Don't forget the ladies
Regular season champ CBU is playing New Mexico (go Lancers!) In the WNIT on Friday.

https://cbulancers.com/news/2021/3/15/wo...-play.aspx

Utah Valley women drew a 16 seed in the NCAA and play Stanford on Sunday.

Too bad CBU isn’t eligible for the NCAA. It would have been interesting to see what seed the committee might award a 24-0 WAC champion.

Probably a 15. NMSU had some gaudy numbers in recent years with Mark Trahk at the helm (USC) and got horrible seeds.

CBU still undefeated at 26-0. Beat UNM in the 1st round WNIT and beat San Francisco in the 2nd round.

Thanks for the update. I'm falling behind! Go Lancers.

CBU plays Rice, 20-4, on the 22nd to qualify for the WNIT Final 4.

Maybe the real prize in the expansion is the SFA women’s team. I say that even as a more-than-decent Georgia Tech team is making a run... just to get to 9 down against SFA.

SFA had the lead for most of the game but in the second half the height of GT has taken over. Game is currently in overtime. and GT has the lead.

That's what happens when you send a league's 3rd best team.

Final was 87-44, Stanford over Utah Valley women.

That part of the WAC women's tourney didn't much mention on here. Here's an article from Desert.

I hope they aren't the real prize. 24-2 SFA lost to 15-8 Georgia Tech in the first round.

Looking at their schedule, when they are winning that many conference games by over 40, 50, 60+ points and they were still a 12 seed, I think its more a sign of how truly horrible the Southland is at women's basketball.

88-29, 100-41, 87-28, 105-36, 114-58. Scores like that in conference are embarrassing.

Beating Auburn by 13 might look good, but Auburn didn't win a single SEC game this year, finished on a 17 game losing streak and has fired their coach already.

Yet the WAC rep was a 15 seed. NMSU has some gaudy win totals and dominance under Mark Trahk and yet still regularly got 15 seeds. I think SFA WBB will be a nice addition. A 12 seed is much better than what the WAC typically gets.

The talent in women's basketball seems much more concentrated among a smaller number of great programs. There isn't much middle ground.

Yes. It's nothing like MBB. No middle class at all.

California Baptist women's basketball lost to Rice 79-55 to end their season 26-1. Rice advanced to the WNIT Final Four.

So Trahk came from NMSU?

Dude’s been a character at USC. In normal years, he’s got this dapper LA persona down tight while his teams try to claw your face off. That’s been a sometimes major and sometimes minor part of the gauntlet that is the Pac-12. Kind of trippy to see him relegated to a polo and not much of a haircut this year, but we all have sacrifices to make.

Mind you... I can talk about when I was growing up among Pac-8/10 men’s coaching legends (whether for quality or either main definition of character) in the 1970s and 1980s. Wooden, Stan Morrison, Marv Harshman, Ralph Miller, Dick Harter, George Raveling, eventually Lute Olson. I really think that the current membership of the women’s coaching club in the conference is the equal of that. Tara VanDerveer is the obvious leader, Charli Turner-Thorne is the long-time foil at Arizona State, Kelly Graves is part savant and part-inspired (and maybe a little creepy) hoop junkie at Oregon, Scott Rueck is an ankle-biter in the best sense at Oregon State, Cori Close gets a lot of talent (and does things with it) at UCLA, Kamie Ethridge is an interesting up-and-comer at Washington State, I should probably start mentioning J.R. Payne at Colorado, and you may have seen what Adia Barnes just pulled off with Arizona. This gets more interesting because most rosters may be half represented in the western region.

Sorry for the tangent, but worth mentioning.

Trahk came to NMSU via USC. He had arguably the best stretch in NMSU WBB history (the women do not have the same history of success as the men). Then he was re-hired by USC. I was sorry to see him go.
