ND unveils "Fighting Irish TV"
"The University of Notre Dame Athletics Department and its integrated content and communications team, Fighting Irish Media, have announced a new video platform, Fighting Irish TV, to deliver fans Notre Dame content directly to their television set.

“We’re excited to launch Fighting Irish TV and provide Notre Dame fans an even better way to watch their favorite Fighting Irish content on the big screen in their living room,” said Sr. Associate Athletics Director (Media/Brand) Rob Kelly. “As in all things we do, we look at how to better serve our fans and this opportunity to be a leader in the television application space with our archived content was no different. I’m especially excited by the extension of our existing digital ecosystem that this platform makes possible in a world increasingly dominated by on-demand viewing.”

Fighting Irish TV is an “over the top” (OTT) video application (i.e. Peacock, Netflix, etc.) that allows you to watch on a larger screen. Additionally, there will be exclusive content delivered right to the app – including, but not limited to, The Vault (a collection of full Fighting Irish home football games since 1991), the 2021 Notre Dame Football Pro Day, live press conferences, game highlights, feature video stories and much more.

Fighting Irish TV is currently available via the Google Play store, Amazon and AppleTV."

(It is currently free of charge)

(There is already speculation that Notre Dame may "cut out the middle man" in the future and provide home football games directly to fans via this "Netflix for Fighting Irish fans" streaming service)

"But it’s not hard to squint and see a future where Notre Dame home games are available exclusively on Fighting Irish TV.

Considering the NFL just committed the vast majority of its inventory to the Big Four TV networks through 2033, any predictions that all sports will move exclusively online two, five, even 10 years in the future are clearly premature. So I’m not going to sit here and say Notre Dame will abandon its TV contract for FITV within the foreseeable future.

But what this does show is that schools are learning from media companies. NBC saw how popular The Office became on Netflix and decided to rake in its own subscriber fees, and thus Peacock was born. ESPN is fully aware that no one under 35 has a traditional cable or satellite subscription, which is why ESPN+ exists.

If and when the shift to an all-digital future happens, Notre Dame is preparing today to cut out the middle man and go into business for itself."

RE: ND unveils "Fighting Irish TV"
So bye bye...NBC contract.

Hope your administrators have thought this out. ND home games will be so exclusive no one will see them if you basically create a PPV platform.

I like the way BYU does BYUTV and makes their sports available. A great balance of revenue and availability. Of course, its on a massive scale compared to what this app hopes to be, which is essentially a cash cow and nothing more.

I doubt ND has the resources to make a real channel like BYU has, but it would bring in huge rewards if they found a way to make the investment.

I downloaded it to my TV's using my Amazon Fire Sticks with no problems.

If you want to watch any full, original ND home game since the NBC contract was signed in 1991, it has a very easy format and lists them all by season.

ND may carry the inconsequential northeastern and much of the midwestern portions of the US, but BYU has Utah and parts of Hawaii and Guam!

Please tell me the Dropkick Murphys' version of The Lonesome Boatman is used in some manner with Fighting Irish TV.

Yes, serious.

ND has a $14 billion endowment and makes enough money from football to endow a tv network.

Oh, sure, they could buy the transmitting equipment, towers, studio, and server space I suppose. But there's a lot more to a tv network than the equipment. There's programming, audience, getting on over the air broadcast channels in multiple nations, multiple languages, sustaining it all, getting onto 600 cable systems, Dish, Fios etc. Not to mention actually making it successful.

But mostly the resources are less tangible, like the will to do it, the mission behind it. Who would watch it? Unless they would just pay people to sit and watch it, which they can t afford to do, I don't see how they could get viewers.

Notre Dame could not replicate BYUTV easily. Not with the resources they have. Mayne if the Vatican paid for it, otherwise they will have to stick to apps etc.

Are you saying BYU is a bigger brand name then ND? How many Mormons are there? 12 million total? What are BYU's ratings on tv? This is a bad argument just tap out.

FYI- there is at minimum 1.2 billion Catholics worldwide. This is DavidSt type argument.

ND can create a station, but it won't be a network like BYUTV. Check, there are thousands of religious channels, but very, very few are catholic. Because, guaging the market, few of these Catholics want to watch Catholic broadcasting. I can't even name one nationwide Catholic network. A ND tv network could not get viewers. Without viewers, you have a pile of broadcasting equipment, not a network. No one wants to a watch a 24 hour mixed programming Catholic TV channel, especially one focused only on one university. If you think otherwise, you are not very savvy.

Not saying BYU is a bigger brand than ND. But its a brand their viewers want. And if ND had a tv brand viewers wanted, it would already exist. Stick to some sports on an app man. No university has a a real commercial tv network like BYUTV. Not even close. And if no others are doing it, I doubt ND is willing to put enough money into one to make work.

How many of the 1.2 billion have cable
How many towers in how many countries would it take to reach 1.2 billion people?
How many of the 1.2 billion are in the 3rd world and don't even know what streaming is, let alone be able to it?
A huge number means nothing if they dont /can't watch your channel man.
And most BYUTV viewers are not even LDS btw.

I truly hate to be the one to inform you that money isn't the only resource in the world. ND has more than most. I get that. But that doesn't mean they can do TV. They can have a nice sports app that airs old games and a couple live games a season or something, and some of the women's sports, but currently, a full network like BYUTV is simply beyond their scope. Sorry.

If we wanted to we could make an EWTN type network and get more viewers then BYU. Ludicrous argument

Eyeballs are a great resource and we get a bunch more then BYU. The question is want to, not if we can.

Money ain't all the story, but it is the pen that writes it.

FYI a ton of ND viewers are atheist or protestant. Still dwarfs anything BYU can produce.

No, we're committed to the ACC til 2036. Not many of our football games will appear on that network.

A kid in my grade school class said b the same thing all the time. I could do that too if I wanted, but I just don't want to.

If they can get the app working on more devices, it will probably be good. But it still won't be a TV network. There's a LOT more BYU alums in the world than there are Notre Dame fyi. I know, you could be bigger if you wanted to, but you just don't want to lol.

Enjoy the app.
