Why do so many very good players go to the hinterlands of Michigan but we can’t recruit as well? What ever happened to Amy Sherry, Dawn Zerman, Ann Forbes, Lindsey Shearer etc. Used to pull decent players from Europe too. Heck we out recruited Sherry from Connecticut’s Rebecca Lobo team. I know the landscape of women’s basketball is different but it’s not nearly as crazy as the men’s game. Most players stay four years, you can actually get top teams to come to Kent, etc.

While I was typing BG cut the lead to 4. Very good high paced game. Now it’s 1 with 2 minutes to go in the 3rd. These teams actually shoot well!!

All great players ... but I think the most impactful player ever at Kent was Chase ... Andrea Caesar. She transferred before her senior year, I believe to get married to a ski athlete in Montana somewhere. She actually played again later, professionally.

Only for one year though. Those 9 blocks in a MAC tournament game were impressive. She looked like she had suction cups on her hands. I forgot Julie Studer who passed on Michigan St. and played 4 years. She could even score against the big girls. Twenty some points against a 4 seed Iowa St in Ames in the NCAA. Her and Zerman were quite the team.

Caesar left to turn pro in Europe and was still playing for a professional team in Switzerland a few years ago. Her and Zerman's four years were probably the best ever at Kent State.

But....Neither Studer nor Caesar ever averaged a double-double, as Nila Blackford did this season. Neither led the MAC in blocked shots three years in a row, as Lindsey Thall has (and she'll be back next year).

Starkey has had good teams. Two MAC East championships in five years.

I don't know what to conclude from this season except that COVID-19 made everything crazy.

I agree on Blackford and Thall. Although we don’t play as many Power 5 teams as we used to so it’s hard to compare them to Studer and Shearer (I was luke warm on Cszarar, some great games but always seemed a bit disinterested). Our guards are the issue. Average at best. Last year Carter and Dingle were much better. Two MAC East titles aren’t four NCAA appearances. I thought we might have gotten one last year but we will never know. I am also a little disappointed in how Young and Shumate have developed (I know about Shumates knee). After seeing Lurken blossom under Starkey I was expecting more. It also bothers me that both Dingle and Shumate have missed games every year they played for what appeared to be disciplinary reasons. Might be nothing but it doesn’t feel right. I tend to compare Starkey to our previous coach. I’m over that now. I agree COVID made a mess of this season but you can’t use that to totally ignore what happened.

RE: 2021 MAC Tournament
Even not being healthy all season, Shumate still averaged about the same number of points as she did last season and was all-MAC honorable mention again. Her rebounding was down, but she still was our top defending guard. Last year, if I remember right, you thought she was the best of the freshmen. Kelly improved a lot this season, and I'm happy to have her. Modkins is a steadying influence but will never be a star. I think Santoro could be very good eventually.

They have three freshman guards coming in. Lexi Linton, the one from New Jersey, had a triple double (points, steals, assists) in one game at the end of the season, then scored 38 with eight steals in the next game. Her video reminded me of Golden, though even in high school, Golden never put up numbers like that. The forward from Indiana missed the last eight games or so because of an injury. Didn't sound good. The guard from Wisconsin never played at all because of COVID and because she was still rehabbing a knee. The Ohio guard was first-team all-district, I think, on a good team.

Because of COVID and COVID fatigue, I don't think ever saw what this team really was this season.

Then again, Central Michigan won the tournament with eight players.

I did think Shumate was good as a freshman. For some reason my post did not update. What I said was I was disappointed in her and Young’s development this year. I was expecting more after seeing what Starkey did with Lurken. We were 2-5 against the top four teams and 8-1 against the rest. There must be a reason. I have a problem blaming it on the bigs. A lack of depth was their only issue. If the recruits are that good we will be fine. You know my feeling on recruits and transfers. When (if) they show up and start playing we will know. Until then they are just maybes. Two MAC East titles in 5 years is great but it’s not the 4 NCAA appearances in 7 years (going by memory but it’s close) that Sherry, Studer, Zerman etc. brought us. They were competitive with top teams consistently. Haven't seen that the last 15 years or so. By the way I was luke warm on Cszarar. Some great games but disinterested most of the time. I’d take Studer, Shearer, Blackmer, Korinek and even Henske over her. It was Cleveland who thought she was the best. One other thing that bothers me is both Dingle and Shumate have missed games both their seasons due to what appear to be disciplinary reasons. It makes me wonder what might be going on. I would rather see this team do well more than the men’s team. I have high standards and this years team did not meet them. I’m just a fan with some opinions. I have no inside info (not an alumni or a donor) I just watch the games and report what I think I see. Double doubles are nice but wins are better. I just think the guard play caused issues this year. It’s got nothing to do with what I think of them as people.
