RE: [split] Women's Basketball Recruiting Thread 2021
A few insignificant updates

> I guess back in October we made the top 16 for 2022 guard T'yana Todd, along with the likes of UConn, Louisville, South Carolina, and Texas. Unsurprisingly in February she cut her list to 10 and Rice didn't make it. Dayton is the only non-power conference school that did, so we'll root for them to beat out the big dogs. Nice to be in UConn's company, but still don't seem to have the sway on the recruiting trail necessary to beat out the blue bloods
> Rice has supposedly reported interest in 2022 C Christeen Iwuala. From Texas, but already with offers from Louisville, Texas, Northwestern, UCLA, and Mississippi State (Baylor and Stanford are also on the reported interest list). Again, love the effort. Tough to see how we win this one either
> Looking at the 2021 ESPN rankings, it just seems like very few ranked recruits are choosing to play at mid-majors (not exactly surprising or dissimilar from the men's side). The list of schools with at least one recruit: Temple (#65), Jackson State (#70), Green Bay (#73), BYU (#74), UCF (#84), Middle Tennessee (#89), Duquesne (#90), Davidson (#96), UMass (#97). For 2022, most recruits are still unsigned and the only mid-major with a commitment is Princeton (#46). No real point to any of this, just food for thought.
> Rice has two open scholarships (I think) for next year (assuming Wiggins is back). A quick list of transfers that Rice might/could/should target (this is obviously not exhaustive and excluding transfers who on paper we don't have a realistic shot at):

Tessa Brugler Bucknell 6-1 Grad 13.2 ppg, 10.0 rpg
Autumn Ceppi Bucknell 6-1 Grad 8.4 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 3.8 apg
Abby Kapp Bucknell 6-0 Grad 11.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 1.5 apg

Couple other names:

Eva Hodgson, Bill & Mary, Junior, 20.7 ppg, 3.6 apg*
Amirah Abdur-Rahim, Notre Dame, 6-3 Sophomore, 1.0 ppg, 1.1 rpg

* Probably a top target but also...gotta imagine a power conference caliber player

I'm sure they're not Rice targets but the Hayes sisters at MTSU are in the transfer portal. Anastasia was 2nd in the country in scoring. Assuming they're gone, you'd have to think Rice will be the preseason favorites in the CUSA again next year (although I think Charlotte has some good young talent?).

I actually think there is a *third* Hayes sister, a freshman at Notre Dame who is also transferring. I'm assuming she's their sister because her name is Alasia Hayes and she's from Murfreesboro. Maybe they all want to play together.

You know what, now that I've checked, there's a fourth Hayes sister, Acacia Hayes. She has a top 8 that does not include Middle Tennessee but does have a bunch of high major programs.

Pretty crazy that there are four of them and they're all really good basketball players. Typically when you have that many kids that are athletes, at least one of them is a scrub. But two combining for 40 PPG at MTSU, one at Notre Dame, and one soon-to-be at a power conference is pretty ridiculous.

Yep. But I'd bet that the Ogwumike sisters could take them, 4-on-4. :-)

Too bad they might be leaving Conf USA. I wonder if someone got to them at the NCAA tournament.
The conf needs them.

Sasha Goforth from Oregon State has entered the transfer portal. She wants to transfer closer to home (she's from Fayetteville, Arkansas so you'd have to figure Arkansas would be one of the front-runners). But she'd be a huge pick-up for Rice.

Her dad is from Texas. I wonder if she is distantly related to Bart Goforth?

I LOVE that we're going after these women. Raise the bar.

I don't even mind one bit if some of them come here so they can play and later decide to transfer... as long as it works for us as well and we 'know' it. The idea that kids go to a place and stay 4 years is even less than it was a few years ago. I'd LOVE to tell kids, come here and play for a winner... if you decide to leave, you will be able to transfer Rice credits ANYWHERE in the world.... and if you decide you love it here, you will have an un-matched education. If you go somewhere else and aren't getting the playing time, you may or may not be able to transfer to Rice without losing credit hours. Everything to gain by starting at Rice... and lots to gain by coming to or staying at Rice.

I try to take the attitude that these years, starting with HS recruiting, and decisions are some of the most important in the lives of these kids. If they want to come here or not, stay here or not, I respect their right to make the decisions for themselves, based on what they deem important.

When she was being recruited out of high school, her top 3 schools were Oregon State, Arkansas and Texas A&M. (https://www.nwaonline.com/news/2019/apr/...a-goforth/)

Her father, Calvin, (formally, Robert Calvin Goforth) is a UT-Austin grad (1984, BS .. and Stanford PhD, 1990) who was on the U. Arkansas Mechanical Engineering faculty from 1990-95 (along with 1978 Rice grad Carl V. Wikstrom, who was there 1989-1994).

I've traced both Gorforth families back a few generations ... with no apparent connection.

Goforth announced yesterday she's going to Arkansas.

Lots more transfers popping up every day. More guards than posts, but you'd have to think 1 or 2 of the elite ones would be interested in us.

LOL. The way the NCAA is extending college scholarships, I do get the sense that some of the college athletes playing in 2020-21 will still have college eligibility in 2121.
