@CBB_Central
Figger was entering the last year of his contract and coming off a somewhat disappointing year, so not a bad idea to bounce laterally to UTRGV. Says a lot about what Lew Hill did there that they could pull a sitting HC. The new WAC continues to get stronger. Figger finished over .500 in each of his four seasons at APSU and won 20+ games twice. A lot of high-level assistants in the southwest were interested in this one, but UTRGV opts for experience instead.
Could pay off for UTRGV longterm.

RE: UTRGV HC Opening
Figger was feeling some heat at AP. He did well there but could not get over the hump. Next year he would have been w/o OVC player of the year who is going pro. Stiil a bit of a head scratcher. He could have recruiting connections in Texas I am not aware of since he was at Odessa 2000-2002 and Kansas State 2007-2012. And no offense but overall the AP job is slightly better IMHO. AP does have a little NCAA tourney history, better attendance, and OVC has had a few good years although I think the WAC will now catch or pass them up.

Pretty impressive that UTRGV could land a current sitting D1 HC.

Need some confirmation once the dust settles, but sounds like he was completing a four-year contract and probably set to figure out what the future was in the short-term. This could end up being a win-win for UTRGV & WAC men's basketball on many fronts.
Will be curious what this means for the Lamar search and what they end up particularly since there was at least one or two sitting men's basketball coaches (including one in the Southland) that was mentioned.
Could be a sign that people within the profession view WAC basketball as a step above the Ohio Valley, Southland of the world which is what we want.

The university sent out the official e-mail to faculty and students about half an hour ago, as WACfan87 posted in UTRGV sub-forum.
I agree that he looks like a qualified pick and it says something that he's quitting an OVC school with some NCAA history to come to the WAC and UTRGV.
On the other hand, it would be nice to know whether the mass exodus of our best players happened before or after they knew who the next coach would be. If all the people who signed up in the transfer portal actually make it out, we'll be starting essentially from scratch. So far zero commit announcements. It's also been a long long time since UTRGV brought in a real freshman on scholarship.

Sounds like the new UTRGV coach is pulling a Shaka Smart with leaving before getting fired. UTRGV made a nice higher!

Wow, that’s a pretty good hire. Taking a pretty solid OVC coach. UTRGV was a very bottom basketball program.

Best of luck to Steadman, he's a good guy. I'm a little worried about Figger absolutely cleaning house, hope this doesn't turn out like when Dan Hipsher and his crew showed up.
