Fight to make cheer a varsity sport

Nor sure if cheer will qualify under NCAA as a varsity sport anymore?
Yeah I think there was actually a SCOTUS ruling on that.

I have noticed however that some schools, JMU specifically, use large wbb practice teams full of male players to help Title IX balance. I know we had an all men's practice squad under Coach Taylor (players had to give up their NCAA eligibility and everything) but Coach Swanson got rid of it.

Maybe the second team can compete in DIII. Or even NAIA.

Do the rules preclude transgender athletes on a practice team?

There have been transgender student-athletes. I recall my local sports talk radio hosts talking about a women's basketball player at GW who identified as a man during [insert appriate pronoun here] athletic career.

There would be a lawsuit in NY second if the NCAA refused to except [insert appriate pronoun here] identified sex so...

I'm a huge MMA fan and individuals who were born male currently compete in women's MMA. Same for wrestling, strength sports, and track.

It's not a silly question.

Felt like a silly question in the context of using practice players to comply with Title IX. But I understand the desire to flesh out the legality and all of its nuances.

RE: W&M Cuts 7 Sports
Everybody root for the Tribe Women's Swim Team today (Wed). It is the last day of the CAA Championship and I hear that it is available on CAA-TV. W&M is currently in second place behind JMU but has been coming on strong in the swimming events. As most of you know, the Tribe has no diving team and so we always start the swimming events already behind in the standings.

Swimming might be W&M's best chance to actually win a CAA championship this year. Cross Country lost for the first time in 20 years. Women's tennis is facing competition this year, and Field Hockey doesn't seem as good as usual (hard to tell with only 2 games played; Hofstra has played 8 and NE 6).

NOTE: There has never been a year (going back to the beginning of the CAA in 1983-1984) where William & Mary has not won at least one championship. There were only four years ('85-'86, '86-'87, '88-'89, and '98-'99) where the men didn't win at least one; fortunately, the women covered each of those years (in fact, the women won 81 and the men 49 through '17-'18 (the last year the league office has bothered to update (wasn't that about the time Joey D came aboard?))).

What in the world happened with the 800 Free Relay yesterday? From the CAA website:

800-Yard Freestyle Relay
The final event of the night did not have a final decision as of the end of Day Two. The meet officials are studying data and no final decision will be made until Wednesday morning. The official team standings will be updated at that time.

Based on the heat sheet, it looks like W&M would have been favored to win -- I hope there's not a questionable DQ.

Going to the Supreme Court for a final ruling?

The Supremes must have spoken -- W&M now listed as the winner of the 800 Free Relay.

RE: W&M Cuts 7 Sports
While I still think the number of sports WM offers is unsustainable (unless we want an underfunded, non-competitive basketball program as we've had for most of time), I never really understood the argument for Stanford. You are one of the richest schools in the world with a $28 billion endowment and rolling in money, you really need to save $8 million a year? The 11 cut sports already had a $23 million endowment just for them, which it wouldn't surprise me if that dwarfs the endowment for our entire athletic department.

RE: W&M Cuts 7 Sports
It just goes to show that financial hardship is NOT the real reason behind these cuts (and I think that is true for W&M also). Clemson gets College Football Playoff money plus P5 ACC money and yet they want to cut track because of financial hardship? Yes, they do want to save money but they want to save it to divert it to the football program. If there wasn't an NCAA rule mandating each Div. I school sponsor at least 13 or 14 programs then I think most of these schools would only sponsor 4 or 5 sports (and as few women's sports as they could possibly get away with).

Supporting women's sports and Olympic sports is one reason why I applaud (and financially support) W&M's broad-based program.
