The guys staying and coming gives me some optimism. Heck, You’re getting a good shooter back and that is huge in Estime. Why do you think we struggled so much at the end? Nobody was a true 3 ball threat and, of course, no size. Getting Sims back with a healthy Shy with Mike and Jamahri in year 2 is a good guard/wing nucleus on its own.

Let’s see after Spring recruitment ends.

I don't think anyone is forecasting Doom and gloom. Just merely stating that the evidence doesn't support blind optimism at this point.

Blind optimism is not how I operate, but I m pretty sure you aren’t referring to me because I actually have a basketball take in my posts. If you can defend, you have a chance in this system. Many of the holdovers have the ability or physical ability to do and not get blown by or dominated physically.

No offense Bill but other than the full court press these guys were not good defensively even against CAA teams. It was not a priority with Keatts and I have not seen it with Siddle. At some point you have to get stops on the half court to beat teams that are decent . The need for a rim protector/rebounder is a must even in todays crazy three ball era.

Well, you are putting an awful lot of stock in unknowns, with a coach that's batting 25% with recruits. We can say, he can only get better, one would hope.

Mullet and I are in agreement here. Though, I feel like everyone is viewing Boggs' talent through whichever lense we see Siddle in. If you're all in on Siddle and think he's going to resurrect the program... you don't see Boggs as a top talent. If you either don't think Siddle is going to get it done or are in "wait and see" mode, than those folks seem to take the opinion Boggs was a top talent here.

That seems to boil down where we are on Boggs' time as a Seahawk.

I'm all in on Siddle AND I think Boggs was the biggest loss. Where does that leave me, lol. 04-cheers

Numbers not there to press, size not optimal for press and no backend eraser. Give him more than 1 year.

Predicting Mike and Shy to be All-CAA isn't blind optimism. It's based off two guys I've seen have success in the CAA. If I'm wrong I'll live with it but I've watched enough of them to know it's not some outrageous claim.

If you want to call blind optimism on the recruits, that's fine. I have my worries about the possibility of McGriff having to start at the 5 right away. He's only been playing basketball a few years so it would be a lot to expect him to handle that right away. I hope it's something we can address via the portal. They've made contact with a few bigs already. But if simply stating that is blind optimism then I will digress.

Stating that everything is going to be alright, when being alright is going to be based on recruiting, and recruiting is something coach is batting 25% on, THAT is blind optimism. Now, I hope they ALL work out, but, I'll believe it when i see it at this point.

I'd like to get some news soon, so we have other stuff to talk about.

Never stated that "everything is going to be alright." And when it comes to recruiting I said that was fair criticism, which you cut out for some reason when making your reply...

Hoops, 25% hit rate is one thing, but Steere and Carr didn't make it to December. Some are talking about competing for the league title next year and we have one post player on our roster and he's an incoming freshman. I'm optimistic by nature, being a Cubs fan will do that to you, but Siddle stumbled out of the blocks. That doesn't mean he's not the guy, but I can't find a reason to think we'll be better next year than we were this year and I think we were worse this year than we were under Burke.

Gary, I really appreciate it when you provide insight. I agree that both Mike and Shy have flashed elite level ability, so it isn't outrageous on the surface. With Shy, I worry about his health and ability to return to the player we saw last year and I have separate concerns with Mike that aren't worth fleshing out. What I think is unrealistic is to count on an all-league performance from them both.

I'm not predicting doom and gloom, but I also can't get behind the idea that it isn't that bad as it currently stands. We need significant help through the portal.

Nobody is debating that we need significant help through the portal. I think that Gary is pointing out that certain positions seem okay at this point. They need to sure up 4-5 and perhaps a best available.

All good points... and I agree with the portal. I know the optics are bad now and Siddle can be criticized fairly until he actually produces at this point. I've always enjoyed keeping up with recruiting which is why I'm so quick to go there. Though I do wish we didn't have as many holes that need filling, I am looking forward to seeing who they bring in. That's not really optimism, that's just me.

I agree. Having Joe produce enough i think offsets those two a bit. But yeah, first class at this point with what's happened is a complete train wreck. Many here saw the writing on the wall with Steere right away, and sadly that played out about as well as many predicted. Looking back at all the optimism for Joe, me included, and now he's gone.
He will get his chance to make up for his recruiting blunders as he doesn't have a choice.

I think he's not specifically referring to those claims, but that UNCW basketball as a whole is in a good spot right now following significant departures. I think it was more a shot at the optimism that Bill was writing about.

THIS post is exactly where I land currently too. I'm reeeeeeaally hoping there's a massive improvement from this year to next, but the current state of the roster makes it very difficult to envision. I'll leave that level of optimism to the others here who seem much better at that.

LOTS of transfers in the portal, especially big men. No excuse not to land one or two serviceable bigs this off-season. Look throughout the country, not just North Carolina. There is a lot of competition with quality programs here. SELL THE BEACH and IMMEDIATE playing time. Guys want to play.

Lots of good possibilities with transfers, but I have to admit that my optimism has taken a hit after losing Jake, Joe and Ty. I think our rebuild has been set back considerably. Still have strong hope that is the guy to bring us back.

It's a new day. Gary, curious if you've heard any names we may be pursuing. Or, if there are any guys in particular where there may be mutual interest and a great fit.

Goodman tweeted earlier:

There have been more than 125 players who have gone into the transfer portal over the last two days.

All of them been told they can play immediately.

NCAA needs to rule on one-time transfer rule NOW. You can work on all specifics later, but make a decision. Not fair to kids.
