Pioneer League though. I realize that means no FBS body bag game income, unless the Pioneer permits some scholarships.

Wagner's AD, who is still there, was also the football coach at the time. He prevailed upon his administration not to accept the MAAC offer.

RE: New Haven to D1?
The reason New Haven wants to move up is to use D1 as a tool to get noticed to draw students in. This is by 2029 when there will be less new students to enroll. D2, D3 and NAIA don't have the media rights that D1 conferences have.

No one questions that New Haven wants to move up. Everyone questions what conference would be remotely interested.

That's a laughable argument. Arkansas Tech grew from 3,000+ to nearly 10,000 (Russellville only) all as a D2 school and we didn't have any media rights either. Plenty of D1 schools have had declining enrollments over the last few years; Chicago State and central arkansas to name two. You want to attract more students: improve your academics and get off your backside and recruit students.

I'm sure D3 schools like MIT and Johns Hopkins, who are pretty close to never seen on TV, really struggle to attract a large amount of applicants worldwide.

When has Bentley done a study for D1. Just because their men's hockey is D1 does not mean they have a desire to move all sports to D1.

It's been pushed out there they were considering it. When their last AD retired, the school created a new five-year/strategic plan. The language and goals aren't necessarily sure-fire hits on the school moving up, but, the hiring of Vaughn Williams from BC after Williams was the guy who transitioned Kennesaw State only stoked the coals that Bentley was/is up to something.

Hold on there JUST a minute, pardner, Johns Hopkins has sports media exposure for its Division 1 Men's Lacrosse program, through both a contract for its home game and through its away games in conference airing on the Big Ten Network.

But MIT, I admit, it's a puzzle. Maybe being ranked the #4 University in the world on the AWRU rankings, #5 in the world on the Times Higher Education rankings has something to do with that, but it's still a puzzle.

MIT is the #1 or #2 US Tech school (Cal Tech the other). In Silicon Valley, NASA and elsewhere it's recruiting stop #1. You know, if you want a starting salary of $180,000 or more.

Oh I know about JHU men's lax, that's why I said close to never. I have seen some of their games (usually vs Denver or Syracuse and in the NCAAT) but I haven't seen any other JHU sports on TV.

M.I.T. does have a sport in D1 as well. So does CalTech.

LOL, water polo and for MIT women's rowing. These sports only have a single championship so non-scholarship D-II compete in the same division as D-II and D-I. That is not the same as a D-I scholarships sport.

MIT Rowing does compete in D1 but water polo is classified in the National Collegiate Division, therefore CalTech does NOT have a sport in D1.

The point still stands; how many times have you seen MIT on TV and yet there is still a high demand to attend the D3 school that happens to have D1 Rowing.

Maybe they don't want to have to worry about Title IX.

Maybe they don't want to have to worry about Title IX.

There is that ... since they have a very high tuition, but the typical student (except for donation enrollments) can be assured they will pay what they can afford to pay and the rest will be covered by some form of grant or scholarship, the "scholarship opportunities" for all athletes are identical and all Title IX would requires is an appropriate balance of places for their M:F 55:45 ratio.

I'm still thinking that somehow being considered among the top five Universities in the world creates a situation regarding gaining public profile that is somehow a little different from the situation faced by New Haven. I know that being world famous and instantly recognizable by might not seem that critical an issue regarding a University's public profile, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it plays a big enough role to change the parameters of the decisions made by the respective Universities.
