Well don't forget, the Thursday game against Cincinnati was treated like a midweek game by both coaches. Shafer got the start in that one.

However, he did pitch a strong inning in relief yesterday (Chenault also did well), and with a strong opponent like ECU, the coaching staff may feel more comfortable using a more veteran arm to start and leaving a guy like Shafer as a bullpen option.

We'll see. Shafer is probably the favorite but if it were up to me, I'd go with Gorham or Hodges.
Sure, but i think 33's point was, we really don't have a "normal" yet when it comes to mid week. That's still TBD. (if it wasn't his point, it was definitely mine)

Agreed. 1 game does not make a "trend", so we can't say yet who our established midweek option(s) are.

That was my point. I don't think we have ever been this loaded with pitching. but that's a good problem to have.

Yep. Pitching depth is going to separate us from the rest of the mid-major pack, and might just put us in elite company by the end of the season.

The best part of the depth is the number of young guys. Should keep us in good shape for several years.

Baseball people tell me that if you want to advance further in the playoffs than UNCW has in the past , you need "arms, arms, arms". So to my simple mind, this team has the potential to go places we haven't been before.

It’s quality arms, arms and arms that throw strike 1 then strike 2. We aren’t quite there yet but not too far off.

RE: Baseball: Series vs. Appalachian State
We almost have too much depth. Quality minutes matter in order for that depth to actually turn into consistent good pitching. With so few games, it's really hard to know who can come through off the bench, and who can start and give you at least five quality innings before turning it over to your relievers. Your unknown young guys don't have any room for error, and you have to pull them quickly if they get in a jam since you don't have any experience with how they will respond in bad situation's.

Coach may be more interested in seeing how some of these young arms respond in a highly charged game like ECU, then sticking with what he knows tonight. May toss some that have shown early signs of greatness to the wolves just to see how they respond.
